Man Utd could hire "genius" manager who Fergie wanted to sign as a player

da realbet: Speaking after Manchester United’s dismal 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday evening, Erik ten Hag was confident he’d stay in the job. He was pretty confident after the FA Cup win a few months back too.

da wazamba: That’s rather ominous and worrying for fans, don’t you think? Talking to the media, the Dutchman said: “I’m not thinking about being sacked, not at all. We all made the decision to stay together We knew it would take some time. We are on the same page together.”

On the same page they might be, but the playing squad certainly isn’t. It hasn’t been for much of Ten Hag’s tenure truth be told.

The hierarchy at United may have a sounder structure to it now but all is now well on the playing field. Talisman Bruno Fernandes was given the first red card of his career just to sum up their woes.

Now sitting in 12th place, there are few signs that it will get better quickly. So, what’s the plan? Where do the Red Devils go from here? It’s the million-dollar question. Change simply has to be made in the dugout irrespective of the decision made by INEOS over the summer.

Potential Erik ten Hag replacements

Before Ten Hag agreed a new deal with United after the FA Cup success, it was thought that they were looking to onboard Thomas Tuchel.

He was set to leave Bayern Munich and as a result, would be able to be snapped away without any compensation fees. It was the perfect remedy. So they thought anyway.

Tuchel was indeed replaced at Bayern but he is still out of work after allegedly taking no interest in the position at Old Trafford.

Heading back to the German now is unrealistic, but could a certain Zinedine Zidane arrive? The Frenchman seems to get linked every time the managerial position is discussed at United and his name emerged again earlier this month.

Reports from Spain suggested that ‘Ratcliffe dreams of seeing Zidane as the next coach’ with the idea of seeing the iconic Real Madrid hero in the Premier League now ‘gaining strength.’

The former midfielder has been out of work since leaving the Bernabeu behind back in 2021.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Why Zidane is needed at Man Utd

This would be quite the story if the 52-year-old arrived to replace Ten Hag, not just because he’s one of the most successful coaches of the last decade but because, once upon a time, he could have been strutting his stuff in United red.

The great Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him at Old Trafford, famously quoted as once saying: “Give me ten planks of wood and Zidane and I will win the Champions League.”

So, there is a long-standing admiration for the iconic World Cup winner, not just in a playing capacity but now as a coach.

The only negative we can really think of is that he’s been out of the game for the last three years. That said, this is a man who bleeds success.

Zizou won the Serie A twice as a player, he won La Liga once and he also took home a Champions League trophy. For his country, he won the Euros and the 1998 World Cup before he bowed away from the international stage with that infamous head butt.

Since then, he’s become quite the manager, winning three straight Champions Leagues, two La Ligas and two Club World Cups. He commands respect, he has immense aura and he’s a winner, everything Ten Hag sadly doesn’t boast.

As a player, he won just one league championship and to his credit, he did win the Eredivisie three times with Ajax. The Dutchman has even won two cups with United but the chaos that has ensued with him at the helm has made that success a distant memory.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after winning the FA Cup.

So, from a stylistic point of view, what would be different about this team with Zidane in charge? Well, we’ll let the man himself do the talking for a second. “I want my team to play, spread the ball, build from the back and keep possession,” he once said.

Operating with a classic 4-3-3 system that was made so successful by the dominant trio of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, perhaps much wouldn’t change in possession from a formation point of view.

Yet, with regard to structure and organisation, there would surely be huge improvements. After all, he’s already proven he can dig Madrid out of a hole.

During Zidane’s first season in charge, there was a period of time between February 2017 and April 2017 when his men fell behind in seven out of 12 games. They did win six of those matches but it was chaos, the type of thing we’ve seen at United in recent years.

Unlike Ten Hag, he was able to arrest that slump. The year of 2020 showed how. After the lockdown for the Covid pandemic, Madrid won ten in a row, conceding just two goals in the first eight of those matches. Control. It was all about control. Madrid had it. United certainly don’t.

They have conceded eight times in six league matches and last term, shipped 58 goals, leaving oceans of space in the middle of the pitch for opposing teams to capitalise on. That wouldn’t be the case under Zidane.

Previously hailed as a “genius” by pundit Steve McManaman, this would be an appointment that appeases fans. It might not guarantee immediate success but you can bet he’d bring better principles than Ten Hag has.

Daryl Mitchell, Matt Henry fifties keep New Zealand's Test preparation on course

Will Young makes 46 as County Select XI keep plugging away in spirited display

Andrew Miller26-May-2022

Will Young pulls for four on the opening day of New Zealand’s warm-up in Chelmsford•Andrew Miller

New Zealanders 298 for 8 (Henry 65*, Mitchell 58, Young 46, Patterson-White 3-60) vs County Select XIDay by day, innings by innings, and now player by player, New Zealand’s World Champion Test team is slowly beginning to assemble in good time for next week’s series opener against England at Lord’s.You wouldn’t necessarily believe it from their first-day scorecard at Chelmsford, which yielded a litany of half-formed innings as a spirited County Select XI made light of the pre-toss loss of Ollie Robinson to share eight wickets between them, including three in as many evening-session overs for the Nottinghamshire spinner Liam Patterson-White.However, in keeping with the message emanating from the England camp since the arrival of Brendon McCullum as coach, it’s the mindset that matters the most, and with half-centuries for Matt Henry and Daryl Mitchell – one of the squad’s most recent arrivals from IPL duty – and a further 46 from 96 balls from Will Young, a key factor in last year’s series-sealing victory at Edgbaston, there was enough evidence of progress in between the splodges on the scorecard.By the close, the New Zealanders had pushed along to 298 for 8, thanks in no small part to a lively ninth-wicket stand between Cam Fletcher and Henry, whose unbeaten 65 from 67 balls contained ten of the most uncompromising blows of the day.It was hardly riches compared to some of the monstrous totals being racked up at this ground in the Championship this season. However, this green-tinged pitch was a more conventional Chelmsford surface than the ECB-ordered roads of recent vintage, offering good carry for the quicks all day long – perhaps most notably the young left-armer Ben Gibbon, whose nipbacker to send Mitchell on his way for 58 was unquestionably the ball of the day.By the time of his extraction, however, Mitchell had made a sufficient mark. The transition from the white-ball tamasha of the IPL to the dozy ebb and flow of the CloudFM County Ground is one of the more curious tempo-changes that the game has to offer – and it’s a comedown that Kane Williamson too can expect to experience later in the game after his overnight arrival in the country, albeit from a paternity stopover in New Zealand.Mitchell, however, has had less of an abrupt shift than some of his team-mates – notably Devon Conway, who thumped a matchwinning 87 from 49 balls for Chennai Super Kings earlier this month, and was still in action only this past weekend. Here his solitary scoring shot was a pleasing cut through point as he fell for 4 from 14 balls to the energetic Lancashire seamer Jack Blatherwick.Ben Gibbon impressed with his left-arm seam on the first day at Chelmsford•Andrew Miller

Mitchell, by contrast, has been warming the bench for Rajasthan Royals for the past month, ever since two underwhelming mid-tournament outings which yielded a total of 33 runs from 44 balls, and left him surplus to Rajasthan’s squad permutations as they prepare for Friday’s Qualifier against RCB.He stood firm in a lively opening gambit. Gibbon’s tight line to the left-handed Tom Latham induced a spliced edge to Ryan Patel at second slip before Blatherwick’s breakthrough left New Zealand tottering at 24 for 2. But Young, who survived a tough chance to the diving Patel at midwicket on 6, grew into his own knock as he and Mitchell added 67 for the third wicket. The pick of Young’s six fours was a powerful launch through long-on as Jamie Porter dropped short, and having carried his solid county form for Northamptonshire into his two unbeaten innings against Sussex earlier in the week, another half-century seemed on the cards until Blatherwick found some nip on off stump and a thin edge off a squared-up blade.Robinson’s morning withdrawal led to a late SOS to Middlesex’s Ethan Bamber, who arrived during the lunch interval and was thrust into action as a rolling substitute in the afternoon, bowling nine lively overs but encountering Mitchell in a mood to free his arms, as he leaned into an elegant launch over long-on for the only six of his innings. It briefly seemed that Gibbon might also fall victim to New Zealand’s hard-hitting middle-order, as Colin de Grandhomme clicked his own innings into gear with three fours in a row – each of them dismissed through the leg side as the youngster strayed repeatedly onto his legs. But Gibbon, who turns 22 in a fortnight’s time, has already endured worse indignities in his short career. The first of his two first-class appearances to date also happened to be the occasion of Ben Stokes’ rampage through New Road three weeks ago, and he had been on the receiving end of two of Stokes’ record-breaking 17 sixes that day.One over later, and with Mitchell back in his sights, Gibbon changed his angle to round the wicket, and produced a peach of a bail-trimmer, nipping at pace from a good length outside off, and bursting through a loose drive to flick the top of off stump.By that stage Tom Blundell had already fallen for 8, caught at slip by Patel as he pushed with hard hands at a tight-lined lifter from Lyndon James. And though de Grandhomme and Michael Bracewell seemed in the mood to re-inflate the innings from a wobbly 154 for 5, the introduction of Patterson-White’s unassuming but quietly effective left-arm spin caused a further flurry of breakthroughs.Bracewell gave Patterson-White the charge, only for the ball to turn inexorably through the gate to bowl him for 21, whereupon de Grandhomme planted him into the long-off stands before chopping the next ball through backward point for four. Patterson-White held his nerve, though, and his line, immediately skidding a flatter delivery into the pads to extract a leg-stump lbw decision for 39.Kyle Jamieson then leaned back on an attempted cut to hole out to Nick Gubbins at short cover, but as the floodlights kicked in, so did Henry with a buccaneering final flurry to a satisfactory day’s play all round.

Darren Gough 'surprised' by criticism Joe Root faced towards end of captaincy

Yorkshire’s director of cricket “can’t wait” to have Root available for his county in coming weeks

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Apr-2022Darren Gough was “surprised” by the level of criticism Joe Root faced in his final months as England’s Test captain and “can’t wait” to have him available to play for Yorkshire in the coming weeks.Gough, who became Yorkshire’s director of cricket in December after Martyn Moxon was sacked, was speaking during the club’s first County Championship fixture this season against Gloucestershire in Bristol. He expects Root to play “two or three” games before England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand and said he had kept in touch with him throughout the winter.”Realistically, with a bit of luck, I’d like to think we’d get him for two or three games before the Test series starts,” Gough said. “Whatever we get Joe Root for is a bonus. He loves playing for Yorkshire.”He’s been on messages and wished everybody luck before this game. That’s the sort of character he is. To get a player of his experience and brilliance – I can’t wait to have him back.Related

Where next for England now that Joe Root has resigned the Test captaincy?

Joe Root's resignation compounds power vacuum at ECB

“I’m sure he just wants to get back playing now that he’s got this [his resignation] out of the way. It might have been on his mind for the last month or so since he came back.”Gough said that while Root had “probably done the right thing” in stepping down, he was surprised to see the news break on Friday morning and insisted that he had done “a good job” throughout his five years in the role.”He’s come home, thought about the pluses and negatives and thought, ‘yep, it’s time to go now’. He’s probably thought that now’s the right time to step away, but I was surprised when I was over breakfast this morning and it popped up on the screen.”The problem is that one win in 17 is the one that goes against him, 27 Test victories, though. When you think about it, would you say he’s always had the best players available to him in that last 17 Test matches? I would say not.”I think Joe – and I’ve been in that dressing room environment in New Zealand – is hugely respected by every single player and coaching staff. And he was the perfect man for the job.”Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s interim managing director of cricket, watches players warm up in Bristol•Getty Images

Gough added that Root had fallen victim to English cricket’s blame game, and that he had been “a strong personality” and “a strong leader” who had been hampered by the absence of key players.”He’s had a lot of criticism,” Gough said. “I think what probably hurt him [is that] it’s come from a lot of guys who played the game and captained England as well – some of his closest mates.”I was surprised by the criticism; I think you have to look deeper than that. With everything that has been going on in English cricket, I don’t think you can blame the captain. Unfortunately, we’re always looking for someone to blame.”When you look back in the history of captains, what do we always say? ‘Well, he was a good captain because he won the Ashes or he wasn’t because he didn’t win the Ashes’. But the greatest captain I ever played under was Nasser Hussain, and he didn’t win the Ashes. You have to have the players, and you’re only as good as your players.”Asked if there was a better candidate available than Root, Gough said: “Not at the minute, I don’t think so. Obviously Ben Stokes is a terrific personality, and I would say he’s one of those natural leaders on the field. But unfortunately, he’s had this time out of the game, he’s got these injuries and his workload’s already through the roof. It’s a big decision if he takes it.”And some of the better candidates are not in the England team at this moment in time. They got dropped after the winter. It will be a very difficult choice with who they go for. The natural choice is Stokes – you go with the best player, don’t you? He’s the only one who is secure of a place, so there’s nowhere else to go.”

Farke must soon axe Leeds dud who earns more than Ramazani & Piroe

da cassino online: Leeds United confidently put Cardiff City to the sword 2-0 last time out in the Welsh capital, with now ex-Bluebirds boss Erol Bulut relieved of his duties in the aftermath of Daniel Farke’s Whites picking up a straightforward three points.

da realbet: The away side needed to get back to winning ways after a flat 1-0 loss to Burnley the match before, with the hosts brushed to one side eventually, to allow Leeds to pick up their third win of the early Championship season so far.

Farke would have been pleased with his side’s performance on the road, as Leeds new boy Largie Ramazani opened his account for his new club to get the Whites up and running away from home, before reliable impact substitute Joel Piroe delivered the goods again to make sure of the win.

Ramazani & Piroe's performances vs Cardiff

The 2-0 victory wouldn’t have been possible without the exploits of this attacking duo, with the ex-Almeria man standing out for the majority of the contest down the right channel, before Piroe was drafted in late on to make sure of the three points.

Despite scoring the decisive opener in the first half, the former Manchester United youth product could have even more to shout about from a goalscoring perspective on his first start for his new employers, with one big chance missed on top of a fierce effort thankfully beating Jan Alnwick.

As the game wore on, Farke decided that a change in personnel in the attacking positions was needed, with Piroe known to be a dependable option to throw into games when opposition legs are tiring.

The former Swansea City man only needed 16 minutes of action against Hull City to score at the back-end of August, with only 14 minutes needed in Wales for the Dutchman to leave his impact on yet another Championship tie.

Leeds duo Ethan Ampadu and Joel Piroe.

Amazingly, the instinctive 25-year-old would only need to amass four touches of the ball to find the back of the net, with his crucial strike against the Bluebirds taking his Leeds total goal tally to 16 strikes from 56 games.

Both players moving forward will undoubtedly help their side when contests become even more nervy and tense as the season drags on, but both Leeds assets find that their pay packets are lesser when weighed up next to Sam Byram’s – according to Capology – despite the fact the ageing full-back’s own importance has definitely begun to wane in Farke’s camp.

Byram's wage in 2024

As per Capology, Byram currently finds himself earning a healthy £20k-per-week at the West Yorkshire club, despite only averaging ten minutes of action this season when thrown into action four times in the league. His only start came in the EFL Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.

The 31-year-old could still be seen as a useful utility figure to have around, considering the fact that the ex-West Ham United man can play at both left-back and right-back if needed, but his wage still feels extortionate next to other more key first-team presences.

Looking at the table above, away from the aforementioned Ramazani and Piroe both earning a lesser £17.5k-per-week and £15k-per-week respectively, both Ilia Gruev and Mateo Joseph – who have been largely everpresent this season under Farke in the league – also both earn £5k-per-week less than the reserve defender.

With Isaac Schmidt now at the German’s disposal in defence too, who can also play in either full-back spot, Byram gaining consistent minutes for his employers on a week in week-out basis looks like it’ll be harder to come by.

Farke will have to have some conversations with the 31-year-old down the line about his immediate Whites future, with his contract up next summer, whilst Ramazani, Piroe and the other named faces aim to play a major part in Leeds finally winning promotion back up to the Premier League.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy's maiden Test hundred extends Bangladesh's fight

Bad light and rain brought an early close to day three with SA 75 ahead with all ten second-innings wickets in hand

Stumps South Africa 367 and 6 for 0 lead Bangladesh 298 (Mahmudul 137, Litton 41, Harmer 4-103, Williams 3-54) by 75 runsMahmudul Hasan Joy became the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test hundred against South Africa, registering his maiden century in just his third Test, as the visitors extended their fight against a weakened home attack. Mahmudul had good support from the lower middle order and shared in a 33-run stand with Yasir Ali and a 51-run stand with Mehidy Hasan Miraz after putting on 82 for the fifth wicket with Litton Das, Bangladesh’s best partnership of the innings. He was eventually the last man out for 137, as Bangladesh limited South Africa’s first-innings lead to 69.Bangladesh were bowled out inside the first hour of the evening session, leaving South Africa a potentially tricky period to bat out, but fading light and rain brought the day to a premature close just four overs into their second innings. Their openers survived it unscathed, even as Bangladesh burned a review when they felt Dean Elgar had edged an attempted drive off Najmul Hossain Shanto’s offspin. It turned out in the end that he had missed the ball but his bat had hit the ground. On a pitch that remained good for batting, albeit slow, South Africa’s attack lacked bite in the absence of an out-and-out strike bowler. While Lizaad Williams bowled at a good pace – a shade under 140kph – Duanne Olivier remained innocuous, and Wiaan Mulder was not called on until the third session, after 107 overs of the Bangladesh innings. Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj did the bulk of the bowling and sent down 77 overs between them but Maharaj went wicketless and Harmer was unable to add to his four from the second day.Williams was the only bowler to enjoy success in the first two sessions of the day, removing nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed in the third over of the day and Litton two balls after lunch. Litton was well-set at the time, after surviving two chances in the morning session which could have seen him dismissed on 16 – when Williams found his outside edge, but Dean Elgar put down a regulation catch at first slip – or 29. He was given out caught behind off Harmer and reviewed immediately. Ultra Edge showed a flat line.Lizaad Williams picked up three wickets in his first Test innings•AFP/Getty Images

Despite those chances, Litton was attacking against the Olivier short ball and showed good intent against the spinners, who may have been guilty of trying too hard. Harmer, in search of a five-for on Test comeback, bowled quicker and fuller than he had on the second day and Maharaj was unlucky despite being economical.Harmer was denied a second time when Mahmudul, on 64, was dropped at short leg by Sarel Erwee and a third when Litton appeared to inside-edge him to short-leg on the stroke of lunch and South Africa reviewed unsuccessfully. All told, they missed four opportunities in the morning session.Their fielding was sharper as the day went on and did not let the easiest chance go begging when Yasir was late to respond to a call. Mahmudul was on 90 when he clipped Olivier through midwicket and ran one before rejecting a second run, but Yasir did not hear him in time. He ended up almost at the non-striker’s end when Ryan Rickleton’s throw reached Kyle Verreynne, who ran him out.Mehidy partnered Mahmudul to his milestone, which came with a two off Maharaj, and celebrated with an air punch and a leap as the Bangladesh change room rose to their feet in celebration.Mulder was given the ball after tea and took less than three overs to make an impact. He had Mehidy caught at slip to leave Mahmudul with the tail. He changed gears almost immediately and after scoring 110 off 309 balls added his next 27 runs in 17 balls including a slog-sweep off Harmer which went for six and four boundaries off Mulder’s fourth over. Williams removed him when he backed away to cut and edged to Harmer at slip.

Uh oh: Burnley have suffered "big injury" to "electric" 27 y/o before Leeds

da brdice: Burnley have suffered a "big injury" to a first-team player ahead of their Championship clash with Leeds United, manager Scott Parker has confirmed.

Burnley face huge Leeds clash

da brwin: The Clarets return to league action with a high-profile meeting with Leeds on Saturday lunchtime, in what promises to be a testing game off the back of the international break.

Burnley were among the leading candidates to secure promotion to the Premier League at the start of the season, and the early signs suggest that they may well be right in the mix. Parker's side are sixth in the table after four matches, and while points have been dropped twice, it would be a surprise if they weren't at least in and around the playoff positions throughout the campaign.

As for Leeds, they are one point and two places ahead of the Clarets in fourth, even though Daniel Farke has found himself under pressure at times. Saturday's clash at Elland Road may tell us a lot more about both teams, with an away win at a daunting ground acting as a real signal of intent by Burnley.

Parker has been handed an injury blow in the lead-up to the weekend action, however, with one important player set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Parker confirms "big injury" to Burnley ace

Speaking ahead of the Leeds game, with quotes provided by The Burnley Express, Parker confirmed that Manuel Benson won't be available after picking up a "big injury", with "months" on the sidelines looking possible:

"Benny has got a bit of a big injury, so he won’t be around for a number of weeks, maybe months. That’s the big disappointment from the [Blackburn] game regarding Benny in that sense, having come on, but hopefully he can recover as quickly as possible but we won’t be seeing him for a little while. It’s his calf/his achilles. We’ve obviously scanned him and there’s obviously a problem there. He’s going to need time now to recover and get it right to re-boot him up and get him ready for when he’s fit."

Manuel Benson

Benson may not be one of the first names on Parker's team sheet, being limited to 10 minutes of Championship action so far this season, but losing him for such an extended period of time is far from ideal.

Squad depth is so vital in the Championship, given the relentless nature of the fixture schedule, so suddenly not having the 27-year-old to call upon for much of the remainder of the year isn't ideal.

Benson has done well in a Burnley shirt since arriving from Royal Antwerp in 2022, scoring 13 goals in 47 appearances, while Sam Parkin has hailed him as "electric" in the past, highlighting what a big miss he is going to be.

Hopefully, the Clarets will cope without him, still sitting pretty near the top of the Championship table upon his return, before he has a big impact later in the season.
