Spurs struck gold selling "piano" who’d be worth more than Maddison in 2024

da leao: Losing James Maddison to injury for the final stretch of the campaign could be detrimental to Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of returning to the Champions League – the England international is that influential.

da brdice: Look at the bleak period throughout November and December, when injuries to Maddison and fellow summer signing Micky van de Ven sent Spurs' season into a spin, with last season's struggles fixed through Ange Postecoglou's appointment and the shrewd recruitment since.

Suffering another issue against Aston Villa earlier in March, Van de Ven missed out last weekend as Tottenham got thumped 3-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage, underscoring the Dutchman's significance within Postecoglou's entertaining system.

Maddison is just as important, if not more so, and he is indeed the lynchpin for success, vital in bringing Spurs back to that coveted spot in Europe's elite club competition.

James Maddison's season in numbers

When the screech of the final whistle solemnly sounded throughout the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in November, with Chelsea 4-1 victors after Spurs suffered two red cards and saw Maddison and Van de Ven trudge off injured, it did seem to be a portent of issues to come.

And it was. Maddison had won the Premier League's Player of the Month award back in August and had been described as one of "the buys of the summer" by The Times' Henry Winter, so sublime was the 27-year-old in his playmaking, commitment, command.

He returned to action in January after a couple of months on the sidelines and while he's not quite returned to those pre-injury levels, the £170k-per-week ace remains the chief creator in Postecoglou's system, also the joint-most valuable centre-midfielder in the squad at £43m (with Pape Sarr), according to CIES Football Observatory's player valuation model.

Remarkably, there's a former Spurs star who was worth just short of double this amount way back when, and that man's Michael Carrick.

How much Spurs could've sold Michael Carrick for in 2024

According to Totally Money, a site specialising in working out how past transfer fees would look in the modern market, Carrick would have been sold for quite the sum if he played today.

The 42-year-old, now manager of Middlesbrough in the Championship, completed 75 appearances for the Lilywhites before completing a £19m move to Manchester United back in July 2006, where he would go on to win a wealth of major honours and retire as one of England's most decorated players.

This was a sizeable sum back in the day, sure, but Totally Money have arrived at the conclusion that the Red Devils legend would have commanded an incredible £84m fee if United had pounced in the same circumstances, just some 18 years in the future.

Manchester United Michael Carrick

Quirkily described as a "piano" by his former teammate Gary Neville for his elegance and deftness alongside some heavy-metal peers, Carrick at his peak would walk into Postecoglou's side and would surely rival Maddison in his effectiveness and influence, albeit in a different regard.

Ultimately, Carrick's transfer value is probably a fair reflection, if seeming somewhat exorbitant at a glance. He was an incredible player and underrated inside the Manchester United system, endowed with a brilliant ball-playing ability.

£15m Spurs hero would be worth more than Maddison if he was sold in 2024

A top talent at Tottenham way back when, this world-class midfielder would eclipse Maddison’s value.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 21, 2024

Maddison's £43m market value as claimed by CIES is probably not a wholly fair figure, should Spurs be inclined to sell in the future, but he would be unlikely to arrive at Carrick's projected value.

Sheffield United in pole position with deal agreed for "outstanding" 22 y/o

da realsbet: Sheffield United are now closing in on one of the biggest signings of the January transfer window so far, according to an update from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Latest Sheffield United news

da esoccer bet: The Blades face another hugely important Championship game this weekend, as they welcome Norwich City to Bramall Lane, having won 2-1 away to Watford in their most recent league assignment, prior to being knocked out of the FA Cup at home to Cardiff City last weekend.

Chris Wilder’s side go into the action just one point off top-of-the-table Leeds United and level on points with second-place Burnley, highlighting the importance of the match.

New signings in the January window could be essential, in order to give them the best possible chance of sealing a quickfire return to the Premier League, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain recently emerging as an exciting target – they are reportedly in talks with the former Arsenal and Liverpool man.

United have also been backed to complete the loan signing of Shea Charles, which would be a controversial transfer, considering Southampton have only just recalled him from a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month.

Sheffield United leading race to sign attacker as fee agreed

According to Nixon on Patreon [via The Bladesman], Sheffield United have agreed a fee with Leicester to sign Tom Cannon, with a bid of £13m including bonuses accepted.

The Leicester City striker is a wanted man this month, with Sunderland among those who are interested in acquiring his signature on loan, but it looks as though the Blades are the clear favourites to get their man, as they now move on to try and agree personal terms with the player.

United fans will likely be buoyed by this update, considering Cannon is a young footballer with so much quality, being hailed by Liam Rosenior back in 2023: “I thought Tom Cannon was outstanding, one of the best we’ve played against by far.”

The Englishman has done well for Stoke this season, scoring nine goals in 22 Championship appearances, showing that he knows how to score at an impressive rate in the division.

Cannon is also now a two-cap Republic of Ireland international, making the step up to representing his country, and there is still so much more to come in his career.

For United, there are going to be tight games between now and the end of the season when one moment of attacking brilliance could turn a draw into a win. For that reason, snapping up Cannon for the remainder of the campaign could make all the difference in the promotion battle.

Ahead of milestone 100th Test, Warner vows to play like his old self

“I know when I’m at my best, I’m taking the bowlers on”, he said, two days out of Boxing Day Test

David Warner has vowed to go back to the future on the eve of his 100th Test as he strives to end his lean three-year run in Test cricket ahead of a massive 12 months for Australia’s Test team.Warner’s milestone has given him pause to reflect on what has got him to this point and what has made him the player he is. He is just 78 runs shy of 8000 Test runs, and only four openers in history have scored more than his 24 Test centuries. Yet he has not passed three figures in Test cricket since January 2020.But with his milestone match just two days away, he has vowed to play like the Warner of old as he searches for that elusive Test century.”I know when I’m at my best, I’m taking the bowlers on,” he said on Saturday. “It goes well and it flows with the team and the guy at the other end. Now I’ve probably gone a bit more responsible and trying to put the team into a good position without playing a bit rash.”If anything I can probably be a bit more aggressive and go back to the older me, take them on a little bit more. But I think that also is dictated from what wickets you are getting.”You don’t want to have a dig at the curators, but the last two years our wickets have been green. If I go out there play a cover drive and nick one, you guys [the media] will have a feeding frenzy.”But now I’m in good positions and I’m nicking off, that’s the nature of the beast. This might be a wicket where I can go out and play like the old me. So you have to adapt to those conditions that’s what I’ve been doing the last 18 months.”Warner’s assertion that he has been more circumspect is evident in his strike-rate over the last three years. It has dipped to 57.21 compared to his staggering career rate of 71.18. Even more concerning though is the runs. In his last 15 Tests and 27 innings he has averaged just 26.07 with only four half-centuries. His numbers are even leaner in 2022. He has not scored a half-century in his last 10 Test innings.Warner’s claim that he needs to be more aggressive doesn’t quite stack up against some of his dismissals in the West Indies series where he was out driving aggressively away from his body in three of his four innings. But he claims he has been out of luck rather than out of form from either a technical or decision-making standpoint.”You look at some of the chop-ons and I’ve been in great positions when I’ve been nicked off,” Warner said. “So there’s nothing you can actually do about that. That’s what happens in the game of cricket, it ebbs and flows.”People [were] writing me off in that one-day game here [against England] and I went out and scored a hundred on a pretty dicey wicket.”It is about making runs. You’re never out of form. They’re not the words that I use and they’re definitely not used in our change rooms. It’s about [being] out of runs. And for me, I’ve got those starts but I keep having a little bit of misfortune but at the end of the day it comes around and when it comes around it comes around fast.”Warner is hopeful it can come thick and fast on Boxing Day against a familiar foe. In celebrating his 100th Test this week he has been reminded of some of his great innings against South Africa, including his extraordinary 2014 tour that yielded three centuries against a world-class attack. While South Africa’s current attack hopes they have inflicted some psychological scarring on Warner in Brisbane, he has no such fears.”I think if you look at the attacks that I’ve faced over my career, I wake up every day going into the nets facing the best attack in the world,” Warner said.”I’ve faced guys that bowl 145kph every training session. So it’s not different for me. Am I scared going in those nets? 100% I’m scared. Going into the nets and facing those guys for the last decade has been a challenge in itself.”But going out there and knowing that I’ve put numbers on the board against some of the great attacks that South Africa has produced, they stay with me when I go out there. You speak about Cape Town [2014], that was probably my best whole batting performance from the batting perspective and a lot of good things happened to me when I played against the South African attack.”For me, it’s about as I said, come out here with a positive mindset and hopefully I’ll keep replicating that.”

Norwich now open talks to sign new £4m defender for Thorup in January

da betano casino: With those at Carrow Road looking to hand Johannes Hoff Thorup the players to finally get the best out of his system on a consistent basis, Norwich City have reportedly opened talks to sign a January target.

Norwich transfer news

da casino: The Canaries have been one of the most interesting sides to watch in the Championship so far this season. Whilst it’s been goals galore at times, there’s also been moments to forget against struggling sides such as Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth. What has become clearer by the day is that they are, simply put, a side in transition and in the early stage of a fresh project under Thorup.

When things have clicked, Norwich have been undeniable. When they haven’t, however, which has arguably been too often, the Canaries have been predictable and beatable, as was the case against Burnley last time out.

The January transfer window could quickly add the consistency that Thorup and Norwich so desperately crave, however, especially if they add the much-needed experience that they’ve been linked to.

According to Goal in Brazil, Norwich have opened talks to sign Marlon from Brazilian side Cruzeiro in the January transfer window. The 27-year-old left-back is reportedly worth up to £4m in a deal that certainly isn’t cheap for those at Carrow Road, but one which may prove to be worthwhile.

The Norwich City youngster has the potential to become a “regular starter” for the club.

ByDan Emery Nov 27, 2024

As things stand, Thorup’s best option down that left-hand side is the young Callum Doyle. And although the 21-year-old has impressed, experience can often prove to be the key to unlocking a place in the Championship playoffs – experience which Marlon has in abundance.

Even if the 27-year-old simply added further depth too, it would be more than welcomed amid a hectic schedule in England’s second tier.

Marlon can add key experience amid playoff push

Sat as many as eight points adrift of the playoffs in the Championship ahead of the January transfer window, Norwich need all the help they can get if they are to push on and cause the ultimate shock come May. What could start with Marlon should end with further reinforcements, but it remains to be seen whether those at Carrow Road will be willing to splash out beyond the left-back.

A player who has spent the majority of his career in Brazil, barring spells in Turkey playing for Ankaragucu and Trabzonspor as well as in Portugal at Boavista, a January switch to Norwich would also be a big deal for Marlon whilst he is still 27 years old and arguably in his best years.

£4m is certainly a hefty fee for a 27-year-old, however, especially given that Thorup already has Doyle to call on. Questions would also be asked whether investing in a left-back is the best way to transform this current Norwich side.

Marlon has the experience to hand the Canaries a solid option, but whether he’d be the best use of their funds leads to another answer entirely.

India to face England in Women's U-19 T20 World Cup final

India spun out New Zealand, before England edged out Australia in a nail-biter

It was heartbreak and ecstasy in equal measures in Potchefstroom as India and England made the final of the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup to be played on Sunday. While India comfortably beat New Zealand in the first semi-final, tensions swayed one way and then the other before England edged Australia out by three runs in a low-scoring thriller.Defending 99, England fast bowlers Ellie Anderson and Alexa Stonehouse struck early before legspinner Hannah Baker’s triple-strike crippled Australia. She varied her flight and length to bowl Ella Hayward and then got enough purchase from the surface to have Australia captain Rhys McKenna caught at mid-off and trapped wicketkeeper Paris Hall three balls later to have them at 59 for 7.Ella Wilson and Milly Illingworth, batting at No. 9 and No. 10, managed to hit a four apiece towards the end to get the equation down to Australia needing four with two wickets and just shy of three overs in hand. But the latter was run out via a direct hit from Ryana MacDonald-Gay from mid-off before Grace Scrivens trapped No. 11 Maggie Clark lbw with her offspin to spark off wild celebrations.Milly Illingworth was run out off a direct-hit•ICC/Getty Images

The scene was far removed from the halfway stage when Clark, Hayward and Sianna Ginger walked back with three-fors. The script went awry for England after opting to bat, as they lost wickets at regular intervals to be placed at 29 for 4 at the end of the powerplay. The pace of Illingworth and the nagging lengths of Clark had seen the back of Liberty Heap – who has forged a successful alliance at the top with captain Scrivens – and No. 3 Niamh Holland. Offspinner Hayward inflicted further misery by breaking the back of the middle order. But Scrivens – second at present in the tournament’s list of run-scorers – held one end up even as she saw England slide to 37 for 5 in the ninth over. However, a full length ball from seamer Ginger was hard to resist for her and she holed out to Claire Moore at long-off for 20. It was only because of a 46-run eighth-wicket partnership between Stonehouse (25) and Josie Groves (15) that England had managed to get close to hundred.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India spin out New ZealandEarlier in the day, India’s spinners wove a web around New Zealand and kept them to 107 for 9 before a masterclass from opener Shweta Sehrawat helped them cruise to an eight-wicket win. Sehrawat scored an unbeaten 61 off just 45 balls with ten fours and was involved in a second-wicket partnership of 62 with Soumya Tiwari (26). It was her third half-century in the competition, by virtue of which she found herself atop the batting charts. This was after legspinner Parshavi Chopra, who shone with a Player-of-the-Match performance against Sri Lanka, starred with three for 20 to leave New Zealand short of par. She broke the 37-run second-wicket partnership between Georgia Plimmer and Isabella Gaze (26) by trapping the latter lbw.Only Plimmer offered some resistance with the bat with a 32-ball 35 and she was the seventh batter out with the score on 91.

£53m striker was keen to join West Ham last January, Nuno could sign him now instead

da roleta: West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo is arguably in dire need of a proven goalscorer to lead his forward line, amid doubts surrounding Niclas Füllkrug and Callum Wilson.

West Ham identify attacking targets for January

da 888casino: Only Nottingham Forest and bottom side Wolves have scored fewer Premier League goals than West Ham so far, with the Hammers alongside Aston Villa and Newcastle as the division’s second-lowest scorers so far.

Following an injury-ridden and all-round lacklustre career at the London Stadium since his move from Borussia Dortmund, despite flashes of occasional brilliance, West Ham brought another injury-prone striker in Callum Wilson to Rush Green on a free transfer to back up the German.

West Ham’s results in the Premier League so far

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

The former Newcastle favourite, who had a habit of scoring against West Ham, is off the mark for his new club after bagging an injury-time goal in their 3-0 win away to Nottingham Forest just prior to the September international break.

Since Nuno’s arrival, the Portuguese has elected to go with Fullkrug as the club’s starting number nine — perhaps hoping he can eventually inspire a Chris Wood-level resurgence from the 32-year-old, who racked up 16 goals in all competitions in his last season at Dortmund.

However, given both Wilson and Fullkrug’s torrid injury records, it is hardly prudent to rely on either of them ahead of what will be a long 2025/2026 campaign where the Hammers could be fighting relegation.

January represents an opportunity for West Ham to back Nuno with another centre-forward who can ease the burden on Fullkrug and Wilson, with the Irons believed to be interested in Man United’s Joshua Zirkzee as an option heading into the winter window.

Another very intriguing potential target is also beginning to resurface — Real Madrid starlet Endrick.

The 19-year-old is yet to play a single minute for Xabi Alonso this season, having missed the early part of 2025/2026 with thigh problems, and he’s been an unused substitute in all of their last five games.

Endrick, signed from Palmeiras for around £53 million, has reportedly been subject to an approach from West Ham who could look to sign the Brazil international on loan in January.

West Ham chances of signing Endrick alive for January

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, in an interview with Hammers News, Endrick was open to joining the East Londoners on a temporary deal last January, and the possibility of this happening at the turn of the year still cannot be ruled out.

Endrick, who was once widely regarded as one of the brightest attacking talents in world football, made headlines with his electrifying performances at Palmeiras before his high-profile transfer to Real Madrid.

However, despite his evident skill and potential, breaking into Real’s star-studded first team is a daunting challenge for any teenager, especially in a squad packed with established global superstars.

A loan spell at West Ham would offer the striker a perfect platform to gain valuable experience in a competitive environment on the world’s biggest stage playing Premier League football.

For Nuno’s side, securing a prospect of Endrick’s caliber would bolster their attacking options and inject much-needed creativity into their squad at zero cost — making the move an attractive one for both parties.
