Lopetegui pressure mounting as West Ham consider January action

West Ham could hire Premier League legend to brilliantly replace Lopetegui

West Ham must replace Lopetegui with this Premier League legend

ByConnor Holden Nov 14, 2024

The 58-year-old has been under mounting pressure in the last few weeks, having overseen just three league wins so far, with reports suggesting that West Ham are sounding out replacements for Lopetegui already.

It is even believed that Lopetegui is frustrating crucial club figureheads with late U-turns over key decisions on matchdays, while talkSPORT reported recently that “several” senior players are not behind the West Ham boss.

Lopetegui hasn’t exactly been helped by the ongoing crisis over summer signing Niclas Fullkrug, who was brought in to end West Ham’s reliance on Michail Antonio and Danny Ings going forward.

The Germany international, who scored 16 goals in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund last season, has been sidelined with a niggling achilles tendon injury, which he picked up on international duty in September.

Niclas Fullkrug for West Ham

Lopetegui has urged West Ham to make January signings, with the club apparently considering that possibility. There are also reports that star players are growing frustrated, like winger Mohammed Kudus, and an update has come to light on his future this afternoon.

Kudus could be close to Saudi move with next few days "decisive"

According to reports out of Spain, the Ghana international has an offer from the Saudi Pro League, and these next few days could be “decisive” in determining his future at Rush Green.

It is believed Kudus could be “very close” to moving to Saudi Arabia, which would be a blow for Lopetegui amid the plethora of other issues he’s been forced to deal with lately.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

The “underrated” forward is one of West Ham’s most crucial forward players, having completed more successful take-ons per 90 than any other player in the squad (WhoScored), which has attracted rumoured interest from the likes of Liverpool as they search for a potential Mohammed Salah replacement.

It would be surprising if Kudus, who West Ham signed for just £38 million, does opt for a Saudi switch at this stage of his career, but as we’ve seen from the likes of Ruben Neves, we cannot entirely rule it out either.

Tom Latham rues the moments that got away as depleted New Zealand are put to the sword

Endgame proved out of their hands, but NZ skipper proud of team’s fight in tough contest

It may take some time for the shock to wear off, but when it does it may strike New Zealand how close they were to winning this Test – which, given the final make-up of their XI – might have counted among one of their most remarkable wins.A post-tea mishit to a fielder, a catch held earlier, and it is entirely possible that, of the two results all players thought possible at tea, New Zealand would’ve secured the right one for them.As it is, they were blitzed by Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes. But it’s worth remembering they were without Kane Williamson, they were without Kyle Jamieson in the second innings, that their spinning option Michael Bracewell was on debut and that Tim Southee was not having a good Test. They were effectively defending 299 with two bowlers and, even if one of them happens to be the indefatigable Trent Boult, that takes some doing. Hindsight is a tricky thing but from very early on in this Test, the omission of Neil Wagner was not looking like a wise move. They still thought it should be enough. “We certainly believed it was,” Tom Latham said. “You have to have some belief when you get into a final innings. The way we started with the ball was outstanding and we were able to make those breakthroughs. At lunch they were three-down, and then we had a bit of momentum going into tea as well. If we were able to get a couple of breakthroughs after that, we’d get into the bowlers but we weren’t able to do that today.”Much of the focus will fall on that mad half-hour just after tea. New Zealand decided to go at Bairstow and Stokes with bouncers and men on the leg-side boundary – a tactic Wagner would have been ideal for.Bairstow tore through that tactic, raining sixes over the short square-leg boundary; in four overs after tea, England put on 59. There were still over a hundred runs to get but by the time New Zealand moved on, the game felt like it had shifted decisively.”We tried a few different things,” Latham said. “But unfortunately, whatever we tried, they were able to negate that. Sometimes when the guys play special innings like that you just have to take your hat off to them. They played fantastically well.”When someone is going like that you need some protection [on the boundary]. With the nature of the ground, a little bit smaller and a really high scoring rate, it was about the balance of having some guys in but also having protection on the boundaries. Some other days he might have hit one straight to one of the guys. Today was Jonny’s day and he played really well.”Related

Jonny Bairstow on stunning England run-chase: 'It was do or die, so you've got to do'

Some of the control of the game had been ceded on the fourth day when New Zealand gifted a spate of wickets to England to end the day seven-down, with three wickets left. There were two run-outs and each of the wickets, to a certain degree, came from batting error. Not only did that lower their ambitions for a fourth-innings target, it left plenty of time in the game – though time became a moot consideration ultimately, given England that won with more than 20 overs of the game left unused.”Yeah, I guess you could look at a few different moments throughout the Test,” Latham said. “I guess you’d want to do a few things different. But, as I said heading into today, 300 on the board and with the breakthroughs we made in the morning, we firmly felt we’d have a good chance. We weren’t able to make the next couple of breakthroughs we needed into that middle and lower order. But it was a great Test to be part of.”The nature of England’s chase, and that it had been so clearly signalled through the Test, makes all of this redundant, however. The first four days could have developed in any number of ways, but the manner in which it ended was, as Latham acknowledged, out of their hands.”Obviously the way Jonny and Ben played took the game away from us. I guess after tea, two results were in play, we were confident we could get a couple of wickets and then you’re into the bowlers. But sometimes you have to take your hat off to the way guys played. And I think we have to do that today. Jonny, the clean hitting, the power-hitting he showed to take the game away from us was not ideal from our point of view. Full credit to them.”

Markram makes the most of tour game as South Africans lose to England Lions

Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton put in strong showings ahead of the first Test at Lord’s on August 17

Not so long ago, there were doubts over Aiden Markram’s place in the South African Test XI. His struggles – largely as opener – had become so profound that a batter once tipped to be the next big thing spent large portions of the last 12 months averaging about 10 runs an innings.South Africa were unwilling to let one of their prized assets go by like that. So the coach Mark Boucher decided to push him down the order. T20 cricket proved that the experiment was worthwhile – to the point that the player is confident of his place in the upcoming World Cup. And now, batting at No. 4 in four-day cricket, Markram made the highest score out of the South African line-up in the tour game against England Lions in Canterbury. He came in to bat with his team 20 for 2 in the fifth over, trailing by 253 runs, and made and unbeaten 88 off 169 balls. It wasn’t enough to ward off defeat but it does put the team in better stead going into the first Test at Lord’s on August 17.The England Lions’ performance mirrored the senior side under Brendon McCullum as they piled up a first-innings total of 672 at nearly a run a ball. And as pleasing as that must be, Craig Overton picking up a five-wicket haul in the first innings and the returning Ollie Robinson finishing with 3 for 29 in 11 overs in the second innings will be significant as well. Both players may well be fighting for the third seamer’s spot in the Test XI – currently held by the English summer’s biggest find Matthew Potts.South Africa may yet be happy with their work in the warm-up game. Their lower-middle order bailed them out from a position of considerable strife, taking the score from 129 for 5 in the first innings up to 433 with Khaya Zondo (86) Rassie van der Dussen (75), Kyle Verreynne (62) and Marco Jansen (54) contributing heavily.Their collapse in the second innings does raise a concern about the top order though. They were five-down for 100-odd again only this time there was no counterattack. Markram, who had earlier picked up a six-for with his offbreaks, found a way to survive but the rest crumbled; bowled out for 183. Robinson picked off three of the top five while 23-year old Derbyshire seamer Sam Conners ran through the tail, finishing with a four-for of his own.

"Underrated" £90k-per-week West Ham star growing frustrated and wants out

da dobrowin: An “underrated” £90,000-per-week West Ham United player is growing frustrated and wants out of the London Stadium, according to a report this week, with manager Julen Lopetegui at risk of losing him soon.

West Ham players who could leave in 2025

da bet7: A quartet of senior squad members in Michail Antonio, Danny Ings, Vladimir Coufal, Aaron Cresswell and Lukasz Fabianski are all out of contract next summer as things stand, so Tim Steidten will have to agree extension deals or let them depart for free.

Saudi side make £83 million out-of-window offer to sign West Ham star

The Middle East has emerged as a potential destination for him.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 26, 2024

Antonio and Ings are part of an aging strike force, with Lopetegui pushing the West Ham hierarchy to sign a striker in January amid concerns over a lack of options. Long-serving shot-stopper Fabianski is now 39-years-old and in the twilight phase of his career, and the same can be said for Cresswell, who’s been at the club for over a decade.

Vladimir Coufal will go down as a fan favourite and key player during the 2020/2021 season under David Moyes, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s arrival in the summer has negated the need for him to remain at Rush Green for much longer.

Bizarrely, summer signing Niclas Fullkrug has already been tipped to leave West Ham, with an achilles tendon injury blighting his career at the club so far. The 31-year-old’s overall fitness record has been looked into, and it doesn’t make for pretty reading, which has prompted some to question why they struck a deal with Borussia Dortmund in the first place.

He had a few issues during his time in Germany with his fitness,” said former recruitment chief Mick Brown to Football Insider.

“That, I’ve heard, played a part in the reason Dortmund were keen to let him go. So if that was an issue, and it was known in Germany, you’ve got to ask serious questions about why it was overlooked by West Ham.

“Paying almost £30million for a 31-year-old is always risky, but spending that money on a player with fitness issues at that age is a huge problem.”

A much bigger blow than losing Fullkrug would be having to part company with forward Mohammed Kudus, who is reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Barcelona and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Kudus growing frustrated at West Ham and taking action to leave

According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool are firmly among the growing list of suitors for him. They add that Kudus is growing increasingly frustrated at West Ham, and has told his agents to explore a possible move to Merseyside. The Ghana international, called “underrated” by some, has stood out as one of Lopetegui’s key attacking players so far this season.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

If West Ham’s disappointing start to the season continues, there is every reason reports of this nature could begin to hold weight behind them. The 24-year-old, on a reported £90,000-per-week, was rumoured to have an £85 million release clause in the summer – but it has now expired.
