Anaru Kitchen, a stalwart in New Zealand domestic cricket, has decided to walk away at the end of the 2021-22 season. The 38-year old amassed 10,841 runs, and five trophies, in 348 games across all formats for Auckland and Otago. Kitchen made his international debut in December 2017, nine years into his professional career, and played five T20Is for New Zealand.”Cricket started for me the same as it does for most New Zealand kids, with plenty of backyard cricket and beach cricket on family holidays,” he said in an Otago Cricket press release. “Once I got a hold of the game, I remember the old man making me bat with a stump instead of a bat which was a good challenge.”In December 2008, Kitchen announced his arrival on the domestic scene with a half-century on debut for Auckland against Canterbury in the State Shield, playing against the likes of Shane Bond and Chris Harris in one of the Eden Park Ovals.”I was batting four or five walking out to bat, when Auckland captain Richard Jones walked past me and said, ‘It is hooping out there mate, good luck’,” Kitchen said. ‘I thought to myself, this is Shane Bond, one of New Zealand’s best fast bowlers… let’s see how this goes.”I was lucky to bat with now great mate, Reece Young, who guided me through the innings, and from there I managed to top score with 69 runs”.A solid left-arm spinner as well, Kitchen picked up 130 wickets across formats and was part of Auckland’s Plunket Shield winning side in 2008-09. Four more titles came his way – the Ford Trophy in 2010-11 and 2012-13 and the Super Smash in 2010-11 & 2011-12 – before he eventually moved to Otago in search of a new challenge.”It was a pleasure to have Anaru at Otago,” their CEO Mike Coggan said. “He was an important signing back in 2015-16, a great team man and a consistent performer with bat and ball ever since his arrival from Auckland.”I will not forget the memorable double-century Anaz (Anaru) scored at home versus Northern Districts back in 2017. At his best, he was one the cleanest strikers of a cricket ball in domestic cricket. Otago Cricket wish Anaru all the very best in retirement.”Kitchen paid thanks to his supporters as he prepared to step aside and spend more time with his two boys and partner, before returning to work as an electrician for Aotea Electric.”Reece Young, Richard Jones, Gareth Hopkins and Rob Walter are mentors that have given me all the advice and guidance I could ask for,” he said. “I have also had brilliant support from the players and staff at Otago Cricket, who welcomed me with open arms and gave me a home.”

Man City have already sold Alvarez 2.0, he’s now outperforming Grealish

da luck: One of the biggest, and arguably more surprising transfers of the summer window in 2024 was that of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine World Cup winner departed the Etihad Stadium after just two seasons in an £81m move.

da betobet: His short time at the eight-time Premier League champions was hugely successful. The 24-year-old pulled on the sky blue shirt 103 times, scoring 36 times and grabbing 18 assists. That included a very impressive 11 goals and nine assists in 36 games last season.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

He also has quite an outstanding trophy cabinet to show for his efforts during his time under Pep Guardiola, winning seven. As part of those seven trophies, he won the treble at the Etihad Stadium in 2022/23, which included the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup.

There has been plenty of noise surrounding his replacement this summer, and City did not end up bringing anyone in. However, they may well have had his dream replacement right under their noses but sold him a few years ago. That player is Ferran Torres.

Torres’ record at Barcelona

The Spain international made the move back to his native country in December of 2021, ahead of the 2022 January transfer window. It was a deal that represented a brilliant piece of business for the Cityzens.

They paid the Euro 2024 winner’s former club Valencia just £20.87m to acquire his services in August 2020 and received superb profit. Specifically, that was £46.7m from Barcelona up front and £8.5m in add-ons.

His time at Barca, has, on a personal note, been successful so far. He has played 117 games for the La Liga giants, scoring 26 goals and registering 14 assists. That includes a particularly successful 2023/24 campaign, his best yet in that famous blue and red shirt.

Had the winger still been at the Etihad Stadium nowadays, he could have been a perfect replacement for Alvarez while also providing some fierce competition to one of City’s current stars, Jack Grealish, whom he has begun to outperform.

Jack Grealish’s record at Man City

Since joining City in 2021 for a then-British record £100m, Grealish has certainly struggled to fully settle into a hugely successful side. The Cityzens have dominated English, and for a time, European football whilst the Englishman has been at the club, but he has never really looked like the same player he was at Aston Villa.

In 127 games for Guardiola’s side, the 28-year-old has scored just 14 goals and registered just 18 assists. His most productive campaign so far was in 2022/23, where Grealish scored five goals and assisted seven in 28 Premier League games.

He has certainly struggled to recapture the form he showed as a Villan, which earned him his big move to Manchester. His best season in England’s top flight for his boyhood club brought him six goals and ten assists.

The City number 10 has been outscored by Torres since he departed the club in the winter of 2021/22. This certainly could suggest a miscalculation on City’s part to sell the Spaniard to Barcelona, and he could have given the Englishman some stern competition for his place in the team.

Interestingly, the duo have played six times with each other, and have featured in the same team for a combined 385 minutes. Had Torres stayed at the Etihad Stadium, City fans could well have seen this duo play together more often, and even compete for a direct place in the lineup.

Either way the “special” Torres, as football scout Antonio Mango described him, could have been their ideal replacement for Alvarez this summer, not least due to his flexibility to feature through the middle or on the flanks.

As it is, the versatile star is now shining away from Manchester, with there a question to be asked as to whether he was moved on too soon.

Sky Sports: Celtic agree deal to sign £25,000-p/w ace, personal terms done

da betsul: Celtic have agreed a deal to bring in another new face before the transfer window slams shut with Brendan Rodgers' side looking to bolster their backline in the final hours of the window.

Celtic best in league again so far

da dobrowin: After three games of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, Celtic remain the best in the division. Buoyed by the permanent additions of Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo, Rodgers' side have won all three of their opening games and are yet to concede a goal, having scored nine in the process.

Such a record puts them unsurprisingly top of the division, ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference and two points clear of bitter rivals Rangers.

Imagine him & Engels: Celtic lining up last-gasp swoop for £4m star

The Hoops are reportedly looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

But there is still lots of work to be done at Parkhead; the arrival of Barcelona defender Alex Valle helped ease concerns at the back, with the 20-year-old joining on loan for the 2024/25 campaign after impressing with the Barcelona youth side.

They would also like to add a midfielder before the window slams shut, with Augsburg ace Arne Engels seemingly the man chosen to replace Matt O'Riley, who completed a move to Brighton last week.

Indeed, Celtic have reportedly agreed a club-record £11m deal to sign Engels after having two bids rejected previously. The midfielder is expected to join the club in the final hours of the transfer window and sign a four-year deal in Glasgow. And he won't be the only new arrival at the club.

Celtic agree to sign Auston Trusty

Now, it has emerged that Celtic have also agreed a deal to sign Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty ahead of the deadline.

The Bhoys will shell out up to £6m for the defender, according to Sky Sports, with Trusty having already passed the first part of his medical and now set to sign a five-year deal at Parkhead after having agreed terms ahead of time.

Currently taking home an impressive £25,000-a-week at Bramall Lane, were Celtic to match that fee it would put him among the highest earners at the club.

Trusty was part of the Sheffield United defence relegated from the Premier League in 2023/24, appearing 32 times as his side conceded a mammoth 104 goals across the 38 campaign.

The former Arsenal man was a different story in the Championship during his time with Birmingham City though, hailed as "incredible" by fellow defender George Friend.

“I think Trusty has been incredible. I don’t think in the whole time I have been in the Championship I have seen anyone better at coming from a league abroad and just taking to the Championship so easily."

Now, the defender is set to lend his talents to Rodgers and co as they look to defend their Scottish League and Cup crowns this season.

Dan Christian locks in Nottinghamshire return as T20 captain

Australian allrounder returns for seventh season at Trent Bridge

Dan Christian will return to Nottinghamshire for a seventh season in 2022 after re-signing as the club’s T20 Blast captain.Christian, who will turn 39 before flying to the UK at the end of May, is among of the world’s most decorated T20 cricketers and a three-time Blast winner. He spent six consecutive seasons at Notts between 2015 and 2020, captaining them to the title in 2017 and 2020 to add to his triumph with Hampshire in 2010.He was due to play a seventh consecutive season for them in 2021 and played two second XI T20 games as a warm-up for the Blast after arriving in Nottingham, but a shock recall to Australia’s T20I set-up saw him miss the full season, instead playing on their tours against West Indies and Bangladesh. In Christian’s absence, Dane Paterson – only an occasional feature of the T20 side – was Notts’ only overseas player but they finished top of the North Group at a canter under Steven Mullaney’s captaincy. They looked set for Finals Day at 66 for 1 chasing 126 against Hampshire in the quarter-finals, but somehow collapsed to 123 all out.”It was great to see other players step up with bat and ball in Dan’s absence last season, and the team was really well led by Steven Mullaney,” Peter Moores, Notts’ head coach, said. “To now have the chance to re-add a player of Dan’s presence and quality to that group is exciting and, come the start of the Blast in late-May, we’ll be raring to go and confident of a successful campaign.”Dan’s ability, desire and passion have made him a key part of our club since his arrival in 2015, and we can’t wait to have him back with us. He’s a match-winner in his own right, and a terrific leader and example to everyone in our dressing room.”Christian said: “I’ve had great times in Nottingham over a number of years. We’ve seen some great improvements in individuals throughout that time, won a couple of comps, and Notts is a club that’s overall fantastic to be part of.”It’s really exciting to be returning to a place where I’ve made so many great memories on and off the field, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of packed houses at Trent Bridge again too. My philosophy will remain the same for 2022 – to back our ability and be positive. The ultimate aim is to get our hands back on that trophy in July.”Christian is Notts’ third overseas player registered for the 2022 season, along with Paterson and his compatriot James Pattinson. Teams are allowed to register three overseas players at any one time, with a maximum of two in their starting XI in any given competition.

Watch out Wilson: Newcastle can land Isak 2.0 in £25m talisman

da apostebet: Despite scoring 85 Premier League goals last season, Newcastle United are in the market to try and further improve their forward line.

da premier bet: Eddie Howe’s side already have arguably two of the best players in the division in the form of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, but the Magpies boss is still craving that third player to complete his attacking trio.

Noni Madueke once looked the most likely to move to St James’ Park, apparently already agreeing personal terms, but the deal is yet to progress with just a week left in the window.

As a result, other targets are still being considered for a potential move to Tyneside, but they will need to act quickly if they are to secure a new attacker.

Any transfer could spell bad news for one Magpies talent who could find himself closer to the exit door.

Callum Wilson’s time at Newcastle

After joining Newcastle in a £20m move from Bournemouth back in September 2020, striker Callum Wilson made an immediate impact on Tyneside.

callum-wilson-newcastle-united

The Englishman scored 20 goals in his first two campaigns at St James’, helping the club during the transitional period after the takeover by the Saudi PIF.

However, in recent months, the 32-year-old has struggled with injuries, only making 20 Premier League appearances last term and missing the season opener with Southampton at the weekend.

The signing of fellow striker Will Osula from Sheffield United could also spell bad news for Wilson, whilst one other potential addition could push him further down the pecking order under Howe.

Why David could be Isak 2.0 for Newcastle

Swedish striker Isak has been a phenomenal addition for Newcastle after his £60m move from Real Sociedad back in the summer of 2022, scoring 35 Premier League goals in the last two seasons.

He’s been the main focal point in the club’s attempts to secure Champions League football, with his subsequent form attracting big-money interest from Chelsea and Arsenal this summer.

However, this summer they could land another version of the 24-year-old in the form of Lille forward Jonathan David, who has previously been linked with a move to the club.

The Canadian has been a constant source of goals in Ligue 1 over the past couple of years, with FBref ranking the striker as a similar player to the current Newcastle star.

When delving into their respective stats from the 2023/24 campaign, the duo are very similar, with David even bettering the Swede in numerous key areas.

David, who’s previously been described as “one of the best strikers in the world” by journalist Tony Marinaro, registered the same amount of combined goals and assists as Isak during 2023/24 whilst placing more of his efforts on target.

He also completed more of the passes that he attempted, whilst winning more aerial duels, making him an excellent all-round option for Howe’s side.

It has previously been reported that the Lille talisman could be available for as little as £25m this summer, with his contract set to expire in less than 12 months time. As evident from his stats compared to Isak last season, he would be a sensational addition, potentially ending Wilson’s time on Tyneside.

With his injuries in recent times, the club should look to offload the former Bournemouth ace, with the Canadian an excellent option to replace the Englishman this summer.

He possesses all of the qualities needed to thrive in England's top-flight, potentially following in the footsteps of Isak and becoming a fan-favourite at St James'.

Ravi, Ostwal skittle Bangladesh for 111 as India enter semi-finals

Defending champions knocked out as India set up semi-final clash against Australia

Bangladesh’s hopes of defending their U-19 World Cup title ended in the quarter-final stage as India’s bowlers rolled them over for 111.Left-arm seamer Ravi Kumar took three wickets in his first spell. Left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwal then took two. Two Bangladesh batters were run out, and if it wasn’t for SM Meherob’s 30, India could’ve been chasing even lesser.Although India had a brief hiccup in the chase, they eventually got home with five wickets in hand. The returning Yash Dhull opted to field on a surface where the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka quarter-final had produced only 264 runs across both innings, and Ravi found swing and rattled Bangladesh with his 3 for 14 up top. He first broke through Mahfijul Islam’s defense before Iftakher Hossain cut a wide ball to backward point. Then, soon enough, Prantik Nawrose Nabil was walking back after edging an attempted drive that was going across him. From the other end, Rajvardhan Hangargekar troubled Bangladesh with his pace, his yorkers, and a mean short ball. Together, Ravi and Hangargekar strangled the run flow, aided by sharp fielding inside the circle.Left-arm spinner Ostwal then found grip off the surface and was rewarded when he had Ariful Islam nicking. Then he clean bowled Md Fahim as he attempted a reverse sweep. Aich Mollah, the No. 4, batted patiently for 47 balls to make 13 before he was run out. At this point, Bangladesh were tottering at 56 for 7.Meherob, the No. 8, offered a brief resistance by putting on a 50-run partnership with Ashiqur Zaman (16) to drag Bangladesh’s score into triple digits. But both fell in one over and Hangargekar then finished off the innings with a short ball.India lost Harnoor Singh for a duck, but Angkrish Raghuvanshi (44) and No. 3 Shaik Rasheed (26) consolidated by reining in their shots early on with Mondol and Zaman bowling full to induce them to drive. The longer they batted, the more Bangladesh erred, with boundaries a common fixture in the second half of their 70-run partnership. Raghuvanshi whipped boundaries off his hips, Rasheed played in the ‘V’, and both put away half-trackers offered by the spinners.Their stand effectively quashed whatever little hope Bangladesh had despite both falling in quick succession. Mondol returned to take three more wickets to finish with 4 for 31, but it was too little too late for the defending champions.Dhull, back into the XI after a Covid-enforced break (along with vice-captain Rasheed), remained unbeaten on 26 along with Kaushal Tambe (11*) as they he saw off what could’ve been a tricky final period of play. The match was sealed when Tambe hit a six over long-on.India now face Australia in the second semi-final on February 2. The first semi-final is on February 1 between England and Afghanistan.
