Revamped batting approach yields Sri Lanka captain’s highest Test score

Be patient until you get settled at the crease, then trust yourself to catch up on the scoring rate later. This, essentially, is what Dimuth Karunaratne told himself as he made a start on the innings that produced his highest Test score.Karunaratne’s 244 off 437 balls was the highest individual score by a Sri Lanka batter since 2014, and only their second double century in six years. It allowed the hosts to surpass Bangladesh’s 541 for 7 declared, and made safe their situation in the game.Karunaratne said three failures during the recent Tests in the West Indies had prompted a re-think in his Test batting approach, and helped yield these results. He’d made scores of 12, 3 and 1 in the Caribbean, before finishing that tour with a 75.”In the West Indies I was trying to score runs quickly in the first few overs and really get among the runs,” he said. “But because that was unsuccessful I talked to the coach and asked him what I was doing wrong. He said as an opener just wait until you get set, because when you do that you make a big score, and that’s your game.”Related
No control, no problem: Crafty Dimuth Karunaratne conjures his own luck
Karunaratne isn't perfect but he's the best Sri Lanka have got
Rain takes over after breezy Tamim Iqbal fifty as first Test ends in high-scoring stalemate
While Karunaratne’s opening partner, Lahiru Thirimanne, made a brisk start, Karunaratne scored only 16 from his first 65 deliveries.”I tried to leave the ball a lot when I started here, and properly get settled,” he said. “I know that when I get set, I can catch up on the scoring rate later. That’s what I applied here. Even in home conditions, I wanted to make that my gameplan. I got good support from Thiri, who was scoring quickly in that period, so I was able to take my time.”Karunaratne has made big hundreds before – five of his 11 centuries now having brought scores of 150 or higher. He was desperate to capitalise on the easy pace of this surface. No pitch in Sri Lanka has yielded a draw in almost seven years.”On this pitch a fifty wasn’t enough for me,” he said. “I saw that almost everyone in the Bangladesh team got a fifty. I’m not the kind of player who’s satisfied with just getting a fifty on this kind of pitch. I wanted to turn my 50 into a hundred and my hundred into a one-fifty. And you very rarely get pitches like this in Sri Lanka – you generally get tracks that turn a lot. And when you go overseas, you get a lot of seaming conditions. I wanted to get the maximum out of this pitch.”Karunaratne was also on the field on all five days – totalling well over 26 hours of playing time. His own innings, which went for 656 minutes had come after he’d been on the field captaining for 780 minutes – Bangladesh having batted for 173 overs.”When you play a Test you have to be mentally prepared to be on the field all five days, whether that’s fielding or batting,” Karunaratne said. “Yes, you can feel it in your body when you’ve been fielding a couple of days, but when you get a chance to bat, you’ve got to take that opportunity.”Even in the West Indies I got a start a couple of times but couldn’t make a big score. So once I got a start and got set here, I really wanted to bat long here, especially as they’d already made a big score. I was able to do that. I’m tired, but I really enjoyed it, and when you’re enjoying it you don’t feel the fatigue so much. On day five, we wanted to declare once we got to certain score, but if we hadn’t wanted to do that, I could have batted all day today as well.”
da blaze casino: Liverpool have now reportedly held concrete talks to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, as they look to the January transfer window in an attempt to solve their problems.
da 888: The Reds are in a crisis, that can no longer be denied. Defeat against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday slammed home just how much trouble Arne Slot’s side find themselves in. Their crown has evaporated, their dominance has subsided and they sit in the bottom half after 12 games in the Premier League.
Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher had his say on the Reds’ problems on Monday Night Football, saying that he would like to see Mohamed Salah come out and speak for the side.
“A year ago this weekend, Mo Salah wasn’t shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation, about the club not offering him a contract.
“I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets man of the match or he needs a new contract. I would like to see Salah come out as one of the leaders, one the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn’t always be the captain.”
The Egyptian, however, may decide to let his football do the talking as Liverpool desperately look to get back on track against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.
The Champions League has often handed the Premier League champions some much-needed reprieve this season, with victory over Real Madrid the best win of their season last time out.
Now, the visit of PSV presents Slot’s side with a similar opportunity to turn results around, before squaring off against West Ham United this weekend.

Meanwhile, in the middle of their dismal period of form, Liverpool have reportedly been getting to work off the pitch on much-needed reinforcements.
Liverpool now "seriously working" on Semenyo deal
As reported by Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool are now “seriously working” on a deal to sign Semenyo from Bournemouth in the January transfer window.
Despite suggestions he has chosen to join Manchester United, those at Anfield have reportedly held “concrete talks” in pursuit of the winger, who has a release clause worth around €70m (£62m).
There is plenty of competition, but Liverpool should go all out to land Semenyo in January. They’ve missed the direct ability that Luis Diaz provided them – the ability that draws fouls, breaks low blocks down and evades an opposition press. Semenyo, however, can offer them exactly that.
The Bournemouth star has enjoyed 10 more successful take-ons than Salah so far this season and has earned high praise from ex-Liverpool man Jamie Redknapp as a result. The Sky Sports pundit described Semenyo as “unique” earlier in the campaign.

Former England wicketkeeper had retired from international duty in 2019 over anxiety issues

Sarah Taylor, the former England international widely regarded as one of the most gifted wicketkeepers in the game, is to make a playing comeback with Welsh Fire in the Hundred.Taylor, who announced her retirement from international cricket in September 2019 following a long battle with anxiety, said she never turned her back on domestic cricket, although she didn’t pick up her bat for nearly 18 months afterwards.Once she did, she rediscovered something from nearly 15 years ago that signalled she could fulfil an ambition to play in the new tournament. There were no shots off the back foot as she looked to attack and dominate the bowler and found, in her words, “some ego, aggression, dismissiveness” and a little bit of “arrogance” – all of which had gone missing as she struggled in the spotlight of international cricket and under the weight of expectation she placed on herself.Related

“I genuinely had to blow dust off my cricket bag,” Taylor said. “And I just felt back to me again. Weirdly enough I wasn’t batting like I was when I retired, I was batting like I was when I was back in 2006 when I made my debut… I’ve been missing that girl.”I wanted to get back to that for so long, I was unsure how. Luckily for me becoming more grounded and more of a rounded, balanced person has helped me get that girl back essentially.”A big part of that balance has come from teaching others. Upon her international retirement Taylor became a sports and life coach at Bede’s School in Eastbourne. Last month, she was appointed as a wicketkeeping coach with Sussex, becoming the first woman to work as a skills coach at a men’s county team and one of the few women around the world to coach in professional men’s sport.”I just needed to shut the door on cricket, just disappear for a little bit in my own little bubble and work out a few things,” Taylor said. “I was fortunate to join up with the Sussex guys just to learn a lot about me as a coach, about how I operated in a group in that team environment and it just felt really normal again, which is what I was hiding from a little bit.”It opened my eyes to the fact that I wanted to be part of a team again but I didn’t know to what extent. It was then a case of having that hit and I felt absolutely fine. I wasn’t scared of the idea of playing, whereas before I was.”Taylor told ESPNcricinfo in January that she hadn’t ruled out a return to playing but the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed the inaugural edition of the Hundred, also set back her return to the nets with her kit in storage at school while she was on furlough.Taylor made 226 appearances for England, winning three Ashes series and two World Cups, in 2009 and 2017. At the time of her retirement nobody in the women’s game had effected more dismissals in all formats than her 232. She scored 6533 international runs with seven centuries and 36 fifties and she remains the tenth leading run-scorer in both ODI and T20Is.”Once I realised I’ve not lost it completely, I might as well give it a go,” Taylor said. “The Hundred is something I would love to have been a part of – last year was a bit too early personally – but it skipped a year and the chance to be there is a little bit of a no-brainer, really.”Welsh Fire open their campaign against Northern Superchargers at Headingley on July 24. But it was who she will be working with, from both playing and coaching perspectives, that helped Taylor choose from a number of offers that were on the table.”A draw for me was also playing with [Australia captain] Meg Lanning, that’s always something that I’ve wanted to do for quite a few years,” Taylor said. “I’m fed up of fetching her balls rather than being at the non-striker’s end, so that will be nice.”It’s a good opportunity career-wise, I can’t wait to work with Beth Mooney, she’s a great player. Coaching-wise it’s a good move for me to work with [Australia Women coach] Matthew Mott, who’s an amazing coach. I’m still very much looking at the coaching role in the future but this should be a little bit of fun.”Whether Taylor takes the gloves at Welsh Fire is yet to be decided and she is typically self-effacing about the prospect.”I did an hour’s keeping the other day, I didn’t move very well afterwards,” she added with a smile. “My keeping, I haven’t lost it. I barely moved my feet anyway so my hands just took over and they’ve still got it. I’ve got nothing to lose so I’m just going to try to enjoy every moment.”Beth Mooney is a phenomenal keeper in her own right and doesn’t really get the chance with the Australians with [Alyssa] Healy there, so that’s still to be spoken about. If I get a run around in the field I’m not actually going to complain because I do enjoy it.”Taylor reckons it would be “stupid not to play a few games before the tournament” with some matches for Sussex the most likely avenue for a competitive return.Sarah Taylor is now part of Sussex’s coaching staff•Getty Images
Sussex is also where she sees her coaching career long-term, working with the likes of first-team captain Ben Brown as a wicketkeeping coach, but she also hopes it paves the way to a freelance coaching role “around the world” – an irony not lost on Taylor, who struggled being away from home for such long stretches as a player. But this time it feels different. “For a long time, I didn’t really enjoy being the centre of attention, so the more success I had the more I struggled with that balance,” she said. “I’m all of a sudden taking complete attention away from me and I’m affecting someone.”I was The Oval and watching Ben Brown keep, he took a wonderful stumping and you feel a sense of pride for all the hard work you put in with him and he’s put in so much hard work.”I’d love to be known as a keeping coach in world cricket. I don’t think I will remove myself from this role for a very long time, I love working for Sussex, I love the coaching staff there and it’s home. The kids coming through the pathway, I’d be stupid to disappear. But a keeping coach who travels the world, that would be the ideal lifestyle for me, ironically.”Taylor will be joined at Welsh Fire by Australian legspinner Georgia Wareham, replacing Jess Jonassen, who has withdrawn from the competition for personal reasons.Mott said: “It is fantastic news that Sarah and Georgia will be part of our squad this summer. Sarah is one of the best cricketers England has ever produced. Her experience and ability to influence games will be vital as we look to establish some strong foundations in our first campaign.”Georgia’s has been an integral part of the Australian side and she’ll bring a real x-factor to our squad.”

The South Africa board now runs the risk of ministerial intervention

Cricket South Africa runs the risk of ministerial intervention after its Members’ Council – the decision-making arm of the organisation, which is made up of provincial presidents – rejected the interim board’s proposal for a majority independent board. At a meeting on Saturday, the members’ council advised the interim board that eight of its 14 participants voted against an independent board. This means the interim board is unable to complete one its most pressing tasks as directed by the country’s sports minister Nathi Mthethwa: to lay the framework for a new board in line with the 2012 Nicholson Commission. The interim board and minister are expected to address the public on further steps in the coming days. The reluctance of the Members’ Council to implement an independent board dates back to the time that the Nicholson report was presented to them. Part of the reason the Members’ Council continue to appoint non-independent directors is to please the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the umbrella body under which all sports federation in this country operate – SASCOC does not approve of a majority of independent directors. That means cricket’s is mostly run by people who are involved in the domestic structures and not outsiders from the corporate world or elsewhere.Under the non-independent board, CSA has been steeped in administrative chaos that has seen several senior staff suspended for alleged misconduct and resulted in severe financial losses. Currently, CSA is still working to avoid debt that could run into hundreds of millions of Rands as a result of the failure to secure broadcasting rights for a domestic franchise T20 tournament, the Mzansi Super League, among other things. The South African Cricketers Association has previously called the situation CSA is in “an existential crisis”, something the sports minister has recognised and acted on.It was on Mthethwa’s insistence that the interim board was put in place after he threatened to step in at CSA following 18 months of headline-making over questionable governance, which led to the suspension and eventual sacking of CEO Thabang Moroe. CSA is still without a permanent CEO, and is on its third acting head, and is also without a board or a framework for how to appoint one, which essentially puts it back where it was six months go – on the cusp of government intervention.Mthethwa can act according to the country’s National Sport and Recreation Act, which gives him the power to intervene “in any dispute, alleged mismanagement or other related matter that is likely to bring a sport into disrepute”. He can also take away funding from CSA and may no longer recognise it as a national federation.
da brwin: Newcastle United have been something of a mixed bag this season. Even in victory against Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, the hosts left something to be desired after winning 2-0 and rising to nine points from four outings.
da stake casino: Though the Magpies needed to bounce back after that limp defeat in the Premier League against West Ham United at the weekend, there are many levels still to scale in order to restore that finest, full-throttle style that Eddie Howe’s Tyneside outfit have become defined by in recent years.
However, the fact remains that Newcastle lack flair and creativity and inspiration across the midfield and the final third right now. Nick Woltemade has been a revelation since completing his club-record £69m transfer from Stuttgart at the end of August, but he is not the prime version of Alexander Isak in black and white stripes. Not yet.
And the German goalscorer can’t do it all alone. Anthony Gordon is still struggling and found his issues exacerbated on Wednesday, pulled off with another suspected hip injury after a showing that left plenty to be desired.
Why Newcastle are so inconsistent
Newcastle have been consistent in their inconsistency this season, and that’s a problem. Gordon is a case in point, but also the £55m right winger Anthony Elanga, who has blanked across 16 matches since his summer switch from Nottingham Forest.
Howe would have hoped the Sweden international (and Gordon) would have established firmer channels down the flanks, and their struggles in this regard have run counter to Howe’s tactical vision and its implementation.
Joelinton’s drop-off has been accentuated against the efforts of Bruno Guimaraes and, particularly, Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park. So elegant and effective are the robust pair, with the 29-year-old Brazilian lagging behind after years of robust service.
Change is necessary, and while players like Joelinton have been invaluable parts of this sustained period of progress, they are not indispensable and it is probable that a move for a new high-profile centre-midfielder will be explored in 2026.
In spite of Tonali’s emergence as one of the best deep-lying midfielders in the league, United seem to have a problem effectively passing the ball at the moment.
Howe’s Newcastle system is one of the most progressive in the Premier League, with transitional play at the forefront, but more is needed, and the solution might be to drop a fan favourite who’s reached legend status this year.
Howe must drop Newcastle star who's moved clear of Isak
Newcastle won against Athletic Bilbao, and opening the scoring was Big Dan Burn, as he has been affectionately nicknamed by the Toon supporters.
Club legend? The 6 foot 7 defender has certainly endeared himself to his boyhood club since joining from Brighton in January 2022, featuring prominently under Howe’s wing and scoring the first goal in United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley last year to lift the Carabao Cup.
But has he scored a goal more impressive in isolation than in the Champions League this week? Header of the Season, no doubt. In fact, the 33-year-old’s second goal in Europe’s premium club competition means he has edged ahead of Isak in the all-time scoring charts. A rather facetious statistic, but one lapped up by the fanbase all the same.
Of course, while Burn is one of the staple stars of the Howe era, we cannot turn away from the negative noise around his role and performances in recent weeks.
Frankly, the more laboured and sedate style of a team like Bilbao opens the door for Burn to show off his strongest qualities. He excelled, and remains a trusty member of Howe’s squad, having been among the first to be signed after the manager’s appointment nearly four years ago.
But Lewis Hall is far more dynamic as a full-back, and his cameo against the Spaniards suggests Howe might be wise to drop Burn as soon as the younger man recovers his full match fitness.
For all the concerns over Newcastle’s passing, they indeed stand as one of the most forward-thinking distributors in the Premier League. Statistics can be misleading, though, and that does not translate to fluent and sharp transitional play.
That is the objective, and Hall could be a strong proponent in enacting the right tactical change on Tyneside. Content creator Geordie Josh hailed the 21-year-old as a “generational left-back in the making” after his promising injury return, and we have all seen in the past his prowess on the ball and in defending on the wing of the backline.

Burn, awarded a 9/10 match rating from the Chronicle Live against La Liga opponents, not only scoring an emphatic header but setting the standards with a steely, composed defensive display.
But he’s slow and less multi-faceted than a rising star such as Hall, who could become a nailed-down starter in the coming weeks as he builds his fitness up.
While Big Dan Burn will continue to be a dependable, industrious and beloved part of Howe’s Magpies side, he cannot start every game going forward; he is not progressive enough to propel the system back into full throttle.
Hall, however, has the perfect style to dovetail back in and make things tick.
Alongside Burn: Howe must drop Newcastle star who's "nowhere near his best"
Eddie Howe could be prepared to ditch this underperforming Newcastle United star later today.
