Tottenham keen on signing marquee defender after Radu Dragusin deal

Tottenham are believed to be targeting a marquee defender despite already signing Radu Dragusin this month, with Spurs eager to add more signings in that area.

Spurs back Postecoglou with early January moves

Signing Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig and Dragusin in a £25 million deal from Genoa, with both arriving early in the window, represents the club's serious faith in manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham could attempt last-gasp January bid for star after Antonio Nusa

Chairman Daniel Levy could personally decide to swoop.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 23, 2024

The Australian publicly urged Spurs to do their business in quick fashion, so that incomings have time to grow accustomed to life in north London and are able to assist the club immediately in their chase for Champions League qualification.

"If you can bring them in early, even if they don't play you can bed them into training and our style of football because it's not like we're going to sign somebody and they'll hit the ground running," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's ideal January.

"Whereas if you leave it towards the end of January, it's potentially not until mid to end of February when they get up to speed, depending where they're coming from, the league they're coming from. So there's a whole lot of moving parts. So yes, I'd love to do something early in the window but even me saying that puts a challenge on us – because other clubs know we want to do something early."

They may not be done there either, as reports suggest Spurs remain locked in talks to sign Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa and could make a late move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The signing of Dragusin in particular, though, comes as a vital coup for Postecoglou's side given their serious lack of depth at centre-back for much of the campaign.

Full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies were often forced to partner each other at the heart of Tottenham's defence when both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were unavailable, but Dragusin's arrival will help to ensure they are not put in a similar position again.

Following on from the Romanian's capture, it has also been reported that Spurs could still sign another defender this year. Napoli's Leo Ostigard and Bologna centre-back Riccardo Calafiori have both been linked recently, and it is believed they remain firm admirers of Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.

Tottenham targeting Branthwaite after Dragusin

According to a report by The Mail and journalist Simon Jones, Tottenham are targeting Branthwaite with the view of making a potential move later this year.

Spurs are keen on the 21-year-old amid his exceptional campaign at Goodison Park, and it is believed the club want to further reinforce Postecoglou's backline despite already signing Dragusin this month.

jake-o'brien-jarrad-branthwaite-everton-opinion

The marquee defender has a rumoured price tag of around £75 million, so they'll have to really invest or work hard to whittle down Everton's valuation.

In any case, the sky is the limit for Branthwaite following a really promising 2023/2024, with former Man United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy calling him a "complete" defender already.

Prithvi Shaw, Bhuvneshwar Kumar back in action in contrasting styles

Karnataka, Baroda, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Haryana have qualified for the Super League; four more teams will join them

Saurabh Somani17-Nov-2019The closing stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s league phase have been enlivened by a tight race for the Super League and two prominent names making a comeback, Prithvi Shaw and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Sunday was to be the last day of the league stage for all five groups, but reschedules have meant there will be seven matches from Groups C, D and E played on Monday. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super League, to be followed by semi-finals and the final.Shaw smacks half-century on comeback
Having served out his eight-month ban for consuming a banned substance, Shaw returned to action for Mumbai in the familiar environs of the Wankhede Stadium with 63 off 39 balls at the top of the order in a Group D match.Assam had to bear the brunt of a Mumbai side smarting from a shock defeat against Meghalaya in their last match. Mumbai piled up 206 for 5 after being asked to bat, while Assam could muster only 123 for 8.But while Aditya Tare, Shaw’s opening partner, was the game’s top-scorer, smashing 82 off 48, Shaw was the cynosure. It was his first knock at a representative level since the IPL Qualifier for Delhi Capitals against Chennai Super Kings on May 10.He came through the test well, though Assam’s bowling didn’t pose the greatest challenge, hitting six fours and three sixes in his knock. Shaw will now need to build on a successful start to his comeback to challenge for a spot in the Indian team again. In his absence, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal have established themselves as unquestionably the first-choice openers in the Test team.Bhuvneshwar Kumar in his delivery follow-through•AFPBhuvneshwar makes a solid comeback
Injuries, and team dynamics, have meant Bhuvneshwar has slipped from being a three-format India player to one who is looked at primarily for limited-overs cricket. Even with the white ball, Deepak Chahar’s emergence as a swing bowler of considerable skill has meant Bhuvneshwar’s absence hasn’t quite been an unfillable void. Before the T20I series against Bangladesh, chief selector MSK Prasad had said, “Bhuvneshwar Kumar might come in the next series.”Bhuvneshwar took some strides towards an international comeback, making a steady if understated return to competitive cricket. He played his second match in three days for Uttar Pradesh, in Group B. His comeback game was against Manipur on November 15 in Thumba, where he took none for 13 in three overs. Against Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, he bowled his full quota of four overs and took 1 for 23.Kerala made 119 for 8 in 20 overs, before Uttar Pradesh, set a revised target of 44 in seven overs, ended on 42 for 4, losing by one run. That result had significant ramifications for who ended up qualifying.Karnataka, Baroda, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Haryana qualify
Karnataka, Baroda, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan have already qualified for the Super League, with Groups A and B having completed all their matches. Some matches remain in Group D, but Mumbai and Haryana have qualified from that group. Mumbai are on an impregnable 24 points. Haryana have 20, with a match against Meghalaya left. Even if they lose, there is no other team on 20 points. Puducherry are on 16 and can equal Haryana on points if they beat Madhya Pradesh, but Haryana had won their head-to-head match against Puducherry. Both Karnataka and Baroda finished on 20 points in Group A, having five wins and one defeat each, and sailed through comfortably. The going was tighter in Group B. Tamil Nadu were the group leaders with 20 points, but Rajasthan, Vidarbha and Kerala all finished on 16 points each. They had all beaten each other once, which meant Rajasthan, with a net run-rate of 1.938, qualified ahead of Vidarbha (0.566) and Kerala (0.503).Two rain-affected matches that were decided by a margin of just one run played a part in deciding the Group B table. Vidarbha had beaten Rajasthan by a single run on November 12 despite Chahar’s heroics, and, on Sunday, Kerala beat Uttar Pradesh by the same margin. If Kerala hadn’t won, there wouldn’t have been a three-way tie and in that case, Vidarbha would have gone through by virtue of having won their head-to-head game against Rajasthan.Meanwhile, Rajasthan did all they could to qualify, destroying Tripura in a nine-wicket win. They first restricted Tripura to just 69 for 7 in 16 overs, and then smashed their way to 74 for 1 in five overs, ensuring their net run-rate would be high enough to take them through in case of a three-way tie – which is exactly what happened.Group C currently has out of eight teams on 16 points each, making the race very right. Two Group C games are still remaining. The winner of Maharashtra v Punjab will straightaway qualify, since they are two of the teams on 16 points. Railways, also on 16, will join in if they can beat Himachal Pradesh in the other game. Himachal have only eight points, though, so if they win, it could leave five teams on 16. Punjab have a net run-rate superior to all others, so if they lose to Maharashtra, they’ll still be in position to qualify – should Railways lose. The team with the second-highest net run-rate right now is an unlikely one: Chandigarh. It will be quite a story if they qualify.Jharkhand are on top of Group E, but both Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir are close behind, and the latter two have matches in hand. The next two teams are Gujarat and Odisha, who will also be in action on the final day, which makes Group E’s scenario uncertain till the end.

Levy now targeting 20 y/o midfielder for Spurs after scintillating season

Tottenham recruitment chiefs and chairman Daniel Levy are now said to have their eyes on a "scintillating" new target as the club's transfer plans take further shape.

Spurs aiming to sign midfielder after Dragusin and Werner

According to widespread reports since Spurs completed deals to sign Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, the Lilywhites are also now looking to sign a midfield number eight.

Club willing to sell as Spurs in regular talks for signing after Dragusin

They’re actively pursuing another new addition.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 13, 2024

Both Werner and Dragusin made their debuts in Tottenham's 2-2 draw away to Man United on Sunday, with the visitors coming back from behind twice to take a point away from Old Trafford.

Manager Ange Postecoglou will be thrilled by his side's early moves in the January transfer market, especially to shore up key positions and provide him with a much-needed alternative centre-back option.

However, it is believed Postecoglou is keen on a new midfield running man who can alternate with playmaker James Maddison. Much could depend on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future at the club in that regard, as Spurs will need to free up squad space and bring in funds to make that potential transfer happen.

That being said, Tottenham are apparently pressing for a third January signing in the form of a new midfield engine, with links still surrounding Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

Reliable football.london journalist Alasdair Gold backs the 'Hojbjerg out, new midfielder in' hypothesis in a report this week, but the Spurs correspondent also suggests that isn't their only transfer plan.

Tottenham eyeing Jonathan Rowe move

Indeed, according to Gold, the north Londoners will explore deals for young stars on the rise.

One of them is Norwich City sensation Jonathan Rowe, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign for the Canaries with 11 goals and two assists in the Championship so far.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

It is believed this has grabbed attention from Levy, technical director Johan Lange and co, with Tottenham now interested in signing Rowe from Norwich. There has been no official move made just yet, but the 20-year-old attacking midfielder is a new name on their radar.

Rowe has been "making a lot of noise" amid his "scintillating" season in England's second tier, as said by former Three Lions international and pundit Cole Palmer.

"One player making a lot of noise is Jonathan Rowe, Norwich's 20-year-old winger has scored five goals in nine appearances and was named EFL Young Player of the Month in August," said Carlton Palmer to Football League World in October.

"His scintillating form has seen him earn a call-up to England's under-20 squad. If he can keep producing performances like he's doing then he's going to become a very hot commodity."

Rowe would also do wonders to fill Spurs' homegrown quota, though it is unclear just how much Norwich would demand for their starlet.

Third time lucky for Newcastle? Magpies set to launch another bid for Wolves star Jorgen Strand Larsen after seeing £55m offer knocked back

Earlier this week, Newcastle United's search for a new striker hit another obstacle after their transfer bid worth £50 million ($67.6m) for Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen was rejected. Wolves have maintained throughout the summer that Larsen won't be allowed to leave in this transfer window, irrespective of the offer as the player is an important part of their squad.

According to , Newcastle remain keen on signing Larsen this summer, as they look for a replacement for wantaway forward Alexander Isak, who has made up his mind to join Premier League champions LIverpool. Accordingly, the Magpies have increased their bid value by £5m and remain hopeful that they will be able to sign the striker forward before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle have been in the transfer market in search of a new forward since Callum Wilson's departure from the club this summer. Isak's future also remains uncertain after the Swedish star's public outburst against the Magpies.

It has been a tough transfer window for Newcastle, who have missed out on multiple strikers despite showing strong interest. Negotiations with Brentford over the transfer of Yoane Wissa have been complicated all through the summer, while they missed out on signing Benjamin Sesko, who opted to move to Old Trafford.

Kobbie Mainoo wants Napoli move – but Man Utd block exit due to success of Scott McTominay

Kobbie Mainoo reportedly wants a transfer to Napoli, but Manchester United are blocking an exit due to the success of Scott McTominay. A £50 million ($67m) deal is being discussed and the Italian champions are ready to offer a four-year deal for the youngster.

According to Mainoo has informed United chiefs that his wish is to leave permanently, turning down the idea of a short-term loan move. His determination comes despite United insisting they will not sanction an exit, a stance influenced by the spectacular turnaround of another former academy product, McTominay, who has thrived since moving to Naples last year.

Napoli boss Antonio Conte is convinced Mainoo can follow McTominay’s path to glory in Italy. He has personally endorsed the deal, believing the youngster’s quick feet, passing vision, and ability to thrive under pressure in tight spaces make him a perfect fit for Napoli’s system.

Despite being regarded as one of United’s most promising prospects, Mainoo has struggled for consistent minutes under Ruben Amorim. The England international’s current contract runs until 2027, but talks over an extension have stalled, reflecting uncertainty over his role in the squad. This season, he was overlooked for United’s opening two league games, sitting on the bench as Amorim opted for captain Bruno Fernandes to control the strings in midfield. His only significant outing came in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, where he played the full 90 minutes in a shock penalty shootout loss. With opportunities limited and his development stalling, Mainoo is pushing harder than ever to seal his move abroad.

DID YOU KNOW?

United bosses are still reeling from the decision to sell McTominay for just £25m ($34m) to Napoli last summer. Branded surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, the midfielder reinvented himself under Conte, becoming the heartbeat of a side that lifted the Scudetto. In his debut Serie A season, McTominay netted 12 goals in 34 appearances, played a pivotal role in Napoli’s title charge, and scored the decisive goal on the final day to secure the crown. His sensational transformation has even led to a Ballon d’Or nomination, the first for a Scottish player since Ally McCoist back in 1987. To cap it off, he scooped Serie A’s MVP award, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most improved players.

Newcastle team news vs Arsenal

Liam Kennedy has dropped a ‘big summer’ Newcastle United claim on Elliot Anderson after news of his ineligibility was confirmed.

The Lowdown: Not eligible

As per Newcastle World, Anderson is not eligible to play against Arsenal and Burnley in their remaining two Premier League fixtures.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has returned to St. James’ Park after his loan spell at Bristol Rovers, but guidance from the top flight has stated that while he is now able to train with the first team, he will not be allowed to feature for them, as only in ‘exceptional circumstances’ – like the early recall of a goalkeeper – should a player be able to return to first-team football outside of a transfer window.

The Latest: Kennedy reacts

Taking to Twitter, Newcastle World journalist Kennedy has given his reaction to the revelation, claiming that while it is a ‘shame’, there could still be a ‘big’ summer ahead for Anderson:

“It’s a shame, but not even sure Eddie Howe would use him, especially when you look back at his selection policy against Cambridge in the FA Cup earlier this season. Could be a big summer for the lad.”

The Verdict: Shame indeed

Indeed, it is a shame that the Toon Army will not be able to see Anderson play for them in their remaining two games.

The 19-year-old scored eight goals and made a further five assists in 21 matches in total in League Two, including three goal contributions on the final day which helped the Gas remarkably win promotion (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, with the North East club now comfortable in the table, it would have been a good time to see what Anderson can do as Eddie Howe ponders keeping him in his squad for the next campaign.

'We need to find a third seamer who can bat' – Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo

Bangladesh’s coach says the Test team needs structural changes, for which he is prepared to pick ‘new faces and struggle for a period of time’

Mohammad Isam in Indore15-Nov-2019Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo has called for structural changes in the Test side for overall improvement. He pointed towards the need for a seam-bowling allrounder who would bat at No 7 or 8, to provide the balance that the current side lacks.Bangladesh are playing seven batsmen, including wicketkeeper Liton Das, and four bowlers in the first Test against India. Mehidy Hasan Miraz hasn’t lived up to the promise that he could develop into an allrounder, which has left Bangladesh with a long tail. The squad outside the playing XI consists of three specialist bowlers and an opening batsman, so Domingo will have to wait for that elusive allrounder to emerge.”There’s no doubt that the structure of the team needs change, otherwise the results are going to be the same,” Domingo said. “I need to sit with the selectors to plan the way forward. I need to identify the players that can take the team forward. If it means that we need to go with some new faces and struggle for a period of time, I don’t think it is any different to what is happening at the moment.”There’s some fantastic players in our side that needs to be respected. We need to value their performances for Bangladesh, but we also need to take decision in the best interest of the team.”The missing link here is, of course, Shakib Al Hasan, who gave the team the flexibility to play five bowlers. The team management, however, has often been reluctant to play that fifth bowler, and have often played an eighth batsman even when Shakib has been in the side.Domingo said Bangladesh will need to find a seaming allrounder like Mohammad Saifuddin, who has done a decent job in the ODI and T20I sides, but often struggles with injury.”It is very hard to play with two seamers,” Domingo said. “We definitely need to find a third seamer who can bat. There’s Saifuddin, but he is struggling with injuries. But the structure of the team needs attention.”I think a lot of teams that play against Bangladesh will prepare good wickets, which won’t spin much. We need to find a seamer who can do a No 7 or 8 job for us with the bat.”Russell Domingo keeps an eye on a Bangladesh training session•BCBDomingo said Bangladesh tend to pick the extra batsman because not many of the top seven have good Test averages, and this forces the team to sacrifice a bowler. “I think it is easy to say when you have six batters who are all averaging 45 or 50. You look at the numbers of the Indian batters, but unfortunately we don’t have those numbers in our batting line-up.”We are playing that extra batter to make up for that. It is a catch-22 situation. If you don’t pick up wickets, people say why you didn’t take the extra bowler. Hindsight is a great sight.”What Domingo is also worried about is the level of interest his players show in Test cricket as opposed to T20 cricket.”It is a challenge which I need to come to terms to, as a coach.” Domingo said. “It is obviously a tough one, being my second Test match and seeing how guys approach Tests, how they train leading into Test cricket. It is hard for me to say whether guys prefer [Test cricket or the shorter formats], that you need to ask them.”There are definitely players who are more suited to T20s, and some more suited to Tests. Some players are hungry when they play T20, some are hungry when they Tests.”I think trying to siphon out the T20 into one side and Test-match guys into one side is something that I am grappling with. After this last T20 series and the first days of the Test, I am starting to get an understanding.”

Mumbai knocked out, Chhattisgarh progress after washout

Chhattisgarh had one more win than Mumbai in the league stage, which ensured their progress

Saurabh Somani in Alur21-Oct-2019No result

The inequities of a rain-affected knockout match were brought to the fore as Chhattisgarh’s quarter-final against Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 was washed out on Monday.Chhattisgarh had finished the league stage with five wins to Mumbai’s four, and with number of wins in the league stage being the first deciding criterion in the event of a washout, they found themselves in a first-ever semi-final. Their defeat of Mumbai in the league stage, when they chased down 318, proved to be pivotal.Excellent bowling by Mumbai, who ensured captain Shreyas Iyer’s decision to bowl first was vindicated, meant Chhattisgarh had plodded to 190 for 6 with just 4.2 overs remaining. A sharp downpour meant lunch was taken early and Mumbai’s innings was shortened to 40 overs, with the target set at 192 via the VJD method.Teenage wunderkind Yashasvi Jaiswal then showed how good the surface at the Alur II stadium was – coupled with how outrageously gifted he himself is – as Mumbai clattered 95 without loss in 11.3 overs before the skies opened up once again. Unlike the previous downpour, this one was of much greater intensity, and though it lasted barely over half hour, the ground was soggy, wet and in no condition to complete the 8.3 overs that remained to count as a result. The first stoppage in play had lasted 88 minutes, but hadn’t affected the game’s direction. When Mumbai came out to bat, they were expected to do so on a pitch made a bit spicy by moisture – the umpires waited a good ten minutes before calling for the covers even as a drizzle intensified during Chhattisgarh’s innings – but someone forgot to tell Jaiswal that. The 17-year-old who came into this game having hit three centuries in his last four innings, with his most recent knock being a monumental 203, looked on course to make yet another three-figure score. He showed respect for neither age, nor bowler, carting Chhattisgarh’s bowlers for five fours and as many sixes. Three of those sixes resulted in stoppages of play because the ball had gone over the boundary of the stadium. Ironically, Jaiswal’s big-hitting actually meant a few valuable minutes lost while new balls were sought, though of course it was not a serious enough delay to make Mumbai wonder if their opener should have just held back a wee bit and sent the ball merely over the rope.Jaiswals’s opening partner Aditya Tare was progressing niftily at a run-a-ball, but his 31* looked positively snail-like against Jaiswal’s 38-ball 60.Defending champions Mumbai looked primed to saunter into the semi-finals and set up a rematch with Karnataka, but it was not to be.Earlier, Dhawal Kulkarni had led the way with the ball, returning a first spell of 6-4-3-1, with Shardul Thakur not too far behind with his 6-2-13-1. Chhattisgarh’s early loss of wickets and nip off the deck meant they went into extreme caution mode, and the scoreboard read 16 for 2 in 12 overs. That run-rate of 1.33 was still an improvement from being 10 for 2 in 11 overs.Captain Harpreet Singh was still there though, and he showed the value of biding time on the surface. He found a good ally in Amandeep Khare, as the duo added 135 runs in 143 balls for the fourth wicket, lifting Chhattisgarh from a sorry 40 for 3 in the 19th over.Harpreet had been on 9 off 46 balls at one stage, but accelerated gradually, before exploding in the 39th over, bowled by left-arm spinner Shams Mulani. The second, fourth and sixth balls all disappeared over the ropes, in the arc between long-on and deep midwicket, as he moved from 57 to 75 in five balls.Just when Chhattisgarh seemed to have found their finishing gear though, he fell for 83 off 108 balls. Another mini-collapse followed, as Chhattisgarh went from 175 for 3 to 181 for 6, even as Khare held fort on a patient half-century. Taking that clutch of wickets just before rain meant Mumbai had to chase relatively fewer than they could have otherwise, though 192 in 40 overs still felt generous to Chhattisgarh. Eventually, the rain gods proved most generous.

Tottenham Hotspur: Italian source shares big McKennie update

According to Italian sources, a major Tottenham Hotspur transfer update has come to light involving Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The Lowdown: Spurs long-linked…

The Lilywhites have long been interested in the former Schlake star, according to reports, and you can trace links all the way back to 2020.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

McKennie, during his time in the Bundesliga, was allegedly turning Tottenham’s head before he opted to join Serie A powerhouses Juve instead.

Commenting at the time, former Spurs striker Darren Bent called the USA international a would-be ‘very Spursy signing’, and it appears the Premier League side’s interest hasn’t waned.

The Latest: Tottenham ready offer…

According to TuttoJuve, Spurs, and by extension their transfer chief Fabio Paratici are ‘ready to offer’ around €30 million (£26m) for his services this summer.

They also say the north Londoners are rethinking signing McKennie who is an ‘old passion’ for manager Antonio Conte.

The Verdict: Make it happen?

Conte apparently wants to sign two new midfielders this summer amid a plethora of other transfer demands and Juve’s ace may well be an astute option, even despite Bent’s Spursy comment.

While he is hardly an untouchable under Massimiliano Allegri, MLS correspondent and USA national team critic Chris Smith of 90min has drawn attention to his brilliant performances at international level.

The reporter has lavished praise on McKennie, branding the starlet a ‘pressing machine’ and ‘supremely underrated’ attacking threat for his country.

His young age indicates he may only get better, and for just £26m, the price tag would be a fairly reasonable one if Juventus agree to it.

In other news: Tottenham expected to move for ‘phenomenal’ £101m star after Conte request, find out more here.
