Liverpool ready to pay £60m+ for 18-goal star with same agent as Van Dijk

Liverpool are likely going to be Premier League champions this season and Arne Slot has already commenced building the foundations for exciting reinforcements to arrive at Anfield in the summer.

Liverpool look to maximise appeal in the summer window

Put bluntly, there will never be a better time for players to join Liverpool as they close in their a second title of the Premier League era. Fans had to watch from afar when the Reds claimed the crown in 2020/21, but there will be no such problems come May.

Arne Slot has taken the acclaim of a support that have witnessed their rejuvenated side race into an almost unassailable lead at the summit, though the Dutchman won’t want to stop there as he aims to build a legacy on Merseyside.

Making a start on summer targets, Liverpool are eyeing an ambitious £100 million bid for Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo should Mohamed Salah complete a dramatic departure.

The Egypt international has still yet to pen new terms alongside Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, potentially creating an unwanted scenario where high-profile replacements need to be identified as contingencies should the trio move on.

With Andy Robertson not getting any younger, the Reds have Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez high on their wishlist despite Real Madrid’s reported interest in the Hungary international. Getting one over the Champions League heavyweights would likely send out a signal that Liverpool are serious about being England’s dominant force for time to come.

Maximising appeal has to be the focus for Slot and company. Setting the bar high, the former Feyenoord boss is now ready to pay a premium to land one of Europe’s most exciting forwards once the window opens.

Liverpool ready to pay £60m+ for Atalanta's Ademola Lookman

Per a report in Spain, Liverpool are ready to strike for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman and have intentions of offering up to €75m (£63.1m) to secure a deal for the flamboyant winger.

Born in London, the 28-year-old represents Nigeria at international level and has registered 18 goals and seven assists in 32 appearances this campaign in all competitions.

Labelled “exceptional” by former Nigeria goalkeeper Idah Peterside, Lookman is believed to hold strained relations with Gian Piero Gasperini due to his recent comments on the former Everton winger’s missed penalty for Atalanta against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

The backlash from his boss has emboldened the player to seek a new challenge this summer, alerting Liverpool alongside divisional rivals Chelsea, who are also willing to commit to a sizeable prospective transfer.

Intriguingly, Lookman and Reds stalwart Van Dijk are both members of the ROOF agency, something that could ease the process of future negotiations.

Fighting off competition for the man in question has to be a priority for Slot. Nevertheless, few would argue they are at a disadvantage given Champions League qualification is guaranteed for 2025/26.

Sheffield Utd must rue losing star who's now worth more than Hamer

The EFL announced the shortlists for their end-of-season awards earlier this week, and Sheffield United have one of their stars in the running for the Player of the Year award.

Dutch attacking midfielder Gustavo Hamer is one of three players up for the Player of the Year trophy, alongside Burnley’s James Trafford and Leeds United’s Dan James.

The former Coventry City star’s performances for the Blades this season have contributed to him being the most valuable player in the current squad.

Gustavo Hamer's current market value

At the time of writing (18/04/2025), as per Transfermarkt, Hamer is currently valued at £12.8m, which makes him the most valuable player at Bramall Lane, which seems fair when you consider that he is in contention to be named the best player in the Championship.

The 27-year-old dynamo has proven his worth to Chris Wilder’s team by providing quality as both a scorer and a creator at the top end of the pitch from a wide or central midfield position.

In the Championship so far this season, Hamer has scored eight goals from 4.68 xG and been rewarded with six assists from ten ‘big chances’ created, which shows that he has been clinical in front of goal and unfairly compensated as a creative force.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

There is a former Sheffield United player, however, who is currently worth even more than the Dutch wizard, having left the Blades fairly recently – Iliman Ndiaye.

Iliman Ndiaye's current market value

The club cashed in on the Senegal international in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £20m, selling him to Marseille, as they did not want to run the risk of him leaving on a free transfer in 2024.

Despite leaving Bramall Lane for a fee of up to £20m, Ndiaye’s market value on Transfermarkt has fluctuated over the last couple of seasons.

As you can see in the table above, the Senegalese forward’s Transfermarkt value has been up and down in recent seasons but is currently at the highest point it has been in his career at £18.8m.

This means that he is currently worth even more than Championship Player of the Year nominee Hamer, thanks to his performances for Everton in the Premier League this season.

Iliman Ndiaye scores for Everton

The 25-year-old attacker, who was once dubbed “unplayable” by Billy Sharp, has scored seven goals from 4.99 xG in 24 starts in the top-flight for the Toffees, helping them to push clear of the relegation battle this term.

Ndiaye has proven himself in the Premier League at Goodison Park, and Sheffield United must rue that they only got to enjoy his talents for 11 minutes in the division in the 2020/21 campaign, selling him to Marseille after their promotion in 2023.

Worth more than Ballard: Sheffield United have hit gold on "dominant" star

Hopefully, Hamer can make the step up and soar in value to be on par with Ndiaye, or even more valuable than him, if the Blades achieve promotion this season.

Inter Miami player ratings vs Palmeiras: Luis Suarez's goal and assist powers the Herons into the knockout rounds where star-studded match against PSG awaits

Inter Miami are off to the Round of 16 after settling for a draw against the Brazilian giants

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami booked their spot in the knockout round of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Monday night, drawing Brazilian giants Palmeiras 2-2 at Hard Rock Stadium in their Group Stage finale.

The Brazilian outfit finished first in the group, and Miami in second, as the two teams shared the spoils in a four-goal thriller of Group A action.

Miami opened the scoring in the first half through a blistering counterattack. Luis Suarez fed a sprinting Tadeo Allende, who, 1v1 with the goalkeeper, put the ball home to give the a 1-0 lead.

The Uruguayan forward then doubled Miami's lead himself, 20 minutes into the second half, scoring a stupendous effort to give them a 2-0 lead and what felt like a sure victory. However, the Serie A side didn't give up, and their grit and effort paid off as they secured two late goals to manage a point on the night. Midfielder Paulinho found the back of the net in the 80th minute, and 24-year-old Mauricio arrived off the bench to draw them level with two minutes to spare in regulation to make it 2-2.

Palmeiras, with momentum behind them, nearly scored a winner with the final kick of the game, but Paulinho's attempt at a brace was denied by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano bemoaned his club's missed opportunity to seal three points and a group stage top seed after going up 2-0. Still, he's proud of his team for advancing to the knockout stages after being considered an underdog in the tournament.

“Unfortunately, we had the game in our hands and it slipped away," he told DAZN after the match. "We couldn’t maintain the intensity until the final whistle against a team with real quality and depth. Overall, the squad showed they belong here. Before the tournament, we were practically the underdogs, but with discipline, fight – and above all, football – we overcame obstacles, grew as a team, and now we’re in the quarterfinals.”

With the result, both teams confirmed their spot in the Round of 16 in the tournament. Messi and will take on his former club and current reigning champions of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain, while Palmeiras will meet Brazilian rivals Botafogo in Philadelphia.

“This level of competition isn’t something we regularly encounter in our domestic league. We’ve shown we have no complexes. It’s been a huge learning experience, and we have rightfully earned the privilege to play the European champions," Mascherano said. "We’ll strive to match them, but at the end of the day, it’s still 11 against 11.”

Oscar Ustari (6/10):

Nothing he could do about either goal, but came up with a few big stops otherwise.

Marcelo Weigandt (5/10):

Not his best performance. Struggled going forward, and in 1v1 moments, often found himself under pressure because he took too long on the ball.

Tomas Aviles (6/10):

Handed a surprising start, the Argentine defender held his own throughout the match for the most part. A promising showing.

Maxi Falcon (6/10):

So strong and composed in intense moments. Aggressive off the ball, he led the back line all night until the final 10 minutes, when their entire defense capitulated.

Noah Allen (7/10):

Filled in for Jordi Alba admirably. Struggled to maintain Estevao at times, but worked hard and stuck at it.

Tadeo Allende (8/10):

Electric on the right flank. Took his goal brilliantly and timed his runs throughout the evening to near perfection.

Federico Redondo (6/10):

Largely ineffective outside of completing small, short passes in the center of the park. Didn't put a foot wrong, but didn't bring the forward progression Mascherano likely hoped for.

Sergio Busquets (6/10):

Solid centrally, but Palmeiras' quick press made for a few uncomfortable moments. Overall, consistent and reliable, but not at his best, either.

Telasco Segovia (7/10):

Lively in moments, but disappeared for chunks of the game, struggling to play off of Suarez in the attack. Some of his biggest moments, surprisingly, came defensively, as he helped keep the electric Estevao quiet.

Lionel Messi (6/10):

Sloppy yellow on the verge of halftime, that was lucky not to go to VAR. A strangely ineffective performance from the Argentine.

Luis Suarez (8/10):

Recorded an assist on Allende's opener, intentional or not, and then followed it up in the second half with a stellar goal.

Benjamin Cremaschi (N/A):

Brought on with 15 minutes to spare, helped the midfield lock in to earn the point.

Jordi Alba (6/10):

Solid defensive performance as he helped close out the match.

Baltasar Rodriguez (N/A):

Introduced with 13 minutes to spare.

Javier Mascherano (7/10):

Through to the knockout rounds, and that's all that matters. Palmeiras were brilliant all evening, and he executed a game plan that secured them a draw. A surge of late pressure tested their defense, but for 80 minutes, the Argentine manager played his cards brilliantly.

Angels’ David Fletcher Is Baseball’s Most Anonymous Talent

In the age of ever-increasing exit velocities and launch angles, David Fletcher stands out. The Angels’ second baseman ranks dead last in average exit velocity among qualified major-league hitters and has the second-lowest strikeout rate in the American League. He’s also second in the AL in hits and owns the longest hitting streak of the season, doing so with a quiet confidence his manager likens to Joe Namath’s.

On a team with three-time MVP Mike Trout, two-way phenomenon and 2021’s presumptive AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, and All-Star corner infielders Anthony Rendon and Jared Walsh, it’s the 5' 9" Fletcher who has paced the lineup from the leadoff spot for most of the year. (Recently, he and Ohtani have flipped spots, with Fletcher now batting second.) The soft-spoken 27-year-old is not one to draw attention to himself, but his play this season has been impossible to ignore, and his teammates are more than happy to do the talking for him.

“Fletch is a unique type of player. He knows how to play the game. His IQ in baseball is very high,” shortstop José Iglesias said earlier this month. As if that wasn’t enough, Iglesias said Fletcher’s savvy extends from the diamond to the card table. “He teaches me about poker as well. He’s a good poker player.”

And how does Fletcher describe himself?

“I just enjoy competing in everything,” Fletcher says. “And I hate losing.”

Gary A. Vasquez/USA TODAY Sports

That high-level baseball acumen and renowned stoicism are traits Fletcher displayed long before arriving in the big leagues in 2018. On a middling team that shares a market with the defending champion Dodgers, his cool demeanor and understated skillset make him an anonymous star and one baseball’s best-kept secrets.

5 Chelsea players and transfer targets who could be their new Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba’s legacy at Chelsea is the stuff of legend.

The Ivorian striker was the beating heart of the Blues’ golden era, a colossus who combined power, skill and an unparalleled ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most, most notably in the 2012 Champions League final, where his unforgettable performance helped the Blues lift the trophy for the first time.

A decade after his departure, Chelsea are still yearning for a successor capable of replicating his impact on and off the pitch.

The club has seen a revolving door of strikers in the post-Drogba era, and while some such as Diego Costa enjoyed solid careers at Stamford Bridge, no one has been able to fully step into the legendary striker’s shoes.

From young prodigies already making their mark in west London to established European stars, we look at five players we think have the potential to take up Drogba’s mantle at Stamford Bridge.

5 players Chelsea should sign in the summer

Chelsea have fallen off the pace in recent weeks, but a promising season could lead to greater things if they get their summer business right.

ByBarney Lane Feb 4, 2025 1 Nicolas Jackson Chelsea

Nicolas Jackson, who Chelsea signed from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, has plenty in common with Drogba. His physical presence and work rate mirror that of Drogba’s, while his ability to link up the play is perhaps even better than the Ivorian’s. He also has great pace and clever movement.

However, where he comes up short when compared to Drogba is his finishing. Though he’s far improved this term under Enzo Maresca, he still wastes too many big chances, often needing two or three clear opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet.

Since moving to Chelsea, Jackson has scored 23 Premier League goals, but also missed a whopping 39 big chances in his short Blues career so far – exactly triple the amount Drogba missed since this was recorded by the Premier League.

That being said, Jackson is still just 23 years old, and minus his hit-and-miss finishing, his impressive performances at his peak suggest he’s capable of leading the line at Stamford Bridge for years to come. However, consistency and improved displays in front of goal will determine if he reaches Drogba’s heights.

2 Shim Mheuka Chelsea

Shim Mheuka has rapidly ascended through Chelsea’s academy ranks since joining the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022.

During the 2023/24 season, he regularly featured for the Under-18s despite still being a schoolboy, netting an impressive 12 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions, including a memorable outing at Stamford Bridge in the Under-18 Premier League national final against Manchester United.

Mheuka also played a pivotal role for England in the European Under-17 Championship last summer, scoring in their opening match against Spain. More recently, he marked his first call-up to the Under-19s in style, scoring against France and the Netherlands.

Now 17, Mheuka’s powerful frame, intelligent movement, and superb finishing abilities – all qualities Drogba showcased – have already caught the attention of Maresca, with the Italian handing him his first-team debut in a 3-1 win over Astana in the Conference League back in December.

There is no doubting that he has a bright future in west London, and given Drogba was 26 when he signed for Chelsea, there is plenty of time for Mheuka to prove he has what it takes to grow into a Drogba-esque talent.

3 Liam Delap Ipswich Town

Liam Delap has been one of the Premier League’s best strikers this season. Big, strong and with a lethal eye for goal, the forward has scored 10 goals in the top flight for newly promoted Ipswich Town and has proven to be a real handful for some of the top flight’s best defenders.

The 9 best super subs in Premier League history

Who has made the greatest impact from the bench?

ByDominic Lund Dec 27, 2024

Already linked with a move to Chelsea, Maresca, who coached him as a youngster during his time in Manchester City’s youth ranks, is a big admirer.

“Liam is a fantastic player, and also for his age,” said Maresca back in December before Chelsea were beaten 2-0 by Ipswich, a game in which Delap scored the opening goal. “I think we spent one year together, and he scored 22 to 24 goals. He is a very good striker.

“England have many good players, many good strikers,” he added. “He’s working hard off the ball and on the ball, understands the game and can score goals. I think he can be an important player for England.” For Chelsea too, maybe?

4 Victor Osimhen Galatasaray/Napoli

Victor Osimhen is perhaps the closest current player to Drogba in terms of style and impact.

The Nigerian forward’s scoring record at Napoli is certainly reminiscent of Drogba, not to mention continuing his streak in front of goal in a Galatasaray shirt, which is something the Ivorian did himself in between his Chelsea spells.

Osimhen came close to joining Chelsea in the summer, but the deal fell through prior to his loan switch to Istanbul.

Whilst there, he has again shown why he’s one of the deadliest strikers in world football, scoring 20 goals in 27 games, including two against Tottenham in the Europa League, which would already make him something of a Chelsea hero to some.

5 Benjamin Sesko RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is one of Europe’s most exciting young strikers and has often been compared to Erling Haaland due to his physical attributes and playing style. Rather crucially, he has also been mentioned in the same breath as Chelsea star Drogba.

The Slovenian forward stands at 6 foot 4, making him a real handful for defenders when the ball is crossed into the box. Not only is he big, but he’s also a terrific header of the ball. Since moving to Leipzig in 2023, the 21-year-old has scored seven headed goals.

Drogba, meanwhile, found the net with his noggin 17 times for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Like Drogba, Sesko has the ability to score from long range, best showcased by his stunning strike against Werder Bremen in January, where he unleashed a powerful drive that nearly shattered the net from 25 yards out.

Reportedly already on Chelsea’s radar, a move to Stamford Bridge could give him the chance to develop into Chelsea’s next dominant striker, potentially following in Drogba’s footsteps.

James Fuller's four wickets help Hampshire to fifth win of campaign

Tom Moores 81 threatens chance of upset before five Notts wickets fall in 90 minutes

ECB Reporters Network21-Jul-2023Hampshire 166 (Gubbins 49, James 3-38, Hutton 3-40, Paterson 3-56) and 344 for 5 dec (Holland 138*, Dawson 82, Fuller 52*) beat Nottinghamshire 100 (Holland 4-19) and 294 (Moores 81, Clarke 67, Fuller 4-59) by 116 runsTom Moores flailed tired bowlers in the evening with 81, his first fifty of the season, to threaten just the chance of a remarkable upset but he became the first of five final men to fall in 90 minutes as Hampshire completed their fifth win this campaign by 116 runs.Challenged to make 411 in a theoretical maximum of 202 overs by their late declaration on Thursday, Nottinghamshire started the third day of the Trent Bridge LV= Insurance County Championship match with the neat equation before them of exactly 400 runs required and all ten men standing. In fact the more key early stat was supplied by the seamers: Mohammad Abbas struck with his third ball of the day, Kyle Abbott with his second and, after rain stole 13 overs, James Fuller with his fifth and eleventh balls of the match. Hampshire’s formidable pace pack sensed victory at 76 for 4.A stand of 99 slightly shifted the balance until Joe Clarke, twice missed, finally fell for 67 to Fuller, who finished with 4 for 59, and Moores, after adding 64 with Lyndon James, had his off stump clipped still 30 overs from the scheduled close. The home demise began in the morning’s second over when Ben Slater, in what has been a season of struggle, was unable to add to his overnight eight before a beauty from Abbas straightened to hit off stump. When Abbott arrived as first change and found the immediate lift to take the shoulder of Will Young’s bat and see the Kiwi lob to the ‘keeper for the same score, Nottinghamshire were 40 for 2.Rain arrived three balls later and, soon after the afternoon resumption, Clarke was reprieved on one at second slip off the same bowler before Fuller, the fifth seamer employed, ended Haseeb Hameed’s fluent 30 by having the acting captain held high at third slip from a defensive edge. He then disposed of South African Matt Montgomery for a ninth-ball duck.Born in Cape Town but raised in New Zealand, Fuller is one of four bowlers in Hampshire’s pace quintet who all learned their cricket abroad but it was the lone home-grown seamer, Keith Barker, who should have ended a fifth-wicket revival then worth 50.A top-edged cut from Clarke flashed between ‘keeper and slip, the latter only belatedly reacting, as a fortuitous boundary brought up Clarke’s fifty. Next over, another shower forced an early tea but no loss of time.It meant the last session stretched ahead for potentially 53.2 overs and ten of them had gone by the time Fuller, in a second spell, cut one back to remove Clarke’s middle stump for 67. Moores then accelerated until spin made its first Hampshire appearance of the match – and Liam Dawson, aghast, saw him dropped at the wicket from his twelfth ball.It was finally yet another seamer, the Australian-raised Ian Holland, who clipped his off stump, Moores’s 81 coming from 109 balls, before Abbas returned to bowl James, ending 20 overs at the crease for 21. When Brett Hutton edged behind for nine Fuller had secured his fourth success.Refusing runs to farm the strike, Calvin Harrison held out until the new ball was available – and immediately taken in bright sunshine at 6.25 with 13 overs left. But Toby Pettman, left two balls to face from the first of them, fended to short leg off the second. Harrison, last to go, was leg-before to Abbas for 39, 27 balls later.

The New Year’s Test returns to Cape Town after a four-year absence following the Covid-19 pandemic and South Africa playing in Australia over last year’s festive season. The Tests will be South Africa’s first since beating West Indies 2-0 at home in March this year, and the second of India’s WTC campaign, following their ongoing matches in the West Indies. The Tests will come at the end of a tour that will begin with three T20Is, and will also include three ODIs.The last time India travelled to South Africa to play Test cricket was in the previous WTC cycle, from late December 2021 to early January 2022. India won the first Test in Centurion by 113 runs, but lost the next two, in Johannesburg and in Cape Town, by identical margins of seven wickets. That, however, didn’t prevent India from making the WTC final, where they lost to Australia. South Africa, meanwhile, finished third on the table, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the final.South Africa’s big five venues – Kingsmead, St George’s Park, the Wanderers, SuperSport Park and Newlands – along with Paarl’s Boland Park will all get a taste of the action but there are no matches planned in the country’s central region, which includes Bloemfontein and Kimberley. Durban, where a significant proportion of the Indian diaspora in South Africa is based, will only host one match, the first T20I.”This is an important tour for both teams and I am really pleased that we will have a full tour comprising all three formats of the game,” Lawson Naidoo, CSA chair, said in a statement. “The tour also allows us to showcase the best of South Africa and we have spread out matches across the nation.””The Boxing Day Test and the New Year Test are amongst the most important fixtures on the international cricket calendar and the schedule has been planned particularly around these marquee dates,” Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, said. The India series will be the only men’s international cricket played in South Africa in the 2023-24 summer – South Africa host Australia for three T20Is and five ODIs in August-September – and will be followed immediately by the SA20. In mid-February, South Africa are due to travel to New Zealand for two Tests before a mid-year series in the Caribbean. South Africa will only play two-Test series for the duration of the 2023-2025 WTC cycle, with their next three Test series set for October 2026, when they host Australia.
