Tottenham could also hijack club’s £32m deal for player amid Solanke claim

Tottenham could hijack a club's £32 million forward signing late in the January window, amid claims they also want Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Spurs linked with late forward signing

In the last two weeks, Spurs have been sporadically linked with signing another forward after completing a deal to bring in Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig.

Indeed, media reports have refused to rule out the possibility of Tottenham bringing in yet another attacking option for manager Ange Postecoglou. Journalist Graeme Bailey, for example, suggested recently that Spurs could still be interested in signing Jota from Al-Ittihad, amid claims West Ham are pushing for the Portuguese.

Meanwhile, some surprise news emerged this week that Tottenham are weighing up a late move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The Englishman is apparently now a target for chairman Daniel Levy and the Lilywhites recruitment team, coming amid his incredible campaign at the Vitality Stadium. Solanke has netted 12 goals in 20 Premier League appearances so far this season, enticing Tottenham's interest as they consider heirs to club-record goalscorer Harry Kane.

There is also the small matter of the Club Brugge sensation Antonio Nusa and his ongoing transfer saga, with Brentford previously ousting Spurs talks to sign the 18-year-old and agreeing a deal.

Club Brugge'sAntonioNusacelebrates scoring their fourth goal with Casper Nielsen

The north Londoners had been in negotations to bring in Nusa on a buy-to-loan-back deal, similar to how they first signed the likes of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr, who have since gone on to become first team stars.

In some better news for Spurs, though, Nusa is widely rumoured to have failed his medical with the Bees – which has now re-opened the door for Levy and co to ressurrect a move.

Now, a report from Het Laatste Nieuws (via Sport Witness) has shared a further glimmer of hope for Postecoglou.

Tottenham could hijack Brentford's £32m Nusa deal

Indeed, the news outlet claims Tottenham could make late hijack attempt for Nusa and "really want him" still.

Brentford and Brugge have agreed on the sum of £32 million, plus 12.5 per cent of any future profit and a loan back till the end of 2023/2024 – so Spurs will also need to green-light those terms.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

Tottenham are apparently "lurking" in the background for Nusa, though one major thing not in their favour is the 18-year-old's desire to join Brentford.

Called "fantastic" by Arsenal star Martin Odegaard, the tricky winger has a growing reputation, and it will be interesting to see just how much Spurs do in fact wish to sign him.

Chelsea could supercharge Palmer with £103m goal-scoring "machine"

Despite some initial positivity stemming from an impressive pre-season campaign and the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea fans have had to endure another miserable season of false dawns and poor performances.

The Blues are on a three-game winning streak across all competitions but find themselves tenth in the Premier League and closer to the relegation zone than top spot.

One of the most significant problems at Stamford Bridge is the side's inability to finish chances, so fans should be excited about the latest player touted for a move to west London: Napoli's Victor Osimhen.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024 Chelsea transfer news – Victor Osimhen

According to reports in Italy, via Football Transfers, Chelsea have made the Nigerian superstar their number-one transfer target for 2024, and they are entirely unfazed by the new contract he signed at the end of 2023.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Blues view the €120m (£103m) release clause in Osimhen's latest contract as an invitation from the Serie A champions to launch a bid with Todd Boehly and Co readying a 'big summer assault'.

While it would be another outlandishly expensive transfer for the west Londoners, it might just be worth it to sign a goal-scoring "machine" and "Naploli's heart and soul", as dubbed by journalist Mina Rzouki.

Additionally, the prospect of seeing Osimhen and Cole Palmer in the same team should be all the convincing that Chelsea needs to once again dip into their seemingly endless piles of cash.

How Victor Osimhen and Cole Palmer could play together

In a season that has been generally quite miserable for the Chelsea faithful, there has been at least one undeniably positive development: the signing of former Manchester City youngster Palmer.

The 21-year-old has already scored eight goals and provided four assists in 12 Premier League starts, and if his teammates were more clinical, he'd have a lot more of the latter by now.

The Blues' primary striker this season has been Nicolas Jackson, and while the Senegalese international has looked good at times, and has racked up seven league goals already, he would have scored many more if his finishing was up to par.

Victor Osimhen

The same problem exists with the Blues' backup striker, Armado Broja, as the Albanian has looked good at points, but hasn't delivered in front of goal, netting twice all term.

The poor finishing of the Chelsea pair is painfully apparent during games and even harder to ignore when comparing their underlying numbers to Osimhen's.

For example, Jackson generates a higher non-penalty expected goals figure than Osimhen – almost double, in fact – and yet when it comes to the number of non-penalty goals they score per 90, the 6 foot 1 Napoli star comes out ahead.

Now imagine it was the "natural talent" of Osimhen, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, getting on the end of Palmer's crosses, and not Jackson – the former City prospect could end the season with close to 20 assists.

Ultimately, it would be a massive investment from Chelsea to sign the Nigerian forward, but the partnership he could build with Palmer is surely reason enough for them to go for it.

Mumbai knocked out, Chhattisgarh progress after washout

Chhattisgarh had one more win than Mumbai in the league stage, which ensured their progress

Saurabh Somani in Alur21-Oct-2019No result

The inequities of a rain-affected knockout match were brought to the fore as Chhattisgarh’s quarter-final against Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 was washed out on Monday.Chhattisgarh had finished the league stage with five wins to Mumbai’s four, and with number of wins in the league stage being the first deciding criterion in the event of a washout, they found themselves in a first-ever semi-final. Their defeat of Mumbai in the league stage, when they chased down 318, proved to be pivotal.Excellent bowling by Mumbai, who ensured captain Shreyas Iyer’s decision to bowl first was vindicated, meant Chhattisgarh had plodded to 190 for 6 with just 4.2 overs remaining. A sharp downpour meant lunch was taken early and Mumbai’s innings was shortened to 40 overs, with the target set at 192 via the VJD method.Teenage wunderkind Yashasvi Jaiswal then showed how good the surface at the Alur II stadium was – coupled with how outrageously gifted he himself is – as Mumbai clattered 95 without loss in 11.3 overs before the skies opened up once again. Unlike the previous downpour, this one was of much greater intensity, and though it lasted barely over half hour, the ground was soggy, wet and in no condition to complete the 8.3 overs that remained to count as a result. The first stoppage in play had lasted 88 minutes, but hadn’t affected the game’s direction. When Mumbai came out to bat, they were expected to do so on a pitch made a bit spicy by moisture – the umpires waited a good ten minutes before calling for the covers even as a drizzle intensified during Chhattisgarh’s innings – but someone forgot to tell Jaiswal that. The 17-year-old who came into this game having hit three centuries in his last four innings, with his most recent knock being a monumental 203, looked on course to make yet another three-figure score. He showed respect for neither age, nor bowler, carting Chhattisgarh’s bowlers for five fours and as many sixes. Three of those sixes resulted in stoppages of play because the ball had gone over the boundary of the stadium. Ironically, Jaiswal’s big-hitting actually meant a few valuable minutes lost while new balls were sought, though of course it was not a serious enough delay to make Mumbai wonder if their opener should have just held back a wee bit and sent the ball merely over the rope.Jaiswals’s opening partner Aditya Tare was progressing niftily at a run-a-ball, but his 31* looked positively snail-like against Jaiswal’s 38-ball 60.Defending champions Mumbai looked primed to saunter into the semi-finals and set up a rematch with Karnataka, but it was not to be.Earlier, Dhawal Kulkarni had led the way with the ball, returning a first spell of 6-4-3-1, with Shardul Thakur not too far behind with his 6-2-13-1. Chhattisgarh’s early loss of wickets and nip off the deck meant they went into extreme caution mode, and the scoreboard read 16 for 2 in 12 overs. That run-rate of 1.33 was still an improvement from being 10 for 2 in 11 overs.Captain Harpreet Singh was still there though, and he showed the value of biding time on the surface. He found a good ally in Amandeep Khare, as the duo added 135 runs in 143 balls for the fourth wicket, lifting Chhattisgarh from a sorry 40 for 3 in the 19th over.Harpreet had been on 9 off 46 balls at one stage, but accelerated gradually, before exploding in the 39th over, bowled by left-arm spinner Shams Mulani. The second, fourth and sixth balls all disappeared over the ropes, in the arc between long-on and deep midwicket, as he moved from 57 to 75 in five balls.Just when Chhattisgarh seemed to have found their finishing gear though, he fell for 83 off 108 balls. Another mini-collapse followed, as Chhattisgarh went from 175 for 3 to 181 for 6, even as Khare held fort on a patient half-century. Taking that clutch of wickets just before rain meant Mumbai had to chase relatively fewer than they could have otherwise, though 192 in 40 overs still felt generous to Chhattisgarh. Eventually, the rain gods proved most generous.

VIRADA ‘A LA CHAPE’

VAR considered at Sunderland v Wycombe

Sunderland journalist James Copley has now revealed some big news ahead of their League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers next week.

The Lowdown: One game away

After knocking out Sheffield Wednesday over two legs in the play-off semi-final, Alex Neil knows that his team are only one game away from Championship football.

Beating Wycombe will be an uphill battle though, as they knocked out third-placed MK Dons, and of course were promoted themselves a couple of years ago, with much of the squad who know what it takes still in tact.

The Latest: VAR considered

Taking to Twitter, Copley of The Sunderland Echo has revealed that goal-line technology will be used at Wembley Stadium for the clash, and VAR is ‘under consideration’:

“Goal-line tech to be used during Sunderland-Wycombe at Wembley. Understand no decision on VAR yet but it is under consideration.”

A final decision on the use of VAR is set to be made later this week.

The Verdict: Use it

Yes, VAR has not been used for the entirety of the League One season, but this is too huge an occasion to sacrifice accuracy for consistency – there is no reason not to make use of it.

It has been suggested that the clubs competing in the Championship play-offs would welcome the use of VAR, and so this should trickle down to both League One and League Two.

Nonetheless, the technology is simply there to help the referees get the right decisions, and with so much at stake, they should be given every tool possible to do so.

Hashim Amla retires from international cricket

He will continue to be available for domestic cricket as well as the Mzansi Super League

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2019Hashim Amla has retired from all international cricket. He will continue to play domestic cricket, and is also available for the upcoming Mzansi Super League 2019.Amla’s decision to step from the international game marks the end of a career that lasted nearly 15 years, with his Test debut having come in November 2004, in India. He made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2008 and 2009 respectively, and he made his last appearance for South Africa at the recent World Cup.He bid goodbye to the international stage with an unbeaten 80 in South Africa’s nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka, but he had an underwhelming World Cup otherwise with 203 runs overall in seven innings. Nevertheless, Amla leaves several South African limited-overs records in his wake. His 27 ODI hundreds are the most by a South African, and 24 of those came in victories. He was also the fastest batsman to 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 runs in ODI cricket. He ended his ODI career with 8,113 runs at an average of 49.46, with 39 half-centuries to go with his 27 tons. His Test successes were even more illustrious, with Amla amassing 9,282 runs at 46.64 with 28 centuries. He was the first South African to score a triple hundred in Test cricket, and finished as his country’s second-highest run-scorer in the format, second only to Jacques Kallis.Amla also has the highest Test scores for his country against England, India and the West Indies, and the highest against Australia in the post-unity period. Further highlights include his making 490 runs while being dismissed only once in the two-match Test series in India in 2010, scoring centuries in both innings of the second match to follow his unbeaten double century in the first. Two years later, he earned Man of the Series honours in both the Test and ODI series in England. His innings of 196 against Australia at Perth in December 2012 won him the Man of the Match award and was an important contribution to the Proteas’ series-winning performance, as well as helping Amla to become the No. 1 ranked batsman in the world in Test cricket in 2013.During a brief spell as captain he led the Proteas to a rare Test series win in Sri Lanka, and was named SA Cricketer of the Year in 2010, and again in 2013. While his last Test match saw him score 0 and 32 as South Africa lost 2-0 to Sri Lanka at home in February, and poor form had taken a little of the gloss off his numbers over a difficult final year in Test cricket, Amla leaves the international arena with his reputation for being the classiest, calmest man on the field intact.”Firstly, all Glory and thanks to the Almighty for granting me this Proteas journey which has been nothing but a joy and privilege,” Amla said in a statement announcing his international retirement on Thursday. “I learnt many lessons during this incredible ride, made many friends and most importantly shared in the love of a brotherhood called #proteafire.”I would like to thank my parents for their prayers, love and support, it is their shadow over me that enabled me to play for years under the Protea sun. Also, my family, friends and agent, my team mates and every member of the support staff throughout this incredible journey. A heartfelt thank you to every one of you!”The fans for energizing me when times were tough, and for celebrating with me when we succeeded together. Siyabonga South Africa!”And, of course, a very special thanks to the President and the Board at Cricket South Africa – not forgetting the Chief Executive, Mr Thabang Moroe, and his administrative team. I really appreciate all the opportunities and am truly grateful.”Love and peace.”

Monaco ‘rules’ give Folarin Balogun big USMNT tournament decision – with striker put in Copa America & 2024 Olympic Games predicament

“Rules” drawn up by Monaco are giving Folarin Balogun a big decision to make as the USMNT count down the days to Copa America and Olympic competition.

  • Forward has 10 senior caps for his country
  • Hoping to chase down medals this summer
  • Will not be allowed to grace two events
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old striker, who turned his back on England in order to represent the country of his birth at senior international level, is hoping to figure prominently in American plans for a big summer of tournament action.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Balogun has been included in Gregg Berhalter’s preliminary squad for a Copa America event on U.S. soil, but there are no guarantees regarding game time at that competition. A consolation prize of gold medal glory at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will be offered to some, with Balogun also figuring in that picture.

  • WHAT MONACO SAID

The former Arsenal frontman has, however, been made aware that he will not be allowed to link up with the USMNT ranks at two tournaments. Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro has told the club’s of plans for Games on French soil: “It’s quite clear, we want to respect the wishes of our players and at the same time meet the needs of the club. To do this, we shared with those concerned our two conditions for accepting participation in the Olympics. Firstly, go on vacation before the Games, because they finish very late and we cannot afford to see them leave. Here, we will fortunately not compete in the play-offs for the Champions League, which could have conflicted with the Olympic Games.

“Then the rules are strict: the selection must include 18 players, including a maximum of three players over 23 years old. We will see if the case arises. If Maghnes Akliouche is called up? We will let him go, obviously. For Folarin Balogun, if he is also selected for the Copa America, he will not be able to play both. It would not be fair to the club if a player could be absent so much without taking part in the pre-season.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR BALOGUN?

Balogun will be hoping to use action over the summer to play his way back into form ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, with only eight goals recorded – alongside some notable penalty misses – in his debut season at Monaco.

Mitchell exacts further punishment before Yorkshire secure status

ScorecardYorkshire made sure of their Division One status in the Specsavers County Championship for the 2019 season despite being on the receiving end of another century from Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell at Blackfinch New Road. The Tykes needed two more points to stay up and that milestone was achieved when Ed Barnard was leg before to Jack Brooks in the paceman’s final game before leaving Headingley to join Somerset. Brooks continued a splendid end to the season in which he has done much to ensure Yorkshire’s safety.Yorkshire were made to wait until the 84th over after opting to bowl via an uncontested toss due mainly to the efforts of Mitchell who completed his fourth Championship century of the campaign. He followed up his 178 in last month’s innings victory at Scarborough with another invaluable knock for his side before being eighth out, Worcestershire eventually closing on 319 for 8.It enabled Brooks to complete his third five-wicket haul in five games since announcing he has signed a three year contract at Taunton until the end of the 2021 season.A win over Lancashire sandwiched in between draws with Nottinghamshire and Hampshire from the previous three games had eased Yorkshire’s fears of the drop before the task was completed today.Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s head coach, said of Brooks five wicket haul: “It is testament to the man, He is not going to be with us next year but it would have been easy for him to fade out until the end of the season. He hasn’t done that, he’s put a real shift in for us and is one of the key reasons why we are still in Division One.”Worcestershire were playing for only pride after defeat against Essex at Chelmsford had confirmed their relegation after one season in the top flight. But their batsmen dug in and made Yorkshire work for the six wickets needed to stave off the threat of going down. No-one was more obdurate than Mitchell with his 34th first class century for the County.Tim Bresnan made the only breakthrough of the morning session when Tom Fell (19) was squared up by the former England seamer and provided Jack Leaning with a straightforward catch at third slip.Moeen Ali was greeted with warm applause in his first appearance for Worcestershire since leading them to their first Vitality Blast trophy success nine days ago.He ensured left arm spinner and Yorkshire debutant left-arm spinner James Logan had a chastening introduction into the attack with a six over long on and then a slog sweep from Moeen which brought the same result.Moeen, who had scored a double century at Scarborough, again threatened a major contribution and completed a 69-ball half century.Mitchell had an escape on 43 when he was dropped by keeper Jonathan Tattersall off a Brooks delivery. But Tom Kohler-Cadmore made no mistake when Moeen (60) went for a pull in the first over back into the attack from Yorkshire skipper Steven Patterson and only managed to top edge through to his former team-mate.Joe Clarke, in his final match for Worcestershire before joining Nottinghamshire on a four-year contract, was given a searching examination. The England Lions batsman made just eight from 46 balls before he aimed a drive at Brooks and was bowled. That secured the first point for the visitors and then Alex Milton tentatively pushed forward to Ben Coad and fell to a sharp low catch by Kohler-Cadmore. A fourth wicket of the afternoon session was accrued when Ben Cox was was leg before to Books.Ed Barnard (34) kept Mitchell company in a stand of 88 in 24 overs before his dismissal to Brooks eased any Yorkshire fears. Brooks made it two wickets in two balls as Wayne Parnell was pouched at second slip and then Mitchell’s resistance ended after making 127 when he holed out to deep mid wicket off the same bowler. His 252 ball knock contained 17 fours.

Celtic contacted over 38 y/o key figure, unexpected Parkhead exit on cards

Celtic are thriving on the field under Brendan Rodgers, but they may now be set for an unexpected turn of events behind the scenes following recent developments.

Brendan Rodgers aims to maintain Celtic winning culture

Evaluating the landscape of Scottish football, Celtic find themselves head and shoulders above the rest as they close in on another domestic treble.

Brendan Rodgers knows his side only need to defeat Aberdeen at Hampden later this month to achieve that feat, while he is also the third-most successful manager in the club’s illustrious history behind Willie Maley and Jock Stein.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

However, there has been some speculation surrounding the Celtic boss as he heads into the final year of his contract at Parkhead with little to no update on a potential extension.

Like any manager worth his salt, Rodgers wants full backing from the Hoops hierarchy before his side take on the challenge of facing whoever they draw in the final round of Champions League qualifying.

Citing the need for signings, Celtic are very interested in Red Star Belgrade defender Veljko Milosavljevic, potentially laying down a marker with regard to what supporters can expect from their club in the summer market.

Fewer minutes than Nawrocki: Celtic must axe flop who's "not good enough"

Celtic must finally part ways with this player who has played fewer minutes than Maik Nawrocki.

ByDan Emery May 9, 2025

Stability at Parkhead has led to a steady stream of success. That hasn’t just come from the manager, but the rank and file department members that exist below his sphere of influence.

Nevertheless, everyone at one point will look to strike out on their own should the opportunity present itself. That is just the reality of career progression in the cold light of day.

With that in mind, Celtic could face a fight to hold onto one of their trusted coaches after the club were approached over his availability, per recent developments.

Swansea City approach Celtic to land Darren O'Dea

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph on X, Swansea City have approached Celtic as they look to appoint Darren O’Dea as their assistant manager following Alan Sheehan’s appointment as head coach at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Former Republic of Ireland international O’Dea is currently the Bhoys’ Professional Player Pathway Manager, though he could now be set to swap Glasgow for the EFL Championship side if all parties agree on a deal.

O’Dea has also managed Celtic’s B Team in conjunction with Stephen McManus, and his departure may come as something of a surprise despite his ambitions of entering the dugout at senior level.

Either way, Hoops fans and figures from inside the club will wish him well if he were to take up Swansea on their offer, given his reputation as a bright young coach who has worked his way up the Lennoxtown ranks.
