Ashton Turner: 'As confident in my leadership as I've ever been'

Perth Scorchers’ captain talks BBL success, captaincy philosophy and a batting revival

Tristan Lavalette13-Feb-2023In trademark style, on brand for five-time BBL champions Perth Scorchers, unobtrusive captain Ashton Turner preferred not to fuel growing debate over whether he should become Australia’s next T20I captain. When asked by ESPNcricinfo, Turner, instead, paid tribute to outgoing Aaron Finch, who recently retired from international cricket to leave a leadership vacuum for Australia ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.”I’m forever grateful for Finchy, the influence he had on me and the confidence he had in backing me,” said Turner, who has played nine ODIs and 18 T20Is from 2017-21. “As he steps aside, they are big shoes to fill.”But Turner, a disciple of the well-worn Scorchers manual of not giving much away publicly, then paused before ever so subtly putting his hand up. “I’m as confident in my game and leadership as I’ve ever been,” he said.Related

The 30-year-old Turner has been bandied around as a possible Finch successor after leading Scorchers to a successful title defence during a dominant campaign where he rediscovered his belligerent batting. After several lean years, which put him on the outer of Australia’s white-ball teams and Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield side, Turner averaged 42.33 at a strike-rate of 155.51.More impressive than those stats, Turner continually rescued Scorchers and came through in an epic BBL final against Brisbane Heat. In a player-of-the-final performance, he hit a 32-ball 53 as Scorchers thrillingly chased down 176 in front of almost 54,000 rowdy fans at Optus Stadium.Turner had similarly lifted Scorchers out of trouble with a half-century in last year’s final against Sydney Sixers, an innings which triggered his rejuvenation with the bat. With his Shield career stalled, having not played a first-class match since October 2020, Turner made a conscious decision to focus his attention on the shorter formats.”I’ve committed more time to white-ball cricket in the last 12 months, more than I ever have before,” said Turner, who remains available for Shield selection but is currently not part of WA’s powerful line-up.

One of the things I’m proudest of is that I feel like I’ve been able to empower a lot of guys in our group. If I wasn’t to play, we have guys who could walk in seamlessly and do a great job

“That’s where my career has been trending. I made a really deliberate effort to keep chipping away at white ball cricket 12 months a year. Generally in life if you commit more time to something, you’re going to improve.”His prowess in the middle-latter overs should be particularly appealing for the national hierarchy, whose selection of big-hitter Tim David at last year’s T20 World Cup underlined their desire to find a specialist finisher.Turner never got going previously in international cricket, averaging just 12 with a strike-rate of 84 in T20Is, but he did smash a 43-ball 84 in an ODI against India in Mohali in 2019.”I’ve had small tastes of success in international cricket, but clearly wasn’t able to perform consistently. I know I didn’t play the best I could,” he said.During his bounce back BBL season, Turner unleashed a formidable range of strokes all around the wicket having often previously relied on hitting straight for boundaries.’We’ve earned the right to think we can win games. We believe in what we’re going to do’•Cricket Australia/Getty Images”In previous seasons, my boundaries and scoring areas were consistent,” he said. “But grounds have different attributes. How you bat at Optus Stadium is different to the SCG or Bellerive. I felt like I had a clearer game plan and could trust myself.”Turner’s mastery of chasing helped transform Scorchers, whose traditional blueprint of success was to bat first and then let their miserly attack defend any such total.Scorchers had a 10-2 record this season when chasing with the only blemishes being narrow losses on the road to Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes. What had been seen as a potential weakness for Scorchers suddenly became a major strength.”There was no change to the plan, our hand was forced in the early games with teams deciding to bat first,” he said. “Momentum is a powerful thing. Once we got on a roll, I asked the players what they wanted to do.”The consensus was that the batters wanted to chase to dictate the tempo that they needed to bat. The bowlers enjoyed bowling first, so it was the way that it worked out.”That process helps illustrate Turner’s inclusive leadership, where he collaborates with decision making.”Rarely do I make a decision by myself, I spend a lot of time consulting,” he said. “I love to hear the input of other squad members and support staff. We have good conversations and come to good conclusions.”One of the things I’m proudest of is that I feel like I’ve been able to empower a lot of guys in our group. If I wasn’t to play, we have guys who could walk in seamlessly and do a great job like Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis and Mitch Marsh who have great leadership qualities.”Turner’s encouraging leadership particularly came to the fore under immense pressure in the BBL final when he was run-out during a pivotal moment after a horrendous mix-up with inexperienced batter Nick Hobson.”When we were sitting there waiting for the decision, he said ‘mate you’re a gun, you’ll get us over the line, you’ll be absolutely fine, hit good shots’,” recalled Hobson, an accountant in his day job who hit the winning runs to become an unexpected hero.”There was no resentment [over the run-out]. He’s an amazing leader. He gives his players so much belief.”Turner, naturally, played down his pep talk but it undoubtedly reinforced his ethos.”It’s easy to give guys pats on the back when we’re ahead of the game, I want to do it in every moment,” he said. “Whether it’s a high pressure moment or not…consistency is really important.”In T20 cricket there isn’t room for guys to be hesitant or doubt themselves. I want everyone to feel empowered to play the brand they want to play. I never want anyone to feel restricted.”After they overcame mostly playing on the road in BBL11 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this season’s triumph was marked by Scorchers navigating a slew of injuries and absences of overseas recruits.

It failed to destabilise them as an unruffled team repeatedly dug deep in key moments to win their second title under Turner.”It might come across as calmness but it boils down to confidence,” Turner said. “You look calm under pressure if you are confident in your skills, your team-mates and the planning and processes.”We’ve earned the right to think we can win games. We believe in what we’re going to do.”Turner is likely to be in demand on the T20 circuit, although a return to the IPL where he had an inglorious stint in 2019, is not forthcoming just yet.”I don’t lose sleep where I’m not playing but I know I could perform if opportunities arise in the IPL,” he said. “It’s a motivation for me to test myself against the best players and teams.”Who knows where Turner will be at in his career when next BBL season rolls around, but he’s already excited about plotting Scorchers’ bid for a historic hat-trick of titles in his methodical and unassuming style.”We’ve prided ourselves on continuity. Fundamentally the playing squad is going to look similar and we can take a lot of confidence out of that,” he said. “I’m really enjoying playing cricket with a smile and just helping every team I’m part of become better.”

Their own Rodri: Man Utd confident they will sign "colossal" £100m + star

da spicy bet: Manchester United are issuing the perfect response to a 2024/25 campaign that left everything to be desired.

da casino: Though INEOS’ efforts to bring in new signings proved protracted at the start, there has been an impetus on strengthening with genuine quality, the frontline revamped through deals for Premier League stars Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, followed by the £74m acquisition of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, one of the most talented young strikers in Europe.

FFC Manchester United Sesko Mbeumo Cunha

Ruben Amorim was dealt a tough hand when leaving his high-flying Sporting Lisbon project and taking over an Old Trafford side in disrepair, but he’s weathered the storm and has hunkered down, reshaping the team, stamping his mark on the squad.

Man Utd confident they will sign PL star

Technical director Jason Wilcox remains hard at work. Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been slated to replace the beleaguered Andre Onana between the sticks, while talks continue over the sales of several first-team drifters, chief of which being Alejandro Garnacho, who is expected to join Chelsea before the end of the window.

However, it’s clear that Amorim is also hoping to sign a dynamic number 6 before the end of the month, viewing a robust profile in the role as being perfect to take his side to the next level and leave a significant impression on the Premier League, pushing United back into the ascendancy of European football.

According to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, via TEAMtalk, Manchester United are growing in confidence as they chase a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba.

The all-action midfielder, 21, has previously been reported by Fabrizio Romano to be the focus of new talks between the Premier League rivals, though the Seagulls don’t want to sell and will make any bid extremely difficult, pricing their star at £104m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Baleba, however, is attracted by the thought of joining the Old Trafford side and Amorim is intent on bringing players who want to fight for the badge.

What Carlos Baleba would bring to Man Utd

One of Man United’s most fatal flaws throughout the post-Fergie era has been signing established ‘superstars’, who perhaps have the headline name but have been there and done that, and thus don’t have the fire in their belly that the club need.

Baleba is the perfect profile to buck that trend, and what’s more, so are the already-made deals completed over the past few months. Whisper it quietly, but something feels different about the Red Devils this time.

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba

Brighton have a knack for identifying and developing midfielders. Their talent ID is superlative and mistake-free. And with Baleba eager to switch the sandy south coast for Manchester’s bustling streets, INEOS and Amorim have a glorious opportunity to take this Man United team into their next phase.

The 21-year-old powerhouse is a holding midfielder with bags of energy and an attacking flair, lending itself to an influential position in Fabian Hurtzler’s Seagulls team.

And considering the player’s “colossal” performances so far in the Premier League, as have been noted by Brighton reporter Aden-Jay Wood, he could revolutionise United’s midfield, maybe even turning out to be their own version of Manchester City sensation Rodri.

Rodri’s is a name that we all know. The Spain international is one of the greatest players of his generation and has won the full gamut at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 26 goals and supplying 32 assists across 265 matches in all competitions.

But he started somewhere, and that first campaign in the Premier League proved tricky, with City losing their Premier League title to Liverpool.

Rodri still made an exciting impression, though, and it’s curious to note that Baleba for Brighton last season ranked up quite nicely against that version of the Iberian midfielder.

Rodri might be a Ballon d’Or-winning superstar, but when he first arrived on English shores and got to work under Pep Guardiola’s wing, he had much to learn, and it’s promising to note that Baleba in his youthful period is on the same level as the Spaniard’s one-time iteration.

FBref recorded that the Cameroonian midfielder ranks among the top 12% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90 too, thus illustrating his capacity to slide forward and progress play for his team.

Though it would take much time and effort to build Baleba up to a position where he could be considered the finest midfielder in the Premier League, one of the best in the world, he certainly has the potential to be just that.

There’s plenty of rocky terrain still to traverse before Man United crest this mountain, which has loomed before them for so long, but it’s not unjust to suggest that things are changing, and that the signings being made have the potential to drive an exciting new era.

Were Baleba to join, Amorim’s midfield would be revolutionised, with a centrepiece carrying all the potential to emulate Rodri and become an all-powerful presence in a Manchester midfield.

Kuhnemann cleared of suspect bowling action by ICC

Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann has been cleared to bowl in international cricket by the ICC. He had been reported for a suspect action following the two-Test series in Sri Lanka where he had picked up 16 wickets in the series as Australia won 2-0.Kuhmemann, who had never previously been reported in a professional career dating back to 2017, was tested in Brisbane and learnt of the outcome on Wednesday.”He…underwent an independent bowling assessment at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on 15 February, where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations,” an ICC statement said.Related

Kuhnemann could have continued playing domestic cricket while his action was assessed although the thumb he dislocated during the BBL has kept him out of action since. It is not known yet if he will be fit in time for Tasmania’s next Sheffield Shield game against Queensland in Hobart from March 6. He is a strong chance of being selected for the Test tour of West Indies in June and July.During the testing process, Kuhnemann went through a session that lasted more than one hour, where he was asked to bowl at a similar speed and with similar revolutions to what he did in the second Test in Galle. ICC experts were at hand to observe the proceedings as Kuhnemann bowled, wearing markers on his body and surrounded by several high-speed cameras and a 3D motion analysis system.”We are pleased for Matt that this matter is now resolved,” Ben Oliver, CA executive general manager national teams said in a statement. “It has been a challenging period for Matt, however he has carried himself exceptionally well.”He has had the full support of Australian cricket and he can now move forward to the next phase of his international career with great confidence.”Not long after he had been reported, his Australia team-mates rallied behind him, with Steven Smith, Australia’s captain in Pat Cummins’ absence, saying, “It’s come as a bit of a surprise to me. He has been playing for eight years in professional cricket and nothing has been said in that amount of time.”I am thinking of him, at present, he has to go through the process. We’re confident he will pass. He will go through that process back home. We wish him all the best.”Kuhnemann has taken 25 wickets in five Tests at 22.20.

Man City points deductions 'across multiple seasons' floated as potential punishment in 115 FFP charges case – with relegation to Championship alone deemed insufficient by Premier League rivals

Manchester City being docked points 'across multiple seasons' has been proposed as a potential punishment in their 115 FFP charges case.

Man City hit with 115 FFP chargesRival teams want big punishment if found guiltyPoints deductions floated 'across multiple seasons'Getty/GOALWHAT HAPPENED?

Ahead of Manchester City's court battle with the Premier League for allegedly breaching financial rules beginning on Monday, The Telegraph claims top-flight sides feel a single points deduction would be insufficient punishment if they are found guilty. Even if that points deduction were to lead to relegation to the Championship it would reportedly be deemed as not enough, with one 'senior figure' in football proposing points being docked across multiple campaigns to stop them from challenging for trophies and rising straight back into the top-flight.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This case has been branded as City's 'Trial of the Century', with the hearing expected to last 10 weeks. The Cityzens were initially charged by the Premier League back in February 2023 but their alleged offences cover a period between 2009-18. In that time they won a host of Premier League crowns and other domestic trophies; so this case may throw their legacy into question. If they were relegated, stripped of titles, or not punished at all, it would send shockwaves around the footballing world.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Telegraph claims the independent commission that is sitting in judgement on the case has no power to relegate City from the Premier League because it has no jurisdiction over the English Football League or National League. If City were found guilty and subsequently expelled from the Premier League, they would have to apply to enter the EFL – who would be under no obligation to make them a member.

Afridi to return to Pakistan from LPL for 'personal emergency'

The former Pakistan captain said he would rejoin the LPL once his situation was resolved

Andrew Fidel Fernando02-Dec-2020A little over a week after he arrived in Sri Lanka to play in the Lanka Premier League, Shahid Afridi will leave to attend to a “personal emergency” in Pakistan. Afridi did not give details on how long he would be away for, but he did say he would return to his Galle Gladiators franchise “after the situation is handled”.Elsewhere at the LPL, fast bowler Aftab Alam has also returned to Afghanistan for personal reasons. If Afridi does come back, he may have to undergo a brief quarantine upon his return, but the tournament’s medical staff are unlikely to impose the seven-day quarantine they had on other players, as Afridi has proven he has already had Covid-19, and as such, is unlikely to contract or transmit the disease. He had initially arrived in Sri Lanka on November 24, but was allowed to take the field and play on November 27, after a test showed he had antibodies for Covid-19.His exit, though, leaves his team without its captain, after a poor start to the LPL. Gladiators are the only side in the tournament yet to record a victory. Vice-captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa is most likely to take the reins from Afridi.Alam’s exit will hurt his franchise – Dambulla Viiking – as well, with Alam having performed creditably on his only outing for Viiking, on Monday. The Viiking team has won two of their three matches so far, however. The LPL runs until December 16.

Man Utd's backup plan for Carlos Baleba revealed as Ruben Amorim eyes £50m reunion with Sporting CP midfielder who has Arsenal tattoo

Manchester United are reportedly lining up a shock move for Sporting CP's powerhouse captain Morten Hjulmand after their pursuit of Brighton's Carlos Baleba hit a wall, with the Seagulls demanding a jaw-dropping £120 million for their Cameroonian star. THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Brighton's firm stance has forced United to shift their focus to Hjulmand. United are preparing a £50m bid, with Sporting likely to consider an offer about £10m shy of his £68m release clause if performance add-ons are met. The Dane is no stranger to Amorim’s high-intensity, structured style, having played 65 matches under him at Sporting. Together, they lifted two Primeira Liga titles and a Taca de Portugal, with Hjulmand wearing the captain’s armband.

Legspinner Wil Parker opts for cricket over football with Victoria contract

The 18-year-old took four wickets on his first-class debut at the SCG last season

Andrew McGlashan24-Jun-2020Wil Parker, the 18-year-old legspinner, has opted for a professional cricket career over Australian Rules Football by signing a full contract with Victoria for the 2020-21 season.Parker made his first-class debut late last summer and impressed in his first outing at the SCG where he claimed four wickets to help Victoria to victory. He is also a talented footballer, who was tipped as a top-20 pick in the AFL draft and had earned interest from some clubs, so he had a decision to make as to which sport he would pursue at the professional level. The lack of football being played in age-group competitions due to Covid-19, which left Parker unable to showcase his ability, was a big part in the process.ALSO READ: Wil Parker dreams of meeting Shane Warne after ‘special’ debut“It was a very hard decision, one I weighed up for a long time, I love both sports,” Parker said. “I had to choose one eventually. Especially in these circumstances with Covid-19 I couldn’t pass it up. There’s been no footy on so it didn’t give me the chance to see where I’m at and how good I am. Having the experience last year in cricket it gave me a good idea that I’m a chance to make it in cricket rather than hedge by bets in footy.”If I’d had the chance to play footy I could have been in a totally difference position at the moment, I could have had a great season and made the draft, but in the current circumstances I didn’t feel confident going for the draft and had the opportunity for cricket.”Parker began as a medium-pacer before a back injury forced him to turn to spin – “I took up legspin for fun and it came out alright,” he said – and he has been mentored by former Australia legspinner Jim Higgs in club cricket.”Wil is a talented athlete and we’re excited he’s chosen to pursue cricket,” Cricket Victoria’s general manager of cricket Shaun Graf said. “He gave us a glimpse of what he’s got to offer in his two Shield games last season, we believe he’s got the skill and temperament to succeed in what is a difficult cricketing artform. His initial experiences last season will hopefully give him some added confidence moving forward in his career.”Elsewhere on Victoria’s contract list their pace-bowling resources have taken a hit with Chris Tremain moving to New South Wales which follows the departure of Peter Siddle to Tasmania. Andrew Fekete has also retired meaning a lot will be on the shoulders of Scott Boland, Will Sutherland and James Pattinson when the latter is not on Australia duty.”‘[Chris] had a taste of first-class cricket in New South Wales but he really established himself as one of the leading fast bowlers in Shield cricket with us over the last few years,” Graf said.”That form has seen him go very close to Australian Test selection on a number of occasions, hopefully he achieves that ambition one day. He has been a consistent performer and a good team person to have around our group during the several seasons he was with us.”While we’re disappointed to see him go, it was a contract that gave him long term security while fulfilling a desire to return home to NSW to be closer to his family.”Aaron Ayre, Jackson Coleman, Jake Reed, Eamonn Vines were also not offered contracts for the next season. Solskjaer allowed Man Utd’s dream Casemiro replacement to leave for £0

Manchester United’s season has been nothing short of a mess, which can be highlighted by the fact that Erik ten Hag’s future is now uncertain.

However, that’s also the case for plenty of the Red Devils players, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe now looking to recruit young, value-for-money talents.

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

A new midfielder is at the top of the new owner's priority list, with that particular position being highlighted as a problem in recent weeks.

That's notably been the case when former Real Madrid star Casemiro has taken to the field.

Casemiro’s 23/24 campaign

Last season, Casemiro filled the defensive midfield void that had been holding Man United back for years, playing 51 matches across all competitions.

But the £70m fee spent on the Brazilian is now looking like a rather huge blunder, with the veteran's performances ringing alarm bells this season, especially since he’s returned from injury in January.

Casemiro

The midfielder has two major flaws to his game that simply can’t be looked past, with the first being the lack of control he brings to the side, as shown by his pass accuracy of 82% in the league this season.

Yet the biggest problem is his pure lack of athleticism and the fact he can’t cover ground, with pundit Jamie Redknapp even stating that “Casemiro looks like he’s playing in Soccer Aid.”

Man Utd line up £60m transfer who's an "enormous" upgrade on Antony

The Manchester United target has six more goals than Antony in the league this season.

ByTom Lever Apr 17, 2024 Angel Gomes could’ve fixed Man Utd’s midfield

In 2020, Man United academy graduate Angel Gomes left his boyhood club in search of minutes, which has certainly worked out for the player but not the club.

The Englishman joined French side Lille having left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer behind, signing on a free transfer after rejecting a new contract offer at Old Trafford. He was then loaned out to Boavista in Portugal.

Fast forward to today, and the former United “wonderkid,” as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, is a key player at the heart of the Ligue 1 team's midfield, performing to an extremely high standard.

The 23-year-old is a versatile player who can play as an attacking midfielder, a box-to-box player, or even a defensive-minded midfielder in a double pivot, which is the exact profile that United need right now.

However, as you can see by the table above, he’s the type of player to bring security to the side in terms of possession retention rather than defensive actions, unlike Casemiro, whose style of play is the complete opposite.

Despite being just 5 foot 6, Gomes uses his small stature to his advantage, wriggling out of tight spaces and resisting the press with ease, which allows his side to be strong in the buildup phase.

That said, the number 8’s biggest strength is his ability to use his excellent vision to showcase his vast passing range, which also enables him to flourish creatively.

Gomes ranks in the top 1% for assists compared to midfielders in Ligue 1, registering six assists across 25 matches, but that tally could’ve been higher considering he’s created ten big chances.

Today, Gomes is estimated to be worth £26m by CIES Football Observatory, which just further highlights the massive mistake United made by not giving Gomes an opportunity to thrive.

Funnily enough, the Lille star ticks every single box that Ratcliffe would look for in a new midfield signing, in terms of cost, age, and potential.

Here is a detailed look at Portugal’s top goalscorers:

10 Joao Pinto 23 goals (81 caps)

Physical striker Joao Pinto represented Portugal at Euro 1996, Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, winning 81 caps across an 11-year international career.

Pinto was also known for his aggression and bad tackles as well as his goalscoring, picking up a number of red cards during his career. In fact, he famously hit Argentine referee Angel Sanchez in the 2002 World Cup after he was shown a red card, receiving a six-month suspension as a result.

9 Nani 24 goals (112 caps)

Well-known by Manchester United supporters for his nine-year stint at Old Trafford, Nani actually made his debut for Portugal 12 months before his move to England.

The tricky winger provided 24 assists in his 112 caps alongside his 24 goals, and turned out in five major tournaments for his country. The last was the most memorable, though, with Nani captaining Portugal to Euro 2016 glory after Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off injured in the final against France.

8 Bruno Fernandes 25 goals (78 caps)

If there’s one player who could step up as Portugal’s talisman once Cristiano Ronaldo retires, it could well be Bruno Fernandes.

The Manchester United captain has surged into the top 10 of Portugal goalscorers over the past year, reaching a quarter-century during their most recent Nations League campaign.

A previous Nations League winner with his country, Fernandes may well have the likes of Luis Figo in his sights before he hangs up his international boots.

7 Rui Costa 26 goals (94 caps)

Rui Costa may have been an attacking midfielder, but still racked up an impressive 26 goals for Portugal in 94 games. Compare this to his club record – 66 goals in 498 appearances – and it shows that Costa was more prolific on the international stage.

The creative Costa made his debut in 1993 and retired in 2004, with his last game for Portugal ending in Euro 2004 heartbreak in the final against Greece.

6 Helder Postiga 27 goals (71 caps)

Helder Postiga scored one of his 27 Portugal goals against England in Euro 2004, with his late equaliser helping his country advance via a penalty shootout.

The former FC Porto and Tottenham striker played in five major tournaments for Portugal and scored in three successive European Championships before retiring in 2014 after a group-stage exit at the World Cup.

5 Nuno Gomes 29 goals (79 caps)

Striker Nuno Gomes, best known for his time at club level with Benfica, made his first Portugal appearance in 1996 and last in 2011, with the forward hitting his prime in 2001 with nine goals in as many games.

His first Portugal goals didn’t come until 2000 when he starred at the European Championships, and he even scored four times in one game against Andorra.

4 Luis Figo 32 goals (127 caps)

Hugely successful at club level with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter, iconic winger Luis Figo never won a major tournament with Portugal, where he made appearances in 16 successive years between 1991 and 2006.

The former captain got so close in 2004, but suffered defeat in the Euros final to Greece and retired after the tournament. However, he reversed that decision and represented his country at the 2006 World Cup. As well as being Portugal’s fourth-highest scorer, Figo also sits fourth for caps behind Pepe, Joao Moutinho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

3 Eusebio 41 goals (64 caps)

A Benfica icon, Eusebio is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and was nicknamed “O Rei” (“The King”), turning out for Portugal between 1961 and 1973.

He won the Golden Boot at the 1966 World Cup with nine goals and scored 12 of his 41 goals in the same year. Eusebio also won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and retired from international football at the age of 31.

2 Pauleta 47 goals (88 caps)

Prior to Ronaldo’s dominance, Pauleta was the main man for Portugal in front of goal and was even named captain of the national side for a brief period in 2004.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker led the attack at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, and after also being included in the 2006 World Cup squad, announced his retirement after a fourth-place finish in Germany.

1 Cristiano Ronaldo 136 goals (219 caps)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stats for his country are truly remarkable, scoring an incredible 136 goals in 219 appearances. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid legend is still going strong for his country in his 40s while playing his club football for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

After making his international debut as a teenager way back in 2003, Ronaldo has got better with age, hitting double figures for goals in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has won the European Championship and the Nations League with his country.
