Arsenal now most likely to sign "unbelievable" £39m forward after Sane blow

Arsenal are now believed to be among the frontrunners for the signing of a new forward target after missing out on Bayern Munich star Leroy Sané, who is committing his future to the Bundesliga side with a new contract.

Leroy Sané on verge of Bayern Munich stay after talks with Arsenal

Earlier this week, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg shared news of fresh Arsenal talks with Sane over a potential move to the Emirates Stadium, but the former Man City star appears more likely to snub Mikel Arteta.

The 29-year-old, who’s impressed with a string of standout performances for Bayern in recent weeks, was due to leave on a Bosman deal past June 30th. However, he is now edging towards signing fresh terms at the Allianz Arena.

Plettenberg reports that Bayern have made an official new contract offer to Sane, with all parties now working to reach an agreement over an extension, which spells bad news for Arsenal’s attempts to bring in a new right-winger this summer.

The journalist also states that Sane is about to extend his Bayern contract in a separate message, so it’s more likely than not Arsenal are about to miss out on a free deal for the Germany international star.

Interestingly, the Sky reporter has now claimed that the Gunners are eyeing an alternative in wantaway Bayern teammate Kingsley Coman.

Arsenal now "most concrete" option for Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman

According to Plettenberg, Arsenal is now the “most concrete” landing spot for Coman, who has told Bayern chiefs that he’d like to leave this summer.

However, it won’t be a free run for Arteta’s side either, with Tottenham also eyeing a move for the Frenchman and Saudi planning transfer talks.

Bayern Munich's KingsleyComancelebrates

“Kingsley Coman has already internally expressed his desire to leave this summer, as revealed,” wrote Plettenberg on X.

“Saudi clubs are now taking the matter seriously and are planning a visit to Munich for talks with Bayern. In England, Arsenal are currently the most concrete option – especially since Leroy Sané is about to extend his contract with Bayern. Spurs would like to sign Coman but are currently in a waiting position due to his high salary.”

While the 28-year-old earns a reported £284,000 per week in Germany, which would make him one of Arsenal’s highest-paid players, Coman’s price tag stands at up to £39 million – making him an obtainable option in terms of club-to-club negotiations.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

The former PSG and Juventus winger has racked up nearly 140 goals and assists combined over almost 330 appearances since joining Bayern, all whilst showcasing real ability on the highest stage.

“He was at PSG as an eight-year-old boy,” said pundit Rio Ferdinand.

“With the money that came in with the Qataris, he was one of the players who were offloaded, and he’s come back and done this. His trophy haul since leaving – it shouldn’t be allowed. It’s unbelievable. The kid knows how to win.”

One major drawback which Arsenal need to be aware of is Coman’s injury history, with Arteta keen to avoid being left so short of wide options akin to this season.

Graeme van Buuren, James Bracey pile on the runs to revive Gloucestershire

Unbeaten centuries in hefty fifth-wicket stand thwart Derbyshire’s bid for control

Gloucestershire’s James Bracey and Graeme van Buuren blasted their side out of trouble with swashbuckling centuries before rain took a hand on the third day of the Vitality County Championship Division Two match with Derbyshire at Bristol. The fifth-wicket pair launched a savage attack on the second new ball, producing a boundary blitz and adding 156 runs to their team’s overnight first innings total of 243 for four in just 21 overs before the heavens opened, with Bracey unbeaten on 137 and van Buuren having raced to 156 not out.No play was possible after lunch. At 399 for four, Gloucestershire were still 127 short of Derbyshire’s first innings total of 526, but on the most benign of batting surfaces, with two players in top form, they can feel optimistic of avoiding defeat on the final day.Bracey was on 87 and van Buuren 61 when play began, with 14 overs to bat before Derbyshire could take a second new ball both sides knew could be central to the outcome. Bracey moved comfortably to his second hundred of the season, reaching the milestone with his 15th four, a cut off Luis Reece, having faced 151 balls.Gloucestershire had just claimed a second batting bonus point when van Buuren elected to cut loose, moving from 88 to his 15th first class century with three fours off successive deliveries from off-spinner Alex Thomson in the over before the new ball became due.Derbyshire took it immediately, but suffered as a result when both Daryn Dupavillon and Sam Connors strayed in line and length, producing a plethora of short deliveries, while others were overpitched. The first five overs with the harder ball went for 65 runs.Bracey and van Buuren attacked at every opportunity, the latter pulling Connors over mid-wicket for six and clearing the ropes again off the same bowler with a sweetly-timed flick over fine leg. The diminutive Gloucestershire skipper needed only 28 deliveries to move from 100 to 150, sending the ball to all parts of the Seat Unique Stadium. From 318 for four when the new ball was taken, Gloucestershire had posted 383 for four by the end of the 85th over. Derbyshire captain David Lloyd had little option but to remove Dupavillon and Connors from the attack, bringing on Anuj Dal and Reece.Play had already been interrupted by a short shower when heavier rain arrived and lunch was taken. Bracey had faced 175 balls, striking 19 fours and a six, while the inspired van Buuren had clocked up 22 fours and 2 sixes in facing 172 deliveries. The partnership was worth 268 in 48.3 overs when the weather set in. Umpires Paul Pollard and Naeem Ashraf made a 3pm pitch inspection, ordered tea to be taken at 3.10pm, and looked again at 4pm, by which time more rain had fallen. They abandoned play for the day at 4.15pm.

The 25-year-old swapped Manchester City for Atletico last summer in a fee worth up to £82 million ($111m), and since then, he has proven to be an excellent acquisition. Arsenal and Barcelona have been credited with interest in the Argentine, and now manager Simeone has said it is "only logical" that big sides are sniffing around the striker.

    WHAT SIMEONE SAID

On the Alvarez transfer interest, Simeone told La Nacion: "It’s logical, I can’t imagine any other scenario. Julian is 25 years old, he’s an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with status. How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him. And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. Why? Because he’s ours. And since he’s ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy. How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110 per cent. And not just for him, of course, but for everyone."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alvarez justified his big-money move to Atletico after scoring 29 goals and adding five assists this season. Arsenal icon Thierry Henry believes the ex-City ace would be an ideal signing for Mikel Arteta's men, while Barca are looking for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski. But if he does go, it will not be on the cheap.

Argentina international Alvarez, who is said to have a €500m (£420m/$570m) release clause, is currently preparing for Atletico's Club World Cup campaign in the United States, which gets underway this weekend.

'We need to perform for the next generation's sake'

Bismah Maroof, the Pakistan women captain, talks about life since the team’s forgettable World Cup and the learnings from a historic win against New Zealand

Annesha Ghosh08-Nov-2017The only high points of Pakistan’s campaign at the Women’s World Cup were the scare they gave South Africa in their tournament opener, and then when their bowling attack spewed sparks to nearly pull off a second consecutive upset of India in a world tournament. But that was that. The threat didn’t translate into results, and a winless World Cup campaign led to an upheaval in the management, the sacking of the ODI captain, the appointment of a foreign coach, and a revamp of the managerial staff – all of this providing fodder for social-media trolls for over four months. But an ODI victory on Sunday against a team that had defeated them in each of their 12 previous meetings, across 20 years, changed everything, with current and former internationals taking to Twitter to commend the triumph. Even New Zealand, the opponents they defeated, applauded Pakistan during the innings break for the bowling effort that shot them out for 155.”As a team, we needed this appreciation in a big way,” Bismah Maroof, the newly appointed full-time captain, says. “Our World Cup results were quite heartbreaking. To see the people of Pakistan and the Australian team members, South Africans, commentators encouraging us the way they did [after the win against New Zealand], it validates the hard work you put in to achieve such results.”

The symbolism of the events leading up to the victory didn’t go unnoticed. Sana Mir, removed from the captaincy in the wake of a very public spat with the management, rolled New Zealand over with a four-for, before providing rearguard action with the bat and scoring the winning runs, with Maroof at the other end.”Sana is a fighter,” Maroof says. “I’ve always believed that with or without the captaincy, whenever the team needs her she’ll fight it out for the team. She has been under a lot of pressure since the World Cup and she converted that into a match-winning performance in a momentous win.”For Maroof herself, the months since the World Cup opener have been full of upheaval. Her tournament ended prematurely, with a fractured little finger in her right hand, and in the subsequent matches the batting unit fell apart – barring the occasional half-century from Nahida Khan and Ayesha Zafar.Cricket had to be put on hold when she returned and underwent rehab for close to 40 days. More than anything, accepting the reality of it all was most difficult.”The injury was untimely, and I had to stay away from cricket to clear the clutter in my head that the fracture brought,” she says. “But I took my time and moved on. I disengaged myself from cricket for a good number of days and spent my time with family. That helped my soul-searching a bit.”When I was offered captaincy, my family advised this could be right time for me to guide the team to more positive results. I took the role up as a challenge and I know it’s going to be quite an experience.”Maroof has been the mainstay of a volatile batting order since her debut as a 15-year old, and against New Zealand made 35-plus scores in each of the three ODIs. She says captaincy hasn’t put any extra pressure on her as a batsman, and that the ODI series has been a shot in the arm for the team.”Yes, we should have won the first game too. Our lower middle order is relatively inexperienced, so after they fell, the tailenders got somewhat excited at the prospect of victory,” she says, smiling. “But the biggest takeaway from the defeat was also what helped us win the third ODI and will do so in our upcoming games: take responsibility and close out the chase.”It’s a positive sign for Pakistan cricket. The better we perform, the better facilities we’ll get from the board. And that’s something we need to do for ourselves and for the next generation of women cricketers.”AFPMaroof attributes interim head coach Mark Coles with having begun the process of inculcating a new team culture.”He’s made it very clear that while we focus on our strengths, it important to accept our weaknesses and work on them. I think that way we’re starting to be at peace with both the person and player we are as individuals.”On commentary during the third ODI, Coles said he was “no longer father to only his two daughters back in New Zealand” but, with the coaching role, now had “the responsibility of 14 more”. Maroof reciprocates, calling him a “friend and fatherly figure” who, she says, has injected into the dressing room a degree of buoyancy that has multiplied trust among the players.”It took him a while to understand the Pakistani culture [Coles jokingly terms it “excitable”]. He’s been able to assess our mindset pretty quickly after that. Every girl knows they can walk up to him and speak their heart out. This uninhibited flow of communication is somewhat new to us.”You could probably see that when we were making those calls while taking singles and doubles. A ‘yes’ meant a ‘yes’ and a ‘no’ meant a ‘no’. It’s basic stuff, really, but yes, it’s starting to work for us.”Apart from Coles’ empathy, Maroof believes he has imparted a sense of direction.”Earlier, it was difficult to gather an understanding on the kind of approach we needed to adopt in key situations. With Mark coming in, he’s clearly outlined the roles best suited to each one of us. Even the plans we chalk out on paper are followed up with due deliberations on how we should be executing them. This awareness he’s instilled in us, [in my opinion, we had been missing out previously].”Now the full-time captain across formats, Maroof is alive to the challenges strewn across Pakistan’s path. “Our top-order looks fairly settled. Our concern now is the No. 5 and 6 positions, and also our fielding – something Mark, too, has identified as needing improvement.”The World Cup was testament to the growth the women’s game has made. We are not yet at par with the best teams, but our aim now is to bridge that gap as quickly as possible. At the same time, we realise it’s important to be patient. So we want to grow as a team and remodel ourselves as a better fielding, batting and bowling unit – one step at a time.”

Man Utd ignored call to buy Michael Olise & Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace in £100m double deal with Red Devils urged to reconsider move for FA Cup hero

Eze had a dream run with Crystal Palace in the 2024-25 campaign. The English attacking midfielder appeared in 42 matches across all competitions where he scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists. He also scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City that sealed the club's first-ever major trophy.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former United forward Yorke reminded the club management that he had urged them to sign Michael Olise and Eze from Palace last summer for a combined £100 million. The Red Devils, at that time, did not pay heed to Yorke's suggestion as Olise moved to Bayern Munich and Eze went on to experience a brilliant season at Selhurst Park.

  • WHAT DWIGHY YORKE SAID

Speaking to , Yorke said: "Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace would be perfect for Manchester United. Yeah, he scored at the weekend in the FA Cup final, but it’s not just about that. A year ago, maybe more, I said this kid and Michael Olise – who went to Bayern – United should buy them for £100 million. Put £100m down and you will get two fantastic players. Instead, they listened to the figures in the hierarchy, which is understandable, but it’s glaring just how good these two are. Eze has the decision-making, the talent, he’s a good athlete, he can create and score. He’s at the right age to step up and play on a bigger platform. It’s a no-brainer."

Now worth less than Mudryk: Maresca must upgrade on "complete" Chelsea man

One position that is key in Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea system, is the wingers, pinning fullbacks high and wide, looking to provide the team with output and being isolated in 1v1 scenarios as often as possible.

However, the Italian has lost his most productive wide option to injury, Noni Madueke, who has netted eight times this season, also providing four assists and totalling 1,653 minutes played.

This leaves Maresca with just Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho as his senior wide options, as the Blues also lost another winger due to suspension back in December last year.

Mykhailo Mudryk's time at Chelsea

Chelsea announced in December 2024, that Ukrainian winger, Mykhailo Mudryk had been provisionally suspended by the FA after testing positive for a banned substance.

This came after making 15 appearances for the Blues this season, scoring three goals, providing five assists and totalling 849 minutes played.

Whilst a large majority of Mudryk’s minutes came in the UEFA Conference League (523 minutes), losing the 24-year-old has still affected Maresca’s squad, as they are now left with just two natural senior wingers after Madueke’s injury.

The Blues signed Mudryk in January 2023, with an initial fee of around £62m with up to a further £27m in bonuses. The Ukrainian is now valued at €38.5m (£31.8m) according to Football Transfers, but that is still more than a certain other Chelsea man…

The Chelsea star who's now worth less than Mudryk

Reece James was once valued as high as £57.4m according to FootballTtransfers, but over the past few seasons, his value has taken a real hit, following plenty of injury troubles which have kept him off the pitch for prolonged spells.

Stats taken from Football Transfers

The Chelsea captain has managed to make ten appearances for the club this season, scoring one goal, providing one assist, contributing to one clean sheet and totalling 556 minutes played.

The 25-year-old has suffered from reoccurring hamstring problems since 2020, missing a total of 131 games since 2019/20, when James was first introduced to the first-team under Frank Lampard.

When James is fully fit, there is no doubt about his quality, with Kyle Walker even labelling him the “complete” player and revealing why he believes James is the best right-back in the world.

However, having only made 168 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals, providing 23 assists and totalling 11,503 minutes, his availability will always remain a concern.

Reece James in action for Chelsea

James is now valued at €37.4m (£30.9m) according to Football Transfers, which means he isn’t seen as one of Chelsea’s top ten most valuable players, despite being the highest-paid player at the club, as well as being the club captain.

With Chelsea’s new wage structure aiming to pay players based on their value to the side, James could come under consideration if his injury troubles continue, as to whether the Blues need to focus their resources elsewhere.

Market Movers

That likely wouldn’t go down well with Chelsea fans, as James is one of the only academy graduates remaining to have successfully come through the system and become a fully fledged first-teamer – yet if his injury woes remain, an upgrade may be needed.
