Leeds could land dream Firpo replacement in deal for 6ft2 sensation

Leeds United will know, if they do manage to seal promotion up to the Premier League, that there are a number of problem areas that will need to be strengthened in order to adjust to the step-up.

The main position that has caused concern this season has arguably been the left-back spot, with Junior Firpo now the main body occupying this spot after the likes of Djed Spence and Sam Byram have played there as well this season.

Yet, Daniel Farke could be hesitant to leap back into the top flight with the ex-Barcelona man as his main option down the left flank, with Firpo having struggled in the elite division before – only contributing to one clean sheet being picked up from 19 games played, when last at the level.

The Whites look to be already actively shopping for a replacement for Firpo therefore, with Leeds' list of targets taking them to the Eredivisie, where they have previously struck gold with the purchase of Crysencio Summerville.

Leeds looking for new left-back

According to a report from Spanish outlet AS earlier this week, Leeds are looking at current PEC Zwolle defender Anselmo Garcia MacNulty as a potential new left-back addition this summer, with the 21-year-old starring in this position in the Netherlands this season.

Often utilised as a centre-back at previous employers NAC Breda, his 11th-placed club in the top Dutch division in Zwolle have succeeded in playing him down the left flank this campaign instead which has certainly caught the eye of the Whites.

Confident with the ball at his feet as an attacking defender, as seen in this goal back in 2018, MacNulty has one goal and two assists next to his name from 29 games this campaign.

That has also piqued the interest of Enzo Maresca's title-winning Leicester City, who could well be seen as the frontrunners for the 6 foot 2 titan's signature if Leeds fail to win promotion from the Championship.

Leeds will just pray that they can get in another gem from the Netherlands like Summerville if they beat Maresca's men to this deal, with the pair even potentially striking up a deadly partnership in England by both playing down the left-hand side.

How MacNulty compares to Firpo

With Leeds exciting fans this season with a whole host of young gems shining, with the glaring example being 18-year-old Archie Gray, bringing in another raw star of the future in MacNulty feels like a signing that should slot seamlessly into Farke's side.

MacNulty could go on to be viewed as an upgrade on Firpo if given time to flourish under the German, with his numbers – according to FBref – not far off the up-and-down 27-year-old's, who has come into his own in 2024 with seven assists notched up.

Junior Firpo

The Republic of Ireland U21 international has the same attacking, full-throttle approach when on ball to that of Firpo's, making 4.36 progressive passes this year on average per 90 minutes pulling on a Zwolle strip.

Firpo does just beat MacNulty, with 5.04 next to his name in contrast, but the 21-year-old should only get better with time and the fact he would be surrounded by exceptional talents such as Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto if he relocated to England should also see him thrive.

Crysencio Summerville for Leeds United.

MacNulty's ability to also play in the heart of defence – where he played 33 of his 38 games for Breda – will be another trait Farke loves when assessing the 21-year-old's suitability for the Leeds squad, with question marks surrounding the futures of Joe Rodon and Liam Cooper at Elland Road for very different reasons at centre-back.

Leeds will know Firpo's electric form this year could be a flash in the pan again, and with the success story of Summerville clear for all to see after joining from Feyenoord, with 30 goal contributions this campaign, MacNulty could be a risky buy that pays off.

49ers could drop Meslier by signing "outstanding" EFL star for Leeds

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing a goalkeeper from the Championship.

David Warner 'mentally as strong as ever' ahead of international resumption

The batsman’s long-time mentor Trent Woodhill says the opener remains hungry for runs across all three formats

Andrew McGlashan30-Aug-2020

David Warner cuts a short ball•AFP

David Warner’s long-time mentor Trent Woodhill believes the batsman remains fully motivated to continue across all formats of the game as he prepares to resume international cricket after a five-month break.Speaking recently, Warner suggested that the hub and bio-secure lifestyle of cricket in the Covid-19-ridden era, and the likelihood it will keep players away from their families for long periods of time, could lead him to reconsider his workload. Before Covid-19 brought cricket to a halt in early March, Warner gave a strong indication that he would consider moving aside from the T20 format after the back-to-back T20 World Cups, which had been originally scheduled for Australia this year and then India in 2021.ALSO READ: Back in Australia set-up, Marcus Stoinis wants to ‘change the dynamic’ of his battingHowever, the pandemic has forced a reshuffle, meaning the Australia event is in 2022, and if Warner wants another home World Cup, he would need to go beyond a 2021 cut-off.”Mentally he’s as strong as ever and as bullish as ever,” Woodhill said from Australia’s base at the Ageas Bowl. “I haven’t been given any indication he’s not hungry for more runs across all formats.”A year ago, Warner was in the midst of an Ashes series that would bring a record-breakingly low return of 95 runs – 61 of which came in one innings at Headingley – as he was dismissed by Stuart Broad seven times in 10 innings. But the 2019-2020 season brought a prolific return to form across all formats: 786 runs runs in Test cricket at 131.00, 277 runs in ODIs at 46.16 and 415 runs at 138.33 in T20Is. It was enough to earn him the Allan Border Medal as the Men’s Player of the Year.Woodhill took huge satisfaction from seeing how Warner responded to his travails in England, but the manner of the revival did not surprise him.”He has amazing mental capacity to bounce back,” Woodhill said. “I was so proud of him with the 300 in Adelaide [against Pakistan] just because of that bouncing back from adversity. That’s champions worldwide, whether it’s someone I know or someone I don’t, it’s always great to see. David worked really hard after the Ashes to regroup and he came back firing. Watching him back the other day in the trial match he’s in a really good place with his cricket.”I think when players reach early 30s, their game is about being consistent and the challenge is not short-cutting preparation and, if you watch David train, whether it’s from a skill set or physical standpoint, he doesn’t take any shortcuts.”For Woodhill this tour is a return to the international coaching set-up for the first time since he worked for New Zealand in 2012. “Being back in international colours is really good, there’s a definite edge to it; the players’ focus is on one team rather than seven or eight teams is an enjoyable experience,” he said.Warner made 42 off 35 balls in Australia’s first intersquad match of the tour on Friday before the contest was cut short by rain. They were due to play a 50-over match on Sunday before further inter-squad games early next week ahead of the opening T20I on Friday.

Dom Sibley vows to be 'a bit more proactive' after spin slowdowns

England opener “extremely disappointed” with Manchester dismissal to Yasir Shah

Matt Roller11-Aug-2020There is every chance that Dom Sibley will finish his first home summer as a Test cricketer as England’s highest run-scorer. As things stand, he is second only to Ben Stokes in the charts, who will miss the final two Tests due to family reasons; since his debut in November, only Stokes and Joe Root have been more prolific. With that in mind, it is something of a surprise to hear his assessment of his time in the side so far. “I do feel, sitting here now, that I’ve got a lot more to give,” he said on Tuesday. “I’ve only sort of shown myself to a certain level at this stage, and I do feel like I’ve let opportunities slip to score maybe four or five hundreds. That might be sounding greedy and it might sound unrealistic but that’s the way I think.”That mentality has served Sibley well to date. After piling on the runs in county cricket last season – he scored 300 runs and faced 1000 more balls than anyone else in Division One of the County Championship – he has bedded into his spot at the top of the order after an unconvincing start, with hundreds against South Africa and West Indies and an average a shade below 40.ALSO READ: Buttler clicks, but have England found the key to unlocking his potential? And yet there have been several occasions – most notably in the two Manchester Tests against West Indies – when Sibley’s presence at the crease has provoked groans and mutters. His strike rate across the course of his career is a sedate 36.57 – 2.19 runs per over – and his caution against spin in particular has been a point of frustration for those hoping England will accelerate.”I am trying to learn and improve as much as possible,” he said. “That’s the thing that I probably need to do a bit better, especially against spin, is to try and rotate the strike as much as possible; be a bit more proactive. I’ve been working really hard on that.” He has picked the brains of Graham Thorpe, England’s assistant coach and himself a strong player of spin, as well as asking some of his team-mates for advice. But in the first Test against Pakistan, his desire to show a more proactive side to his game against spin proved his undoing in the second innings. Yasir Shah had joked to England’s batsmen on the fourth day that conditions in Manchester suited him even better than those in Dubai. And after padding away two overs of legspin from round the wicket, Sibley was suckered into a drive when Yasir came back over, slashing to slip and muttering in frustration to himself as he dragged himself off.

“I was obviously extremely disappointed with the way I got out in that second innings because I had worked really hard, [and had] been really disciplined against him,” he said. “I did feel like I wanted to be that person, not out at the end when we chased that down. But it wasn’t to be and you try and learn from those mistakes.”It’s a fine balance, I suppose, because I want to be out there and put such a high price on my wicket and do a good job for the team. But at the same time, trying to find that balance between [that and] having the bravery to play the shots that I feel like I know I have in the locker.”It’s just a case of having the bravery and confidence to do that in the Test arena when the scrutiny is higher and you might get judged in how you get out.”Sibley was “extremely disappointed with his dismissal to Yasir Shah•Pool/AFP via Getty Images

In particular, Sibley has realised when batting with Root – who averages 63.38 against spin over the course of his career, rattling along at a strike rate of 59.50 in the process – that there is work to be done. And while he is happy with his record against spin in county cricket, he is aware that with more attention on him, it might not be so easy to drop anchor.”I feel confident in playing spin and I have done. When you get to this level, and suddenly loads of eyes are on you, and you may not be scoring as quickly as other people in the team, you get judged.”I have always felt very confident and scored runs against good bowlers in country cricket. But when you get to international cricket, with the spotlight being on you, you get those things pointed out a bit more. It’s made me think that I need to work a bit harder.”When you are batting with someone like Rooty at the other end who is making playing spin look pretty easy, it makes me think that I need to try and take my game against spin to the next level.”With as many as seven Tests in Asia in the pipeline this winter – two in Sri Lanka, and five in India or UAE – there is a sense that this biggest challenge is still to come.

Arteta must boldly drop 6/10 Arsenal ace and unleash "sensational talent"

The weekend was one of mixed emotions for Arsenal fans. On one hand, Liverpool leapfrogged them into first place, but on the other, they came away from the Etihad with a point.

It's the first time since May 2016 that the Gunners have avoided defeat away to Manchester City, and while it would've been better to collect all three points, one still keeps them in the Premier League title race.

It was a result built largely on an immense defensive effort from the entire XI, with very few chances coming for the likes of Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus.

That said, the Brazilian probably had the best chances for the north Londoners, and while he certainly wasn't terrible, he probably shouldn't start tonight.

Gabriel Jesus' performance against City

It's been an interesting season for the former City man. Despite looking dangerous in the Champions League and racking up six goal involvements in as many games, he's struggled to do the same in the Premier League, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 20 games.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-elye-wahi-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta

This lacklustre form has only been exacerbated by his consistent injury problems, which have seen him miss 16 games this season and the fact that, in his absence, the team seems to have found their best form with Havertz as a spearhead.

However, the "tremendous" São Paulo-born gem, as Arteta described him, is clearly a fantastically talented player, and so it makes sense for the Spaniard to try what he did at the Etihad and start the 26-year-old on the left of a three.

This could well be the best way to get the most out of Jesus going forward, but in Sunday's game, he still struggled to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

It's an opinion shared by GOAL's Charlie Watts, who gave him a 6/10 on the day and wrote that he was both 'lively and frustrating', an assessment backed up by his individual statistics from the game.

In his 72 minutes of action, the right-footed marksman registered an expected goals figure of 0.17 and an expected assists figure of 0.26. He took two shots that were off target, succeeded in three of his four dribbles, was accurate in just 80% of his passes, lost eight of his 12 duels, was dribbled past twice, and committed three fouls.

Lastly, while dangerous, Jesus couldn't provide Arsenal with a genuine outlet to relieve the immense pressure they were under. So, for tonight's game against Luton Town, Arteta should drop him to the bench.

Why Gabriel Martinelli should start

Yes, the player in question is the incredibly dynamic Gabriel Martinelli, and there are two key reasons why he should be selected to start ahead of Jesus.

The first reason is simple: he's Arsenal's best left winger. In 46 games last year, the "sensational talent", as U23 scout Antonio Mango described him, scored 15 goals and provided six assists. While his return of eight goals and five assists this season is a little underwhelming, he has still looked incredibly dangerous when on the pitch.

The 22-year-old's blistering pace and tenacious style of play have made him an essential element to how Arsenal attack teams. His ability to break down the left, push back the defending team and bring his teammates into play will be crucial if Arsenal are to end their two-decade title drought this season.

It should be no surprise that the three games he hasn't started recently have also coincided with a drop in the goals scored by his teammates.

Reason number two is related to that, and it's all about his match sharpness.

When Arteta introduced the former Ituano gem towards the end of the City game, it was quite clear that he wasn't up to speed yet. So a game against a much easier opponent at the Emirates is the perfect opportunity to play him back to full readiness, especially with the two legs against Bayern Munich just around the corner.

Arsenal may have the perfect Nketiah replacement in "immense" Hale End gem

The incredible youngster has been on fire this season.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 1, 2024

Ultimately, the Gunners will likely prove too strong for the Hatters regardless of which Brazilian starts out on the left, but with there being no margin for error anymore, it is imperative that Martinelli is fit and ready to go for the rest of the run-in.

Last two ODIs of India-South Africa series to be played behind closed doors

Ticket sales stopped at Lucknow and Kolkata after the Indian government’s directive

The remaining two ODIs of the ongoing series between India and South Africa will be played to empty stadiums. The development comes in the wake of the Indian government directing the BCCI and other national sporting federations including the Indian Olympics Committee on Thursday to “avoid” mass gatherings at sporting events as it takes steps to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Lucknow will be hosting the second ODI on March 15 and Kolkata the final ODI on March 18.Officials at the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and Cricket Association of Bengal confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they had received the advisory issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports earlier in the day.The sports ministry’s advisory read: “To deal with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has issued advisories and advised the state governments to take appropriate action under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897.”You are advised to adhere to advisories issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and ensure that no public gathering takes place in any sporting event. In the event the sporting event cannot be avoided, the same could be done without allowing gathering of the people, including spectators.”The UPCA, its secretary Yudhveer Singh said, consulted the BCCI once it had got the government advisory. “Once we received the note from the government we checked with BCCI and then decided to conduct the match without spectators,” Singh said.Former Bengal player Snehasish Ganguly, who is now the CAB secretary, too, said ticket sales were instantly stopped earlier on Thursday. “We have got a clear circular form the central government saying spectators not to be allowed for the matches in the stadium,” Snehasish, who is the elder brother of the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, said. “We stopped the ticket sales as soon as we got the government circular. We had sold 10,000 tickets on . We had also started selling tickets to the [CAB] clubs from Wednesday, but that has also been stopped. The gate sales were scheduled to commence from tomorrow, but that will not happen now.”Snehasish said that financially the staging associations would be affected but the CAB understood these were “sensitive” times and it would comply with the directives.Later on Thursday evening, the BCCI sent out a statement saying it was “working closely with the Government of India along with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare” and after holding discussions with both ministries, it decided that the remaining two ODIs “will be played without any public gathering, including spectators”.For the first ODI in Dharamsala, a decent crowd turned out on Thursday despite the spectre of the pandemic as well rain threat looming large. In the end, the match was washed out without a ball being bowled.

HD Ackerman appointed Afghanistan batting coach

The former South Africa batsman will link up with the team before their T20I series against Ireland in March

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2020Afghanistan’s coaching staff, helmed by Lance Klusener, has been bolstered by the appointment of HD Ackerman, the former South Africa Test batsman, cricket commentator and columnist. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Ackerman, 46, would start work with the team on March 1, ahead of the national team’s three-T20I series in India against Ireland, which will be followed by a one-off Test. His contract will run till the end of 2020. Ackerman played four Test matches for South Africa, two against Pakistan and two against Sri Lanka, all at home in 1998, scoring one half-century in aggregating 161 runs at an average of 20.12. He had a much more fruitful time in first-class cricket, though, playing the 1993-94 season all the way to mid-2009, in which he scored 14,625 runs, including a triple-century, at an average of 43.65 in 220 outings. He also played 230 List A matches and 55 T20s.The T20I series against Ireland will be played in Greater Noida, near the Indian capital of New Delhi, on March 6, 8 and 10.

Man Utd eyeing move for "fantastic" new manager and may offer him £150k-p/w

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United decide to sack Erik ten Hag before the end of the season, or once it's concluded, then they could enter a congested manager market.

Arch-rivals Liverpool are already searching for a new boss after Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he'd be stepping down in the summer, while Barcelona are in the same boat after Xavi announced his attention to leave. Bayern Munich are the latest to enter the fold after opting to part company with Thomas Tuchel amid their struggles in the Bundesliga.

Man Utd have made approach for £26m Spurs target who Jose Mourinho loves

He recently scored his first-ever goal in remarkable fashion.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 27, 2024

Elsewhere, there's uncertainty around Premier League rivals Chelsea and their boss Mauricio Pochettino after a defeat to injury-hit Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The Argentine had a chance to relieve the pressure on his shoulders, with the Blues down in 11th in the table, but his stock may now have fallen further.

Man Utd eyeing Inzaghi swoop

Now, according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via Football Italia), some of those clubs could pursue Inter boss Simone Inzaghi. Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have all "started to gather information" with a view to possibly making a move at the end of the season.

simone-inzaghi-inter-manager-live-updates-spurs-tottenham-nagelsmann

Inzaghi is happy at Inter right now, but his current contract is due to expire in just over 12 months' time. He's seeking a two-year extension to his current €5.5m per year deal, but his Premier League suitors, including Ratcliffe and Man Utd, could be willing to offer as much as €9m, which works out at around £150,000 a week. Barcelona are also admirers, but it's unclear whether they can match that kind of financial package.

"Fantastic" Inzaghi is turning Inter into a European force

Described as a "fantastic" coach by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Inzaghi started out as the manager of Lazio from 2016 to 2021. He won the Coppa Italia in 2018/19, having been runner-up two years earlier, and then joined Inter following the departure of Antonio Conte.

In his first season, he delivered the Coppa Italia to soften the blow of narrowly missing out to Milan in the title race, and while they dropped a place to third last term, they truly made headlines in other competitions. In addition to retaining the cup, Inzaghi led Inter to the final of the Champions League, where they narrowly lost to Manchester City.

Everything has come together beautifully this year, and the Nerazzurri are running away with the league. After winning 21 and losing just one of their first 25 games, they sit nine points clear of Juventus at the top of the table.

Across Europe's big five leagues, only Bayer Leverkusen (2.65) can better their record of 2.64 points per match, and nobody can match their average of 0.48 goals conceded per game, nor their goal difference of +51. That solidity hasn't come at the expense of attacking fireworks, though, with only Bayern (2.7) and Leverkusen (2.48) averaging more goals than their 2.44.

Inzaghi, named the Serie A coach of the month for October and January, is producing one of the outstanding managerial efforts in European football right now, and so it's inevitable that clubs like United are taking notice.

Real Madrid beat at least six clubs to 'really easy' Dean Huijsen signing as agent reveals process behind defender's 'dream' transfer

Agent Ali Barat has pulled back the curtain on Dean Huijsen's summer transfer to Real Madrid, revealing 'more than seven' clubs were in the running. Barat described the deal as 'very easy' thanks to a £50 million release clause and the Spanish defender's clear desire to fulfil his lifelong 'dream' of playing for Los Blancos.

Barat reveals the nature of Huijsen

Barat has revealed that Madrid beat "more than seven" other top clubs to the signing of defender Huijsen, describing the process as "very easy" due to the player's lifelong "dream" of moving to the Santiago Bernabeu. Speaking to , Barat detailed the straightforward nature of the blockbuster transfer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportAgent explains 'very easy' transfer process

Despite significant interest in the 20-year-old from across Europe, Barat explained that a release clause in the player's contract simplified the negotiations. The main task was to present the various projects to the defender and his family before a final decision was made.

"With Dean, it was very easy," Barat said. "I think there were more than seven clubs that wanted him. There was a £50 million clause too. So there were no real negotiations to do with the club, which made the job much easier. It was just a matter of visiting all the clubs, listening to all the projects."

'His dream was to play for Real Madrid'

Once the options were presented, the agent confirmed that the player's personal ambition made the final choice a simple one. Barat noted that Huijsen's connection to Spain made the move particularly meaningful.

"We sat down with Dean and his family to make his choice," he continued. "For him, it was clear: his dream was to play for Real Madrid. He's a Spanish international. So I think for him, it was even more important. Plus, he was a Real Madrid fan when he was younger."

Getty Images SportWhat next for Huijsen after controversial suspension?

Huijsen has started his career in Madrid brightly, but will be forced to watch from the sidelines this weekend. The centre-back is set to miss Saturday's La Liga match against Espanyol after the Spanish Football Federation's appeals committee controversially upheld a one-match ban for a red card he received in the 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The suspension was confirmed despite Spain's refereeing committee (CTA) admitting in a video review that a yellow card would have been the "most appropriate punishment." The decision prompted a frustrated reaction from the player, who posted on Instagram: "They admit the mistake but I'm still punished. A good image for Spanish football."

Cricket ready to honour Phillip Hughes on 10-year anniversary

Players will wear black armbands in all three upcoming Sheffield Shield games while Hughes will also be remembered during the second Test

AAP22-Nov-2024Cricket Australia will fly flags at half-mast and black armbands will return to players’ uniforms as the sport prepares to mark the 10-year anniversary of Phillip Hughes’ death.Saturday’s Sheffield Shield round will begin two weeks of commemorations for Hughes, whose life was tragically cut short days before his 26th birthday in 2014.Officials have adopted a uniform approach across the board, with Hughes’ former team South Australia to face Western Australia in Adelaide from Saturday.Hughes’ childhood team New South Wales will also host Tasmania at the SCG from Sunday, while Queensland and Victoria play at the Gabba.Players will wear black armbands in all three games, while a moment’s silence will also be observed before play on day four of all matches. For the Sydney and Brisbane matches, Wednesday’s final day of play will coincide with the 10-year anniversary of Hughes’ death on November 27, 2014.Officials have opted to use the Adelaide Test between Australia and India as the best time to celebrate Hughes with the national team, while sharing their plans with his family. His passing will be marked when that match begins on December 6, almost 10 years to the day since Test cricket resumed in Australia after Hughes’ death. CA has filmed a documentary in conjunction with Hughes’ family to mark the occasion, which will be broadcast before play in that Test. Many column inches have also already been dedicated to the opener, who played 26 Tests for Australia and was earmarked as a long-term fixture in the side.”We understand this will be a time of reflection for the many people who knew and admired Phillip Hughes,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said. “We wanted to ensure that the Hughes family, particularly, were comfortable with any commemorations and that we celebrate Phillip’s life and incredible achievements appropriately.”Hughes’ death two days after he was struck in the neck by a ball at the SCG in 2014 remains one of the most difficult periods in cricket history. The Macksville junior was one of the most popular members of the national team, and remains close to the heart of several Australian players.Off the field, his legacy remains strong, with Hughes’ family still involved in his angus cattle farm Four 0 Eight on the NSW north coast.Cricket initially found itself at a loss of how to play on, with Hughes having been set to bat his way back into the Australian team when not out on 63 at the SCG.He was posthumously named as Australia’s 13th man for the rejigged first Test in Adelaide, where 63 seconds of applause were observed before play.
