da brwin： Newcastle United have been something of a mixed bag this season. Even in victory against Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, the hosts left something to be desired after winning 2-0 and rising to nine points from four outings.

Nick Woltemade has been a revelation since completing his club-record £69m transfer from Stuttgart at the end of August, but he is not the prime version of Alexander Isak in black and white stripes. And the German goalscorer can’t do it all alone. Anthony Gordon is still struggling and found his issues exacerbated on Wednesday, pulled off with another suspected hip injury after a showing that left plenty to be desired.

Why Newcastle are so inconsistent

Newcastle have been consistent in their inconsistency this season, and that’s a problem. Gordon is a case in point, but also the £55m right winger Anthony Elanga, who has blanked across 16 matches since his summer switch from Nottingham Forest.

Howe would have hoped the Sweden international (and Gordon) would have established firmer channels down the flanks, and their struggles in this regard have run counter to Howe’s tactical vision and its implementation.

Joelinton’s drop-off has been accentuated against the efforts of Bruno Guimaraes and, particularly, Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park. So elegant and effective are the robust pair, with the 29-year-old Brazilian lagging behind after years of robust service.

Change is necessary, and while players like Joelinton have been invaluable parts of this sustained period of progress, they are not indispensable and it is probable that a move for a new high-profile centre-midfielder will be explored in 2026.

In spite of Tonali’s emergence as one of the best deep-lying midfielders in the league, United seem to have a problem effectively passing the ball at the moment.

Howe’s Newcastle system is one of the most progressive in the Premier League, with transitional play at the forefront, but more is needed, and the solution might be to drop a fan favourite who’s reached legend status this year.

Newcastle won against Athletic Bilbao, and opening the scoring was Big Dan Burn, as he has been affectionately nicknamed by the Toon supporters.

Club legend? The 6 foot 7 defender has certainly endeared himself to his boyhood club since joining from Brighton in January 2022, featuring prominently under Howe’s wing and scoring the first goal in United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley last year to lift the Carabao Cup.

But has he scored a goal more impressive in isolation than in the Champions League this week? Header of the Season, no doubt. In fact, the 33-year-old’s second goal in Europe’s premium club competition means he has edged ahead of Isak in the all-time scoring charts. A rather facetious statistic, but one lapped up by the fanbase all the same.

Of course, while Burn is one of the staple stars of the Howe era, we cannot turn away from the negative noise around his role and performances in recent weeks.

Frankly, the more laboured and sedate style of a team like Bilbao opens the door for Burn to show off his strongest qualities. He excelled, and remains a trusty member of Howe’s squad, having been among the first to be signed after the manager’s appointment nearly four years ago.

But Lewis Hall is far more dynamic as a full-back, and his cameo against the Spaniards suggests Howe might be wise to drop Burn as soon as the younger man recovers his full match fitness.

For all the concerns over Newcastle’s passing, they indeed stand as one of the most forward-thinking distributors in the Premier League. Statistics can be misleading, though, and that does not translate to fluent and sharp transitional play.

That is the objective, and Hall could be a strong proponent in enacting the right tactical change on Tyneside. Content creator Geordie Josh hailed the 21-year-old as a “generational left-back in the making” after his promising injury return, and we have all seen in the past his prowess on the ball and in defending on the wing of the backline.

After all, the former Chelsea prospect ranks among the top 16% of full-backs across Europe over the past year for passes attempted and progressive passes, as well as the top 9% for tackles won per 90 (data via FBref).

Burn, awarded a 9/10 match rating from the Chronicle Live against La Liga opponents, not only scoring an emphatic header but setting the standards with a steely, composed defensive display.

But he’s slow and less multi-faceted than a rising star such as Hall, who could become a nailed-down starter in the coming weeks as he builds his fitness up.

While Big Dan Burn will continue to be a dependable, industrious and beloved part of Howe’s Magpies side, he cannot start every game going forward; he is not progressive enough to propel the system back into full throttle.

Hall, however, has the perfect style to dovetail back in and make things tick.

The Detroit Tigers' mascot Paws tried to do his part to distract Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes as he was dealing on the bump at Comerica Park on Thursday. He threw six innings and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts, but will record yet another no decision after the Tigers tied the game after Skenes's exit.

The Pirates ace had it going though, amidst a clever, yet audacious distraction attempt from Paws behind home plate. Skenes makes up one half of debatably the most notable couple across sports with his girlfriend, former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne.

As Skenes toed the rubber Thursday, Paws held a big sign that said "sup Livvy Dunne" adorned with hearts to try and get in the NL Cy Young favorite's head. A bold and pretty hilarious attempt. It turned out to be just a failed attempt as Skenes set Tigers' batters down on strikes left and right, giving up two earned runs in his six-inning outing.

Dunne quickly took notice and posted the perfect response to the Tigers' mascot.

"Sorry… not my type of tiger," the LSU alum wrote on her X account.

Skenes and Dunne recently made the trip to Omaha to cheer on their LSU Tigers in the men's College World Series. LSU is set to meet Coastal Carolina in the championship final round, which is a best-of-three series and begins Saturday.

Pep eyeing long-term additions to his defence

Pep Guardiola has made it clear he is a huge admirer of Matheus Nunes this season, saying: “He can be an incredible right-back,”

“Matheus is a holding midfielder with incredible physicality and as much as he is focused, he can become one of the best [right-backs].

“He has special attributions to play in the sides, and in the last two or three games he has played unbelievable.”

Nunes has remained a key player for Man City in recent weeks, starting the last three games, with Abdukhodir Khusanov also capable of slotting in at right-back, doing so in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen back in November, while also impressing against Arsenal.

Despite Pep being blessed with a number of options in defence, the City boss remains keen on making long-term additions to his backline, according to a new report from TEAMtalk, which states he views Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento as the complete package.

The Blues have now moved into pole position in the race for Livramento’s signature, despite interest from a number of Premier League clubs, and they are ready to make a bid of more than £65m, which could include add-ons, while summer signing James Trafford may also be used as part of a swap deal.

David Warner has vowed to go back to the future on the eve of his 100th Test as he strives to end his lean three-year run in Test cricket ahead of a massive 12 months for Australia’s Test team.Warner’s milestone has given him pause to reflect on what has got him to this point and what has made him the player he is. He is just 78 runs shy of 8000 Test runs, and only four openers in history have scored more than his 24 Test centuries. Yet he has not passed three figures in Test cricket since January 2020.But with his milestone match just two days away, he has vowed to play like the Warner of old as he searches for that elusive Test century.”I know when I’m at my best, I’m taking the bowlers on,” he said on Saturday. “It goes well and it flows with the team and the guy at the other end. Now I’ve probably gone a bit more responsible and trying to put the team into a good position without playing a bit rash.”If anything I can probably be a bit more aggressive and go back to the older me, take them on a little bit more. But I think that also is dictated from what wickets you are getting.”You don’t want to have a dig at the curators, but the last two years our wickets have been green. If I go out there play a cover drive and nick one, you guys [the media] will have a feeding frenzy.”But now I’m in good positions and I’m nicking off, that’s the nature of the beast. This might be a wicket where I can go out and play like the old me. So you have to adapt to those conditions that’s what I’ve been doing the last 18 months.”Warner’s assertion that he has been more circumspect is evident in his strike-rate over the last three years. It has dipped to 57.21 compared to his staggering career rate of 71.18. Even more concerning though is the runs. In his last 15 Tests and 27 innings he has averaged just 26.07 with only four half-centuries. His numbers are even leaner in 2022. He has not scored a half-century in his last 10 Test innings.Warner’s claim that he needs to be more aggressive doesn’t quite stack up against some of his dismissals in the West Indies series where he was out driving aggressively away from his body in three of his four innings. But he claims he has been out of luck rather than out of form from either a technical or decision-making standpoint.”You look at some of the chop-ons and I’ve been in great positions when I’ve been nicked off,” Warner said. “So there’s nothing you can actually do about that. That’s what happens in the game of cricket, it ebbs and flows.”People [were] writing me off in that one-day game here [against England] and I went out and scored a hundred on a pretty dicey wicket.”It is about making runs. You’re never out of form. They’re not the words that I use and they’re definitely not used in our change rooms. It’s about [being] out of runs.
